  • In this video I react to a video by Frank Tedesco where he takes song requests on Omegle, works out the song by ear and performs it. As I spend a lot of time on my channel playing and performing songs by ear, I thought it would be interesting to watch someone else do it and give you some insight!

    i think its worth noticing that Frank does not simply want to 100% copy a song. He makes it his own. Often (all the time) it becomes better than the original.

      He does have a talent for taking the kind of sanitised repetitive motif of most modern songs and expanding it into something satisfying on the fly. His renditions are almost always way better than the original, which is why he is worth watching.

    Another thing that I really like about Frank's playing is how solid he is rhythmically. In addition to being able to play a wide variety of intricate rhythms, he is also play two rhythms at once (not just hemiolas, but more complicated combinations, too), and it feels like it doesn't slow him down at all. It feels like he just has huge amounts of practice under his belt to cover almost anything that gets thrown at him rhythmically. His expressiveness is also a huge plus, as you already mentioned.

    I did see a video of Frank talking about how he figures out songs, he has relative pitch not perfect pitch and most of it is just recognising the chord progression shape for example I-V-vi-IV, and then knowing how to play them all in every key. Then obviously also determining the melody over the top.

    And for the ignorant people who are trying to make a challenge and comparing both of Matthew and Frank I suggest to either just listen to the video or don’t watch it simple as that your not forced to see Matthew’s videos and he’s not pretending to be better or he’s bargaining about it he’s just stating straight up facts about the notes and the chords and the melody if you can’t grasp what you’re watching then I would understand but don’t hate and spread negativity just because you have never touched an instrument in your life

It would be amazing if you make a video about anime music. ESPECIALLY because you don't know it. I would die to know your reactions to the music, the anime itself and overall the approach on how music elevates and underlines the specific anime's and moments in it. A lot of them are so memorable that everyone knows the anime immediately and gets the emotion just from some chords of it.

    • @pjbpiano
      @pjbpiano Před 5 měsíci

      Chord progressions have to first be internalized before you can recognize it externally.
      What this basically means is, you have to practice playing the most common chord progressions over and over by yourself until it begins to be predictable in your ears as you play them.
      Once you get to that point, recognizing them from external sources like songs actually becomes possible and even easier if you have practiced a lot of the four chord cycle songs.
      So focus from internalizing the chords in the context of progressions and the rest will happen.

    I enjoyed your commentary. I've seen all Frank's videos, and although I'm horrible at it, I know just enough piano to know that he is employing several tricks (techniques) that help him to "fake" his way through just about any song. It was great to hear you give names to some of those tricks.

    • @pasiltu1
      @pasiltu1 Před 5 měsíci

      That "faking" to me is years and years of musical theory and practise - basically mastering the art. You could similarly say a mathematician is "faking" his wayt through when he is able to create algorhitms to solve mathematical scenarios because he knows how math works - the theory and practical known solutions etc. Btw, my take is that music is what math would sound if it wasn't muted.

    • @kirke420
      @kirke420 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@pasiltu1 - To me, "faking" is like getting the right chord pattern or whatever, but not playing a song note for note as it was written.
      In your analogy, a mathematician could "fake it" by doing "back of the envelope" calculations on the fly.
      The word isn't negative. It takes skill to "fake" it.

      I prefer it faked. If you're always playing a song note for note, you're just playing the same exact thing every time and nothing interesting or artistical is added.@@kirke420

    the changes melody was wrong cause it goes down. from xxx , RIP , which happens a lot to him because when he gets rap requests , he assumes a lot haha. and sometimes they are legit just boucning off of two notes, and half of those beats are minor 2nds for trap so lol he does some crazy improvising in his head with those.
    Franks forumla lol which is basically most of piano playing?!
    Arpeggitating the harmony and once he gets bored of 16th notes , he spices it up with Triplets when hes's decesnging back down, and adds a big ocatave bass, when its home.
    Upper extensions sometimes in the melody & then he plays everything an octave higher at the end and than usually an ascending arrpegio to resolve home.
    he also uses the spider finger technique a lot .
    but his Tempo, and ryythm starting from the drums first is impeccable/ relative pitch I wanna see what all these "yt musicians" are going to do without omegele tho that kind of sucks.

    • @matticawood
      @matticawood  Před 6 měsíci +1

      That is a nice run down of exactly what he’s doing and what pretty much goes on in every musicians head when making it up…rap songs are always a difficult one to know exactly what to do with for a melody idea!

      I don’t play regularly with the piano at that height, it’s a trade off so that the camera can be angled to show the keys and both myself and the piano can be in shot…I’m too sure if there’s much I can do without either the keys not being visible or the camera being too high and looking unnatural 😊

      I make these with the exact opposite perspective…I think about those learning the piano and “up-play” what’s possible for them. Frank knows he’s a great player, he doesn’t need me to say it…but those that are learning the piano (more likely to be watching my video) might watch it and be inspired to learn the skill because it doesn’t feel impossible anymore 😊

    A bit of constructive criticism: Be a bit more positive and praising of the emotion he brings out in those reactions. Watch the video back and catch yourself immediately going it's not as impressive as it looks when he does something impressive. Music isn't a competition. Even when those guys had a big reaction you said it's because they're American.

    • @matticawood
      @matticawood  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I take your feedback 😊 I will say however, I break it down in that way because im aware that a viewer watching it that is learning the piano will be more encouraged knowing that it’s not out of reach for them and how he is doing it isn’t as difficult as it may appear. So it’s not that it isn’t impressive or that he doesn’t bring a lot of emotion to his playing, because he definitely does and he’s great. I just watch it with a learner in mind.
      Music definitely isn’t a competition and I wouldn’t and didn’t say anything negative about Franks ability or playing…just how he was doing it! 😊
      Also, the Americans in the video you refer to having a strong reaction…that’s not a bad thing! It was just an observation unrelated to what they were reacting to 😊 the reaction was a warranted one!

    Ya know, ordinarily when I see the word "reacts" in a video title, I'm filled with dread and thumbs down pretty quickly, because almost NEVER is it transformative content. I play piano. Your reaction is transformative. You are offering information that I understand as a musician that adds new information and education as your reaction. I really appreciate that and, most importantly, I think if the original creator (Frank) watched this video, he wouldn't strike it, because you are showcasing him, not recycling his original video. Thank you for that.

    • @SJActress

      Because your reaction was legitimate and not merely ripping off views from another creator (so much React content is just that) you've earned a Subscribe from me. This video is a primer on how to make "react" content transformative. It's something I hope DarkViperAU and hbomberman see. This is how "react" should work. Thank you again.

      Got what figured out? Playing by ear?
      Firstly, it isn’t a competition…music is subjective so he and I could play it very differently and that’s absolutely fine. Secondly, I wasn’t trying to “play it like him”. I clearly didn’t listen to any of the songs through (except for 10 seconds of the first one), if I intended to play a full version of the songs…then I would have listened to them through and made a different video.

      Explaining the process of playing by ear isn’t negativity. It’s letting others know that it’s possible for them too. Frank doesn’t need validation, he does this as a job…others however, need to know that they are able to do it with practice.
      You also have no idea how “good I am” (which is a ridiculous concept) or what I think of my own playing. 😬

    There have been British people who are blown away and some Americans who react to almost nothing. And one British girl on Billy Willkins channel who was crazy rude and arrogant and bigoted towards Americans and treated him horribly right off the bat and he’s like the nicest guy. Bigotry towards Americans seems pretty accepted and celebrated there more than really anywhere else. Brighton had a restaurant using hatred of Americans as a selling point, ironically it was an American diner style restaurant which very odd. There are actual enemies of America who seem less anti American than the British. I’ve seen it so much I immediately don’t trust someone if they’re British as I assume there’s a high likelihood they despise me and everyone I know as ‘ignorant Americans’’ as they so very often say. I don’t really attack them I just back out of the relationship slowly like I’ve encountered a panther on a trail.
    Yours is easily the most tame take on Americans. Usally with British people there are far more personal insults possible swearing and generally getting more emotional and angry at even the mention of Americans.
