/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down Star Wars a New Hope.
-
Taking us to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away this movie revolutionised the movie industry and it still stands as one of the best Sci-Fi films of all time. This was a film I fell in love with as a kid and I can't even count how many times I've watched it. Throughout this video we're gonna be breaking it all down and going through it all scene by scene to talk about all the details in it.
lets blow this thing and go home
Now according to the legends George Lucas first came up with the after he made his first full length feature film titled THX 1138.
Lucas had been a big fan of the Flash Gordon serials and he'd been planning to adapt them in some way into his own work in films. Apparently at 1971 Cannes Film Festival when he was showing THX he started putting feelers out to see if he could buy the rights for Flash Gordon. However, they were owned by Dino De Laurentis and thus Lucas decided to do his own space opera.

I came for Ryan Aery’s Mum
(Jokes)
You read the life magazine for all this information didn’t you. I’ve read it about 10 times already 😅
This is just amazing, you really been putting in "Heavy"....work lately. Thanks so much for these, they've picked my spirits up while being down lately. Quick question, during the ESB portion you show a scene of someone eating dinner, & ready what looks like an older movies interpretation of a future newspaper that shows "The World Tonight". What movie is that scene from? It's killing me, thanks!
NO.. it wold be an awesome video if you don't consider the Disney Lesbian parodies as part of Lucas work man.. Is so sad to think that our grand kids are going to think that this Disney trash is actually part of Star Wars....+.... what a piece of shit world man !!.. what a piece of shit world...+..... they did it .. they win.. Star Wars fans are craning...... the characters we love growing up are destroyed.. humiliated.. and replaced by this bunch of shit cunts...+..
I thought r2d2 was named after the synth used for his sounds ,not coz hes second to c3p0.&it wasn't shepperton studios for the OG film,it was Elstree studios, borhamwood UK,there's a George Lucas sound stage there.Shepperton was used in later films.
Have you ever heard the tragedy of Han Solo the blind? He was the Corellian smuggler that lost his sight for exactly the same amount of time his girl was in a metal bikini.
!!!! It’s not something the Jedi will tell you
THANK GOD, a 2 hour video to keep me sane at work
What do you do for work where you can watch a two hour video?? Hahah, hopefully not open-heart surgery or something ... :P
I remember seeing the first movie in the theaters in 1977 at 15 - it was just incredible seeing that opening scene with the star destroyer coming in and how long that moment went. I was just awestruck in my seat. The crowd cheering when the Death Star was destroyed too, it was an amazing experience! The 20th Century Fox intro tune is indelibly linked to Stars for me. Thanks for a great breakdown of the original 3 movies.
I was ten and saw it in the cinema. Unforgettably awesome experience
I was 6, and I remember my parents had to go see it first to make sure it was OK for a kid. I was hooked from that moment on...
Wow. I was old enough to remember the 3rd one (Ret of Jedi). It blew my mind. But living in a world with NONE of this… must have been incredible to behold.
Totally agree! I was 5 when it came out, so of course my whole life became Star Wars.
I was about 12 when I first saw it. Great movie. I already liked the older 50's and 60's era sci-fi movies and shows
We appreciate the time and work put into these Ultimate videos. These Ultimate breakdowns are better than the movie documentaries out there.
Ey thank you so much
never has just three movies changed cinema as much as Star Wars. From Production to how the plot plays out. Star Wars is a milestone in cinema that has yet to be replicated, even by itself.
Fantastic breakdown! I was 7 yo when the first one came out, and regularly rewatch the OG trilogy a couple of times a year. And while I'm no expert, I do consider myself to be fairly well versed in SW trivia.
That being said, I learned a ton from this! I constantly found myself being surprised by an interesting tidbit that I'd never heard. This video brought an even deeper appreciation for these films that have been such a huge part of my life, and I didn't think that was possible. Thank you for that!
Thank you mate, glad there was still new stuff for people
“I keep telling my wife size matters not” IM DYING 😂😂😂💀 and this is why you’re my favorite Paul 😂
Appreciate the breakdowns Paul keep up the amazing work
The updated Darth Vader and Emperor scene in episode five is so much better and cleaner dialogue wise than the original I think
Dropped a like before even starting it.
ETA - didn’t realize I’ve already watched these but still rewatching anyway.
Seeing this in a theater during that opening month was an unparalleled movie-going experience. The main things I remember is the power of that soundtrack when the movie started. It was intense. And of course, all the special effects were and action were amazing, especially the light sabers and Tie-fighters. When the death star exploded, it was so loud I think it blew out some of the low-end speakers in the theater.
My final take away was the audience vibe. It was the first movie I had seen where the audience was an active part of the show. Everyone would erupt with laughter, cheers and applause at the appropriate times. For example, People went NUTS when Han Solo and the millennium falcon came back and clipped Vader to save Luke so we could take the final shot. Lastly, it was the very first movie I attended where the entire audience applauded at the end of the movie. Lots of positive energy in those theaters that summer. There is also a contest amongst all our friends to see who could see it the most. One of my friends saw it over 20 times in theater.
Definitely the coolest movie theater experience I've ever had.
(That's not counting drive-in theater experiences. But those had nothing to do with the movie playing.)
I wish you’d have mentioned when Luke came down the ladder after blowing up the Death Star he says “Carrie!” When he sees Leia 🤣
Did they never change that in the re-releases?
@@carmawarlock8455 which rerelease 🤣
Bro you hit me with that Jedi mind trick 1:58:14 lmao
I did hit the like button afterwards ngl
9:05 ... By the gods! I first saw this opening scene in a cinema back in 1977 with the lasers flashing through a layer of cigarette smoke; and it still gives me goosebumps.
Holy moly! This video breakdown is *EPIC!* 😎
Thank you so much Paul. 🙏🏻
The Empire Strikes Back is and will always be my favorite of the OT because that is one of the few times that my father who is now deceased took me to the the movies and the Luke and Vader characters mirror the relationship that I had with my father love the breakdown of these timeless films!
THX 1138 was the license plate of George's car. A car that he totaled. His seat belt broke and he was thrown from the vehicle, which was a lucky break because the car wound up wrapped around a tree
"Vader's on his a$$ like the neglectful father that he always was..." is Paul's quote of the year!!!
it's about time somebody did a video about Star Wars!
Watched & loved your individual breakdowns of these. Now it's a full breakdown like your Dune one, so awesome buddy.
Glad you enjoyed it!
sweeeet love the long form break downs of classics movies.
Thank you Paul
American Graffiti is my favorite GL film.
Star Tours movie would be a win for Disney❤
Luke's Jabba plan makes perfect sense. Han was an officer in the Rebel military, so he was too valuable to be left with Jabba.
First, he put Lando, a gambler, in first to gather Intel. Then he
put R2 in to get a layout of the palace. Now, if you're going to rescue Han, you can't take a slab of carbonite out, so you have to thaw him out, but Leia knew he would be blind from hibernation sickness. So when they get caught and put Han in the dungeon, who's already there? Chewie. Not only that, but Leia is now by Jabbas side.
When Luke comes in, his first attempt wasn't supposed to work, it was to make Jabba feel like he had the upper hand.
Finally, once they're outside of the palace, the real plan can happen because Han is now free and can see, Luke has his saber and Leia was able to kill Jabba.
SIMPLE
Sometimes I like to watch A New Hope thinking that at one point, this was it. There was no plan for more. There was no EU. This was it. Viewing it under that light, it just makes A New Hope an even more perfect film. Because I know even if NONE of the other media was created, I would STILL be just as obsessed with Star Wars. And to be made almost 50 years ago. It's just insane. It's insane how much of our lives are influenced by this movie.
Its unfortunate we won't get a Breakdown of the Prequel Trilogy. I love the OT but to me as a kid, whose first Star Wars movie was Ep.1 those are my SW movies, saw all 3 in theaters. Would love a breakdown of them. Still a stellar video though!
The "No" by Vader in ROTJ is the worst change ever
Paul put in some work for this one!
Thanks for the video
17:54 so the jawas are literally just selling the Lars back their own droid… C-3PO lived on the Lars estate right after he was built… He was the family droid literally built by a member of that family, the father of the boy who was purchasing him right then it truly is a lot to wrap your head around. I guess the most important thing is that Jawas always selling you back your own shit.
Looooool can’t knock the hustle
Fun fact, the sound at 1:14:34 is also the AT-AT gun sound.
Just a massive thank you Paul, this had me glued from start to finish. Really appreciate the effort you put in to all your vids but this one is an all time fave already.
I love the way Vader ignited his saber slowly during the first fight with Luke. It was perfectly ominous.
This got me through the slog of the work afternoon! Loved it! Thank you!
Haha thank you
Solo shot first I saw it in the theater. It was a western movie trope… More Clint Eastwood less John Wayne…
Thanks for this long and detailed look at one of my favourite wonderful trilogies.
Impressive...Most impressive
This was a great video bro! I was born in 1991 so I wasn't alive when did the original Star wars trilogy came out and even though I had seen the movies honestly it was The phantom menace that made me a fan of Star wars! I've went back and re-watched all the films as an adult and I still prefer the prequels over the original!
Dude I saw TPM in theaters like 3 times haha
Just finished the Mad Max vid and you drop this behemoth. Let’s go.
Great and fun video as always, Paul!
Love this!!! THANKS for this!!!!!
1:56:54 I've seen this movie a million times and never noticed this. Nice catch Paul.
Thank you
I always hit the like button. Thanks for being my best mate!!!!
This is amazing, thank you!
Awesome Vid!
Thank You very much for Your Work! Greetings from Germany
In my opinion, one of the best trilogies ever made. Also, the best breakdown I've seen thus far 😊
Ey thank you
Yes!! Lets go. Gonna get in to this when i get home. Just come to leave my comment and say.....
Big ups Def.💯👊🏾
What the hell when in the world did i already like the video ….. goddamn Jedi mind tricks
this is awesome thank you so much for this episode, respect
Glad you enjoyed it!
You’re a king for this video! What a watch
I think the score of Star Wars has much more to do with Gustav Holst's Planets.
Amazing Depth!!! Killer breakdown.
Kudos for using a clip from the comedy classic Used Cars!
Paul, IT'S ALL CONNECTED!!!
This is a masterpiece worthy of the OT. Bravo 👏
Thank you
I can't watch this rn but I promise I'll get to it soon. Thanks Paul!
Is this one video. Sweet tap dancing baby Jesus. Respect.
The hyperdrive failing sound was also in Temple Of Doom when the plane's propellors were shutting down.
How have i never realized "Return of the Jedi" could imply Vader's/Anakin's return to being a Jedi??? 🤯🤯🤯
Great shot Paul! that was one in a million!
Also thank you for the Weekly Planet shoutout. James and Mason are probably like " Heavy's boilers? said what? alright..? Mason, did you pay him for this?"
Awesome breakdown, Paul knocked it out the park!!! Rewatching ROTJ, this has always “bugged” me, how much force lightening does it takes to “kill” a Jedi. Luke got blasted pretty heavy by Palpatine before Vader saved him?
I got to see empire in theaters last weekend for may 4th. The Vader scene hit so much harder, especially after the obi Wan series made me love Vader so much more
Utterly superb.
SMASHING the like button
This is EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!
Dude lets GOOOO!! Thanks Definition! (Deep cut I know)
Haha deep cut
brother a 2:29:07 break down is the most beautiful thing I could ask for thank you
yessssssss weekly planet shoutout!!!!
Feel like alot was left out but i heard so many things i never knew so ill take it. Things like Luke Calling Leia "Carrie" at the end of a new hope. Or Lando switching back and forth between wearing and not wearing gloves as he hangs over the sarlaac pit. I swear there was some weird easter egg with chewy reassembling C-3PO in the sky city too.
Paul, Thank you for these breakdowns. Empire is my favorite movie of all time. OT is the best trilogy of all time. I love this trilogy!
Much appreciated
2:19:29 oh han.,... copping a feel when your bird has been shot in the shoulder... 😅😅😅
At 1hour 7mins you said he chokes Krennic, but it's Admiral Motti. Great vid. Thanks
It's just a little thing, but I love at the end of ESB when the MF jumps, Vader turns to walk away from the window, but before doing so he does one brief look back out the window before walking away. Is he having a SMH moment, silently giving props to Luke for getting away, mumbling under his breath about "how hard it is to get good help these days," or all of the above?
I always found Vader inspecting the new lightsaber with shock and respect
51 minutes in when frank was doing takes for yoda i just said, he reminds me of kermit. Then you say he's kermit! 🤯
Please acknowledge lando wearing hans clothes. Its always confused me
thanks!!!!
Talking about the 'ice cream' maker in this movie for some reason makes me think of another iconic film 'Back To The Future' and it's sequels.....I don't know if I'm actually suffering from a dose of the "Mandela Effect" as I've always been led to believe the Delorean's 'fuel' tank was also an ice cream maker too !?'
Out of all the special editions Ep V is the one to basically only benefit from alterations.
Its crazy how much Davis Prowse and Rick Moranis sounded alike.
Ya I feel for Prouse but I'm so glad they didn't use his voice
excellent video 😀😀😀😀
Thank you
12:44 - "..part of the costume you might not've noticed before". I thought you were going to point out that the left cheek on Vader's helmet is actually silver (but looks black due to the reflection, just like the effect on C3-PO's leg which you did mention). I'd never noticed the silver cheek and I learned about it in one of Adam Savage's videos where he gets to see and inspect the original prop helmet from '76/'77.
18:18 the Star Wars from a certain point of view series has a short story covering R5D4 being persuaded by R2D2 to sacrifice his chance tone bought by the Lars so R2D2 can complete its mission.
jim henson always did kermits voice...
I knew I couldn't be the only one who caught that.
The Resistance, or the Jedis, just so happened to be in the market for an R2 unit so they pick one up from some junk dealers and it just happened to be the one with the blueprints for an Empire space station. And it was only a second choice after another R2 unit was rejected as defective. From R2D2's electronic blueprints, acquired from Princess Leaia's espionage undertakings, they know the fatal vulnerability of the Empire's space station. With the space station being maybe just hours away from being in orbital position to zap the Resistance home planet, all these Jedi craft are dispatched to attempt to score that elusive shot into the space station's vulnerable spot. Darth Vader realises that the anti-aircraft batteries of the space station are insufficient and so he flies out to take the Jedi craft out one by one. That is about the jist of it.
given lucas' penchant for giving his space characters names that closely resemble nouns in languages he does not speak, i'm always surprised that people don't point out that chewbacca sounds very much like 'cobaka' (so-BA-ka), the ukrainian word for 'dog.'
I saw A New Hope on HBO (mom couldn't get us to the theater). Then I saw The Empire Strikes Back in the theater (it was my 12th birthday and all my slumber party friends went along with us). I have seen every Star Wars movie and streaming show since then and will continue to do so. I am deeply sentimentally bound to this franchise ❤ Excluding Jar Jar 😅.
Lando ha the Bespin cars fire at Han to warn him away? Interesting theory... I aways thought it was a warning shot to keep him in line or maybe they thought of shooting him down till Vader instructed them to let him land and to lure him in instead. Either way, you get the sense they're in for a trap... The timing of Vader's appearance was still a shock though.
awesome video
Yes
Please do a breakdown on Vanilla Sky you guys would kill it!
What do you mean you don’t know? Han shot first. It’s still self defense if a person is holding a deadly weapon to you and saying they have been looking forward to killing you. It doesn’t taint nobility. It makes him smart
41:26 I swear to this day that the guy right behind Luke is Judge Reinhold.
Is everyone color blind or am I? The milk is green The Last Jedi.
I could listen to the engine whine of The Falcon forever.
Uncle Kevin Spoilers is the 🐐 of breakdowns
1:36:46 he said Luke, end of story.
The Mandulla Efftc is real.
The make up of Anakin burned, shows the fire made the head wounds, not Obi. You can see the top wound while the suit is being fitted and when he burns in Ep 3. Obi clearly breaks the mask from Darth's forehead to his mouth.
i always took return of the jedi to refer to the jedi, plural. we were told from the beginning that vader hunted and destroyed the jedi, and lukes triumph shows the return of the jedi as a whole. we really thought luke was the only jedi at the time.
"Hello There"
If you haven’t already, please watch thumb wars. It’s so funny! And that’s what I think about now when Luke was whining(and you said he got made fun of in the video). There’s a part in thumb wars that makes fun of that. “Harvest, harvest!” 😅😂😂
