- In 1978 Eddie Van Halen started a revolution on a quartet of EL34’s … Today that revolution continues with the new EVH 5150III®S EL34 head.
The EL34 power tubes deliver smoother contours, and greater sag and saturation that evoke a more modern “British” sound, all with more sustain and versatility than ever before.
Channel one boasts an even finer clear-and-compressed clean tone, while channels two and three now possess even more compression and saturation. Other features include a rear-panel Resonance control section that tailors low-frequency response for each channel and a bias testing and adjustment port that allows you to fine-tune the tubes with more ease than ever.
In this video demo guitarist Frankie Lindia runs through each channel to showcase the versatility and power of this amp.

Sounds beyond incredible guys. There has not been a day that's gone by that I don't pinch myself over the dream come true of being an EVH Gear roster artist. Thank you so much for your support of me, our contests and our Talk Show as well.
Sounds like a monster of an amplifier! Much more articulate than I thought it might be… Very cool, Good job EVH!
The chord at 20 seconds in is all I needed to hear. It’s one mean fire breather!
I have played through this and it is fucking brutal sounding best amp I have ever heard.
Perfect demo! 1) you played really well in "the style of VH", instead of trying to play his riffs 2) you showed each channel both rhythm and lead tones 3) you put the info in the description instead of babbling 4) you showed your settings and channel. AWESOME JOB, great amp!!! (Now please make a 15w lunch box version so I can afford one!)
They do make a 15 watt ! Hope you bought it
This is an amazing amp!!!
Nobody spotted that Y&T riff from the song Meanstreak off the 1983 album of the same name?? Cmon guy's i cant be the only one to notice that sweet riff. lol Dave Meniketti one of the most underrated guitar players from the 80s. We are talking a about a guy that is so good that Ozzy got on his knees and begged Dave to be his guitar player.
Raf San I knew it was something of old but couldn't identify. I thought it was Maiden
Raf San i noticed.
Specifically what part at what time in this video I have listened to both but seems like a stretch
I caught that riff immediately!
saber767 At 2:53.
Everyone here saying it does not sound like a plexi.....well no shit. Its not supposed to. Sounds a lot like a Mark V being slaved through the el34 power section of a JCM800. Sounds absolutely insane...wish I could get my hands on one of these...
Dan 2c plus they’re making a 50 watt head el34 version
Looks like Friedman be 100 is the closes modern amp to nail the brown sound !
Perfect description! It has the thickness of a Boogie like a Mark IV or V, but the crunchy goodness of a classic Marshall thanks to those EL34's. This is the perfect amplifier for metal (it's Gojira's amp for fucks sake).
Dan 2c plus I own a Mk V and an EVH, the MK V is hands down a much better amp. You obviously haven’t played through either.
@@MrJackal43 that's what I needed to hear. I have been having a hard time deciding
Excellent review of this killer amp! We've been waiting for a pro recorded demo and we've got it! Thanks! The cleans sound crystal clear and the blue and red channels sound unreal. 🤘😎🤘
He looks like one of the Wayne's World sidekicks
EVH gear is so good it’s the only brand I use now
Mic's can also make that sound more incredible than it is, so don't get too hyped !
Yea..but they do sound incredible. Although I'm a Stealth guy.
Best amp ever made.
Sounds fantastic!
I want this amp head and cabinet! There's an annotation that pops up saying "YOU WANT ONE!" Well played, EVH. You're teasing me just plenty!
Wow this was a really good demo!Sounds awesome!
sweet tone. Still loving my 5150III 50wt!
I agree.. but what I have found playing out live is that channel 2 has a better tone for cutting through the mix for some reason, and found that I used that channel the most without kicking in channel 3 on my 5150III 50watt.
Holy....shit....sounds amazing
I love the clean, it's perfect.
Gotta love Y&T.
Oh im liking it now with the EL34's........yes
Best demo out there, Thanks!
EVH should add a power scaling with the heads just like combos. It will fly off the shelves before you can count to 10.
i'm very impressed with the new evh amp. good job to fender!
Nice riffs! The amp sounds amazing
Great demo ! Pro player !!
Fuck! that sounds fantastic!
Great!
Great review and demo of this amp.
Great demo! Thanks so much!
Pretty sure the demo artist is my dad
Pretty sure?
What ? You didn't recognize him ?
2:20 it reminded me floods
Killer amp
What an amp
That second channel has a sort of Sag...I like it...I own a couple 5150ll's....greatest amp I ever had....
Great player tho dude.
It really does with blue gain under half. over that the sag gets less. Cool!
The lick at 3:19 was really cool...amp sounds great
Agreed. Been trying to learn it but I can't slow it down enough. lol
Old Y&T riff mean streak and yes definitely old Extreme from the 80's Mutha don't wanna go to school today.
You guys should really make a 50 watt version of this, but with shared controls for channel 2/3 instead of 1/2.
Exactly! I have the 50 watt and that channel setup is a huge problem. Truth be told though is that the amp is a little teenage sounding for my taste. Way too compressed.
Damn David Lee Roth plays guitar really well.
Genial demostración.
that's Eddie's stunt double. his name is DAVID. booyah
I thought it was Dave ellefson
Mean Streak!
I hope they'll make a 50 watts version of this head ! :D
Valentin Pau they are it’s already been said
They do and also a 15 watt LBX is available.
This set up is a 9/10. Not a critique on the player and I may be totally wrong but watching the man play and hearing him it seemed to me the string height was a bit too high. I’ve had that dilemma with a guitar for a year now. I do play every day anymore. I definitely do practice for 11 hours daily anymore either . Therefore the chances of my hands strengthening and building stamina to really fly across that fretboard with absolutely clarity are very low. I need to be very warmed up to do it. The rock and a hard place is that I believe the action being so much higher than my other guitar by the same company is that it gives it a sound that it would not have if the strings were lowered. Least important of matters right now though.
It sounds great, but doesn't sound particularly different to the regular EVH 5150III's to me. Which is nice - I can save myself £1500 and just buy a LBX instead 😃
Why is Eddie not demoing his own stuff?
Michael Cramer Because he can't lower himself to demoing a mere 10,000 dollars worth of equipment!Oh yeah, the guitar too brings it up another measly grand!
He has been demoing his stuff since the release of the amp...At every single live show.
Because Ed wants to show that his amp is for other styles of playing too other than just his own and that it is not a one-trick-pony.
does it go to 11?
Thinking of getting this or Marshall plexi super lead. I play from 70s to 80s metal
Great, dude!
yeah!!
What’s that riff that he plays when he switches to blue channel?
Tasty!
Around 1 minute and 35 seconds totally reminds me of Nuno Bettencourt
Try a Granger amp. Kurt's been perfecting Ed's old Plexi tone for years.
Wish he would of played vanhalen songs to hear what it sounds like for the people who are buying this amp for that reason.
I GOT ONE
I love Van Halen stripes, but I don't want to own a guitar, or at least gig with one with stripes otherwise it's too fanboyish. This is coming from someone who owns both this amp and a Wolfgang lol
Sweet, now you've got everything but originality and soul
I think my Peavey 5150 Combo sounds heavier and more organic, but these are very tasty as well!!
Guitar player is slay...
Sounds different than my 6l6 version but not too much! Tighter but maybe less harmonically rich
If only the 50 watt version was like this
I thought Eddie was famous for using 6CA7s? Anyway...it is Eddies tone; he uses these amps, and he hasn't used a plexi rig since the 80s. If Eddie wanted his VH tone from '78, I'm sure he could afford it. Regardless, these amps sound amazing- even the first generation of the Fender/EVH 5150 III heads made in Mexico sounded great.
The front pickup stuff on blue channel really sounded Doug Aldrich-ish
This amp reminds me of Nuno's tone in Extreme, not so much CVH.
id like to hear it beside a 6l6 model.
sounds great, but yes It sounds very similar to the 6L6 version, either way great amps
702gw lv hard time tell when there aren’t any riffs in the demo, this amp is much darker and fuller imo
What's the name of riff at 2:54?
Jim DeRemer Y&T from the song Meanstreak off the 1983 album Meanstreak..Wicked Riff. Ozzy got on his knees and begged Dave Meniketti to be his guitar player thats how underrated this guy is.
Raf San Thank you. I couldn't for the life of me remember where I heard that riff before. It's an awesome riff by an awesome guitar player.
Jim DeRemer No problemo Jim and yeah those early Y&T record's had some great riffs and songs in them.
@@efilnikufesin2069 Knock you out, classic Dio like riff
Private Ryan just called, says he wants his boots back.
Y&T Cool bro!
My god, that pop when switching chanels...Eddie brings it up every time when talikng about these amps: "No pops whatsoever!".... yeah right
There's that tone, that 'Brown' tone. The rest is up to the player.
I don't know... it sounds very compressed, somehow narrow and super congested in the mids. It's like a very processed sound in compare to more open, raw and punchy sound of old Marshal Plexis, SLs or JCMs... Is this the tone people fell in love with? Hmmm... Well I always know I hate over compressed tones ^^
What's the resonance set to?
sounds nice, but nothing like what I think of as a Van Halen tone.
Why is Channel 2 so distorted? You have three channels, it would be cool if channel 2 was a bit more brown-sound-Plexi-ish. Awesome playing BTW!
He's got too much gain on that channel, check out the video, it's passed 12 o clock.
The EVH 5150 iii of all types either regular or stealth, have way more gain that we ever need.
I like the sound, but it could be too much gain for others, it's only preference. : )
THATS CAUSE EDDIE SAID WHEN HE CHANNEL SWITCHED BETWEEN 2 AND 3 HE DIDNT WANT A BIG DIFFERENCE IN TONE, HE HAD THE STEALTH SET UP LIKE THAT BUT IF YOU WANT LESS GAIN THEN TURN THE GAIN DOWN, THEY HAVE THAT AMOUNT OF GAIN CAUSE IF YOU WANT LESS GAIN YOU JUST TURN THE GAIN DOWN, BUT IF YOU WANT MORE GAIN THEN THE AMP CAN DISH OUT THEN YOUR SCREWED, ITS PRACTICALITY, ALWAYS BETTER TO HAVE IT AND NOT NEED IT THEN TO NEED IT AND NOT HAVE IT!
WHAT? I can't HEAR you...
Because this is a METAL amp. A METAL amp needs GAIN. And if you actually set it up right, all that gain can be used correctly.
Actually Ch2 has WAY less gain than the 6L6 model. I've had them both. EL34 Channel blue under 12 o' clock has a very JMP "soft flat hollow boxy classic sound" that's the best way I can describe those Marshalls. Over 12 o' clock goes into Ratt/Lynch/VH2 territory and the mids wake up a bit. When I first got my EL34 model (after having the 6L6 model),I thought it might have a weak tube or something but after speaking with EVH techs, they told me the gain is supposed to be very different on this model. And it is. It's really kind of odd how the gain advances, not like most amps. The feel of it changes. At say 10:00 it has a slower attack fatter overdrive sound and over noon it changes to a faster tighter type distortion. A lot of fun to play when you spend some time with it and notice the surprising nuances instead of cranking the gain and playing detuned beard metal on the channel.
l wonder if EVH will make a 50 watt mini head version???
They did !
Anyone know the riff starting @ 2:52?
Y&T - Mean Streak
Does anyone know the name of the first song he plays?
Sounds very much like Doug Aldrich's tone. :P
What organ would someone need to sell to be able to get one of these with a 4x12..? Asking for a friend.
I just put my left testicle on eBay for the 2x12 combo😀👍
Who manufactures this amp? Are they going to make combo versions?
Uh oh! I wanted a Friedman, but this is sounding pretty great. And its the El34's. I hate 6l6 based amps for 80s. They can sound great for rhythm, but 6l6's don't sound good for soloing. That's just me I supposed.
Sounds like Eddie.
Nice demo - let the gear do all the talking - important
WHY won't Ed just at long last do an amp with Marshall? His own amps sound okay, but none has ever had THAT brown sound. The VH tone is a Marshall plexi. Not a Peavey or a Fender.
The Friedman BE-100 head nails that Plexi tone but is wayyyy overpriced. They do however make a 50 watt Small Box model.
sounds just like nunos tone
I think you hit it spot on.
Fuzzier and squishier than Nuno's tone with less highs but pretty close.
just add a bill lorance pickup :)
SSVplus its got a few knobs on it that can correct that.
Nuno at 3:36
Imagine if eddie made an amp with Marshall
AwesomeMachine YES
I think they knocked on his door quite a few times ;)
It STILL doesn't sound like his earlier sound like HE said it would 🤔
Friedman BE- 100 gets way closer to the cranked Plexi sound. But where i live, it costs around $5000 ! I think I'll pass and stick with what i got.
This guy has to let his knees breathe
wow partuza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
does it djent?
It might be a bit too much for my house.
50w PLEASE!
Why doesn't Eddie ever do his own product demos
rolando e. limon he's slowly starting to lose his memory, I'm sure from years of alcohol and drug abuse. It's actually starting to show in his gigs too, missing his cues and forgetting solos
rolando e. limon he actually did a demo when the 5150 "Stealth" first came out
I wish the EVH team would make a simple amp with few knob and make it truly sound like an over driven Plexi. These mew amps are not that Original sound. I think if they made an EVH Brownie, they would fly off the shelves. 50 watts with some type of power soak
Totally agree with you.
the lbx?
Psycho Jack Jack Eddie wasn't going for that when he helped design the amp. Like he said, over the years his taste in tone has changed. I can say though I've played these amps and with a little tweaking you can dial in that sound pretty damn close. I saw Eddie a couple years ago and the d songs sound great through his new amps
there's also the victory bd1, and ceriatone 2061 with the split cathode and cascade mods fyi
I've never tried it, but you might wanna check out the Metropoulos Metro-Plex 100 watt amp.
Man they have the treble and presence super high. I'd have to tame that lol
now imagine it with the guitar in tune
Your stupid
It was in tune
it must suck to not be able to tell
@@abnzg yeah that’s you lmao🤣
What about the guitar?
Any info?
Looks like an EVH Wolfgang. Not sure which model.
It's a striped WG Special. Coming soon. :)
It is the new EVH Wolfgang Special Striped Guitar. Here is a link to buy one.
www.cmcguitars.com/evh-wolfgang-special-striped-ebony-fretboard-guitar/
these amps have too much gain and hiss for my taste. David Bray amps are more the early Van Halen sound. EVH should make an amp for the people wanting the over driven Plexi sound. follow the David Bray model
