The Salmo Hornet is molded from high-density form and is rounder than most shad baits, resulting in an aggressive, wobbling action and thumping vibration. The lure's small size appeals to a wide range of fish species.
    PRIMARY SPECIES
The miniature profile is ideal for trolling applications for walleyes, white bass , crappies and trout. 8 lb. mono or 10 lb. superline balances nicely with Light Action Spinning Gear or Casting Gear.
Walleye, White Bass, Crappies Trolling 8 lb. mono / 10 lb. braid, Spinning or Casting
The Hornet is extremely popular with open-water trollers who use internally-weighted leadcore line to troll a small-profile lure at precise depth levels. It is arguably the most popular open-water and basin-trolling lure for walleyes on Devils Lake, ND and nearby prairie waters. Rod tip action reflects the aggressive wobble of the lure when trolled at even modest speeds. 18 lb. leadcore with a 10-lb. fluorocarbon leader balances nicely with Light- to Moderate-Action, Leadcore Trolling Rods approximately 8 feet in length, placed in rod holders.

    SECONDARY SPECIES
The Salmo Hornet can be cast for Bass, Walleyes, Pike, White Bass, Crappies and Trout, using 6 lb. monofilament or 8 lb. superline to accommodate the lure's small size. While a durable and likely underrated light-tackle bass bait, it is primarily primarily considered by most anglers to be a multi-species trolling lure.

Here is another unbiased review from an angler with no affiliation to any tackle manufacturers. I found the Salmo lures to be very ineffective having fished them for most of the 2017 coarse fishing season on the river Thames. Out of 5 Salmo lures I tried, one of them has caught me a couple of fish, the other 4 have yet to attract any fish and they have had plenty of use. I also use other brands, Spro, Rapala, Manns, Mepps, Abu, E-Sox, Yo-Zuri etc and found them to be much better fish catchers. Based on my personal experience, the Salmo lures do not live up to the Salmo advertising claims.

Thanks Joss, just used my new Salmo hornet today for the first time and... not too impressed indeed. doesn't give me the feeling I get with a Spro Aruku or soft baits, also didnt catch jack and as soon as i changed it to an Ondex spinner I got me a 35cm perch. hope it will still come handy but besides cleaning the bottom of the lake from all kind of crap it didnt catch nothing..

They might be ok for Bass and Crappie, but they sure as hell are not much good for Pike and Perch. Still you have to try these things to see if they might work. On my latest test I found the Savage Gear 26g 3D Lipster Roach to fantastic. I have ordered a Westin 17cm Mike the Pike which I will try next week.

Joss Cues I have been using Mike the pike for a while now, top lure! One of my best catchers and got me my pb (109 cm)

My heavy lure rod only casts up to 50g, I might get another lure rod to fish the larger lures, it depends on the budget.

i've been using hornets ever since they came out in Poland, ca.1999 and at that time i was fishing river Sola (Oswiecim) twice a week, almost all year round. this river used to be full to brim with coarse fish (chub, dace, roach, bleak, barbel, nase), perch and an occasional pike and brown trout in the higher stretches. i was a big fan of rapala and Serbian 'ugly duckling' lures (the latter which were absolutely phenomenal, 1inch black gold catching every species in that river even gudgeon and minnows!), and i can tell you that Salmo hornets performance were abysmal. the fish would clearly be active and biting hard... throw a hornet 3F or 4F... nothing. Ever. I kept using them until around 2004 and by then i just didn't bother with them ever again. A few years ago i discovered a couple of trout lakes here in northern Scotland that are heaving with wild brown trout, and WOW, they could not ignore the H3F models more!
I'm pretty sure their poor performance is down to a far too aggressive vibration (the lure almost shakes its head more than its tail) and they dive head down too much. their vibration is inherently wrong and it seems like the fish are getting spooked by it.
