- In a tender, romantic gesture, John Clark (Richard Gere) purchases a single red rose before heading to surprise his wife Beverly (Susan Sarandon) at her workplace. Yearning to rekindle their connection, John sweeps Beverly into an impromptu dance right there in the middle of the store to the amusement and delight of onlookers. His ardent declaration that she's the only partner he wants to dance with melts her heart. Caught up in the joyful moment, the reunited couple decides to take their dance to a local studio's party later that night.

Shall We Dance? follows the story of John Clark, a professional in the midst of a stagnant marriage and unfulfilling career. His life is reinvigorated when he discovers a passion for ballroom dancing after sneaking into the blackened windows of a local studio one night. Though initially keeping his new hobby secret from his workaholic wife and family, John's double life eventually catches up to him. As he becomes increasingly enamored with his talented instructor Paulina and the dance world, John must navigate the strain it puts on his marriage while rediscovering his own zest for life. A heartwarming, comedic journey ensues as he chases an exciting new dream.

When Richard Gere came up the escalator, I'm sure every woman wished she was Susan Sarandon. I know I did. When I realized the date this film was released, this couple got married the same year as my husband and I, which made this scene really hit home. I watch this clip whenever I can for these reasons. Thank you to the cast, crew and their families for making this film possible. It is true love.

I watched this movie angry. I was angry because I just KNEW he was cheating on his wife in his heart and I hated that because, as a married man I wanted him to be better than that. This scene may have been romantic for women to watch because of the handsome Richard Gere in a tux but for me and other men I know it was a redemption of what we thought was going to be a cheating heart. It was a man choosing his wife above all and remembering why he adored her. I loved that and it immediately moved this movie to one of my top 10 favorites.
Can’t watch this without a tissue every time. It never gets old. I will have been dancing with my wife 40 years this June ❤

When hubby and I with our teenage daughter went to see this movie, the house was packed with gentle old ladies! We were the youngest in the cinema and already in our fifties! Wonderful film of which the super tango danced by Gere and Lopez is still played at our dancesport competitions where hubby and I photograph dancers in action! Simply beautiful!

Love this. As my husband was getting sicker from heart + lung disease during lockdown I occasionally slipped into my red dress & played lady in red & danced with him on the balcony. Sadly he died January 2022. Asleep in death awaiting a resurrection back here on earth soon. Looking forward to being reunited with him ❤

I watched this years back now. This beautiful snippet from the movie will entice me to watch it again. Papa Al and I will hopefully reach our number 63 wedding anniversary July 14, 2024, God‘s plan we accept.
I only found this gem recently, but it is one of my favorite films.
I still remember the wedding I went to when they played this music. A beautiful couple alone on the dance floor making the ultimate commitment to be there for each other for decades to come. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house and for a brief, shining moment we all shared in the notion that this was love and it was an honour to be a part of it.
They divorced eight years later.

Organizers of various tournaments were being criticized because of lack of women in Open tournaments where usually only men played. Women weren’t forbidden from playing in such tournaments but, apparently, they didn’t feel comfortable. Organizers began to promote these tournaments to women. Women joined. They wore low cut blouses to distract men. Can you imagine men trying to figure out a move and staring at blouses for the entire game in every tournament game? Some clothing rules were set. Not sure about details.

@@claudiamanta1943 Absolutely, real story. I just googled and found the description of the incident and FIDE (world chess federation) dress code policy. It mostly applies to high ranking tournaments. Casual tournament policies are up to organizers.

People say he cheated on his wife in his heart not true, what it is, with men especially his character he felt he wasn’t alive any more in his relationship he felt he wasn’t in charge he felt his wife was more of the dominate alpha of the family he wanted too. Held board. So he wanted to take lead in something he found out he was good at and once he learned he was going to share it with his wife let her know he is the Alpha

If Richard Gere, instead of Matthew Broderick, had played Harold Hill in the remake of The Music Man -- they would've had a hit, instead of the lame, "cheap imitation" it is. Broderick would've been much better at being the little sidekick who used to be Hill's schill, and Gere would've nailed the role of Harold "flim-flam" Hill!!!
