    I have a 72 Johnson 65HP that has a beat up gearcase. I bought a new one a while back, but I was waiting until I needed to replace the seals to do the swap. I drained the oil a few days ago during my winter-prep maintenance and it was a bit milky. I have it mostly apart at this point but I was looking at the two slide hammer deal in the manual to remove the oil pump and my reaction was the same as yours. I'll go get some 1/4-20 threaded rod and make a puller like you used.
    I bought a pair of 12 inch ICON internal snap ring pliers at the ol' Harbor Fright. I had to grind on the casting of the pliers to remove some material so they would fit. (Don't grind on the 1/8th inch tips!) No special tool required. I like yours better, but I may never use these again after this rebuild - so cheaper is better.
    Thanks for the videos, I find them very informative!

    Great series. Giving links to tools you use has been a life saver. Thanks for doing so. Just picked up a 1970 Evinrude 85 electric shift and this video is just what I needed!

    Any insight on testing a 1972 65hp 'Rude triumph electric shift? Goes into forward and neutral but just kind of slips and grinds when trying to put in reverse gear. Will not go into reverse

    Hey Brandon, It's always a pleasure to watch you work on old motors.
    Even though I don't have this model motor, but the mechanics are relatively the same with most motors.

    Anyone know what that tool is that's used at 6:10 to free the bearing housing?
    The manual says to pry it off, but there's not much room.. that tool looks perfect

    Hey Brandon just thought I'd check. If you have a cowling for this motor. all I need are the Evinrude emblems on the cowling. Any emblems from a 1969 Evinrude 3 cylinder or V4 will work. But only 1969 they only made this for one year

    I am about to drop the lower unit just to replace the water impeller before starting the engine for the first time. But when you intall the unit back on, how do you get those wires back up to the engine ?!?

  • @MordusdepleinairQuebec

    would anyone know how to place the solenoids back into the gearcase? seems we cannot figure out how to sit them in the housing properly

    Would you have anymore info on the shifting of these lowers? I have forward but a very weak reverse. What is recommended to fix it, solenoid or the part that they interact with?

    Someone wants to trade one of these for my 22 foot Mercruiser. Thanks for showing the gearbox. I do computers and structured cabling for day job. Electrical isn't intimidating. Trying to understand how the dog clutch works. (I get it. Solenoid rod trips the hydraulic pump.)

    135 lbs on all four and get the sparks going, next is carburetors. Wish pump and dog level are not rust damaged. It is in forward gear by spring load.

  • @jean-marcperreault3432

    And how do you know if the water pump is working !?! Where does the water come out ?

    Great Video Brandon, I got a 69 85hp Evinrude with water in lower, took the leg off and found shifter cover gasket was bad and water leaked from it into gear case, drained quiet bit of water and milky thick oil stuff, fearing if it is a rust ball is inside.
    Seems everything moves, once WD40 and PB buster poured in and soaked overnight, and pump seem working. What do you recommend to flush it with? Is the pump screen cleanable by flushing? Thank you so much for take the leg apart with DIY tools.

    My electricshift will go into reverse and nuetral but has a hard time going into forward from time to time. Ill have to go into reverse then neutral then back to forward giving it a few seconds to shift in and out of gear. I have power from the switch all the way to the seloniod. Should i pull my seloniod out and check for corrosion. If corrosion exist. Clean off sand or wire brush off put back together. Or would you think something inside my gearing is jacked up?

    Any tips on how to feed those water pump wires back up into the engine?

    • @davez4172
      @davez4172 Před 8 měsíci

      Remove the lower cowling to get access to the hole the wires run through.
      Tie a small weight (fishing, small nut, etc) to some dental floss and thread the floss down through the hole until it comes out the bottom of the mid section.
      lube up the rubber overmold on your wiring. I use dawn dishwashing liquid.
      tie the floss to the knife connectors on the harness.
      keep tension on the floss as you feed the driveshaft up. Getting a helper is a good idea. The wires will come up through with persistence.
      Now you need to get the rubber overmold's tip to come through the hole. This is tricky with an old harness as the rubber is quite hard. Take care not to damage the wires as you fiddle with this. Do this after you put a bolt or two in the lower unit to secure it and take your time.
      Yeah, there's a lot of 8th grade humor in there....🤭

    Does anybody know if they can start when stuck in forward because of faulty electric shift ? Someone offered me a boat with the same engine as the video.

    • @hmongwild
      @hmongwild Před 4 lety

      Jean-Marc Perreault you can start it in gear. Mine will sometimes give me issues going into forward. It will stall out in forward on me. I would not let it out of forward and just start it up. Itll drain a little more batty juice as your adding more pressure to starting up. But all n all im here to see why my lower unit will not shift into foward at times its just frustrating. Reverse is no problem tho. Good luck with your motor

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  Před 5 lety

      There lies the problem good sir, they are long discontinued.
      Only bet is eBay (none there currently) but keep an eye out.
      Some have done it with chains, hooks, or whatever they can find at the hardware store.
      If you go this route, just keep all the lengths equal, and it'll work.

      @@BrandonsGarage I ended up using three 5/16 J-Bolts with a thread coupler. I threaded the coupler half way and locked them in place by the nuts that came with the J-Bolts. I then used three 5 inch long 5/16 bolts with thick washers. Setting it up took a little patience but it worked like a charm. All the hardware was purchased at my local Lowes.
