    Sonic and the Black Knight came out during a time where the Sonic games were trying just about everything. We saw some really weird directions, and at that point it seemed like they were throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. This time we got a direct sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, and it would be the last of the Sonic storybook franchise. Summoned by Merlin's grand-daughter: Merlina, as her champion to fight against the Black Knight. With a talking sword named Caliburn in hand, Sonic will run, jump, and slash his way through this medieval tale. But does slapping a sword on Sonic and Knuckles make them cooler? Or does it lead to some very weird, almost fanfiction moments?

  • @martinaguiluz4063
    @martinaguiluz4063 Před 4 lety +22

    Damn, it's sad that Jirard didn't see the effort put into this game. I mean yeah the game has its clunky parts but for being a sequel to Secret Rings, this game improved in almost every aspect (gameplay, story, soundtrack, mechanics). Even the complains Jirard had in the review (when he talked about sonic needing to stop to do qte prompts for the missions, or how when sonic needed to stop to slash enemies, making the game pretty stop-n-go) had solutions in the Blacksmith system. There you can use all (yes all of the items. Believe me, Every item works) to upgrade the style you're playing. You can get perks like slashing while running (without interupting the flow of speed), doing the villager quests without qte's (just having Sonic running past by them) and finally a style that is more focused on speed.
    By gaining followers, you can improve the style of "knight" that you're playing. This, I think, adds a good amount of replay value in this game. Trying out different styles changes the pace of this a bit. Also the extra "legacy" missions served as an homaje to the series. I really see this game as a better sequel to secret rings and actually see this as a decent sonic game, because of the amount o "fan service" and call outs to the series this has. To me, this game is an underrated decent Sonic game, too bad that Jirard didn't see this though😢

It's just that he didn't bother trying them out (making his completion of the game all the more boring). Still, I can see why the comtrol hinders the accesibility of this game to fans. Mellon, in a way it can be. He does complain about the sluggishness a bit too much.
      But if you pay attention he does say the world and the story could’ve been better and bigger like an event (something SEGA used to treat every Sonic game). He also says how going fast and doing the swordplay in this game feels not polished enough. It doesn’t exactly have the synergy it needed to have and the levels sure aren’t built for it either. And I thought that’s what the all the Sonic games do. In here, it’s binary: “you’re either [going fast] or you’re not. You’re either [swinging the sword] or you’re not.” It tries to satisfy swordplay with speed but it fails both. It’s OK in the Boost games or the racing games, but this one really needed more time in the oven to make everything flow better because this game needed that “Classic mentality” the most.

    • @youmeltube
      @youmeltube Před 4 lety +2

      @@jasonnguyen1072 The swordplay and speed flow seamlessly if you actually know how the combat works. You can homing attack + sword swing to barrel through series of enemies while slicing them all, do backflips and slash at once, fall down on foes with a spinning cutter and then blast off at full speed, etc. Theres a lot more to the combat than just mindless swinging or stopping in place.

    • @jasonnguyen1072
      @jasonnguyen1072 Před 4 lety +1

      Mellon, yes and I know what you’re talking about when you’re referring to that. And if you use those things then yes you can enjoy the game. But there are other stuff the game puts out that completely kill the synergy of it. Especially for the times you are going slow on foot. Such as sword itself (especially for Sonic), is especially not that fun. It needed more attacks than three slashes and jumping (both separate mechanics btw). Maybe a combo or completely new mechanic even that can be more complicated but satisfying to pull off on the land other than a block and three sword slashes. Back flipping and slashing can be cool (especially when dodging enemies) but it can only satisfy you for so long. Same with the platforming, it is stuff like these that are bringing the franchise down due to it being like a generic platformer like the 2D sections and to an extent Generation’s 3D sections (Forces and HD/7th Gen Unleashed too).
      The main attacks are cool yes and you can have fun with them and they flow well, but they are what also kill the game and the attacks you do on land and foot don’t work well with these attacks at all. The Spin Attack is the only real satisfying way to get work done in base as like you said it blasts you off when you land. But it also encourages people to spam it instead of actually using the other moves. Same with the Jump Dash (“Homing Attack”). The Soul Surge is also an excellent way of doing things but it is what also killed the game in terms of level design and gameplay as well. It’s basically like the Boost + Homing Attack but with perhaps more skill and finesse. And like the Boost games, the whole of the gameplay is only subsidiary compared to that except for platforming where you can use the backflip and the sword slash but can’t exactly go faster due to the large gaps unless you have the Soul Surge or Jump Dash.

    Uh.....yeah.
    Kinda missing the crafting feature aren't we? Crafting swords for the Round Table Knights is technically a reward. Also there are medals to change up sounds which is kinda dope. Also the 1 on 1 fights are pretty dope, especially the rematch vs Shadow's Knightsona.
    Why is that not included in the review? Along with that, aren't usually final fights and the story included in these reviews or am I missing something?
    The game's referencing a pretty nice story and even goes somewhat deeper with references like using the alternative name of Excalibur; Caliburn.
    The game surely is short and some of the challenges are god-awful but if you play properly, you got potential to rush through levels (for the most part) like never before.
    They also included some gameplay mechanics like perfect shielding which gave you meter which is a crucial feature to use in the rematch against Shadow.
    Also how can you not talk about the later part of the game? The writing is so good, you feel like you got time against you, the plottwist was not one you would expect easily and this game probably has the absolute best transformation and the most epic transformation cutscene to go with it (except maybe the butt cape but that at least has comedic value).
    The audio is one of the best ones as well and it doesn't use the cringe writing they have done in the newer cames following this one.
    I'm kinda sorry but I do not get behind this review at all. A lot of the positive things are overlooked/ignored while only negativity got showcased. Considering that Sonic and a storybook should not go together, it's a pretty fun story.

    • @FierceSonic100
      @FierceSonic100 Před 4 lety +2

      I know this is a seven-month-old comment, but agreed. This review in general feels off.
      And for whatever reason, there feels to be a bit of hypocrisy? Like he says the environments and such looks unoriginal and dull, yet show the giant trolls dragging wagons filled with people and then Sonic grinding on a string from a giant crossbow into a wreaked castle. The environments here look amazing for what they were going for. And like you said, he states that the items don't do anything... yet you use them to craft better weapons.
      He also continuously states that this game had no love put into it and was made lazily with a "why not" mentality thrown in, which is a statement with no support and one I strongly disagree with. The improved gameplay, the different gameplay styles, the unlockables with multitudes of references to Sonic and King Arthur lore respectively, the inclusion of fanart, the new characters in multiplayer mode, the overall style of this game, the ambition; this game feels and looks like it has more love put into it than any Sonic since Generations.
      And this isn't even my favorite nor one of my favorite games! I'm not a fan of the gameplay on the Wii (which is really my biggest issue with the game) and I know there are flaws in this game, but there is a lot this game does that deserves more credit. Like you said, it seems like he just overlooked/ignored the positives while amplifying/showcasing the negatives, having the mentality that "Sonic games were rough until Colors" as fact. It just felt really off, since I usually enjoy his reviews of games in the past.

    • @Bornheck
      @Bornheck Před 4 lety +7

      Benjamin Oakden You’re definition of “bad” is is what’s laughable. The only bad Sonic Boom game was Rise of Lyric. Shattered Crystal was boring, but not bad. Fire and Ice was actually pretty good. Sonic Lost World was great. People just didn’t like it because it was different. 1/2 of Sonic Unleashed wasn’t bad gameplay-wise, just length-wise, Shadow the Hedgehog was only bad story-wise, sure Sonic R, Triple Trouble was fine. It seems all you’re doing is looking at the controversial stuff and calling it “terrible” even when it’s not. And no I’m not defending this game out of nostalgia. I just played this for the first time LAST MONTH. I can’t GET nostalgic for this game yet. Multiple points he had in this video are just plain and simply WRONG. “I wish the Wii Remote was only used for swordplay.” Uh, IT IS! There IS nothing else it does! “All the different stage themes are generic.” Ah yes, I remember those other Sonic games where you fired a ballista into a castle wall then proceeded to grind on the rope. Heck, I remember there being a medieval castle level PERIOD. I also remember that OTHER game where giants are pulling enormous prison wagons. Or that OTHER Sonic game with a mining town inside of a volcano. Or that OTHER Sonic game with a magical snowy forest where the trees come alive and try to kill you. Or that OTHER Sonic game where you go through a dragon’s lair. And of COURSE he wasn’t enjoying the game, just look at how he plays! He used the Soul Gauge correctly maybe ONCE. He kept slamming into enemies to halt all momentum, then proceeded to slash at them instead of either slashing from the get-go or using the chaining buzzsaw homing attack. “I can’t get five stars immediately.” It’s a game with an RPG-style LEVEL UP SYSTEM. Of COURSE you’re not gonna be as good as you can be at the beginning of the game. “This system probably wouldn’t even be better if they added more swords.” This is just making me think he didn’t actually play the game and just watched the Game Grumps. THERE ARE MORE SWORDS! And they add a lot of customization to the game! This “review” is nothing but biased crap

Getting followers for doing cool things, finding secrets, and taking alternate routes through a level, and getting some sort of completionist reward like artwork, music, extra enemies, big head mode, etc. for number of followers could be a cool thing. it just sounds like it wasn't well implemented.
