  • A demonstration on how to cut a stone in half using a hammer and chisle

Rather than putting the stone on bits of wood, where it bounces around, put it on a bag of sand. It sits more firmly and the impacts go more efficiently into the stone.

Thank you thank you thank you. I have the same stone as you are demonstrating. I didn't have a chisel like yours, so I used a railroad tie nail. Did as you demonstrated and had the same result as you. Amazing. Perfect fit into my project.

Thank you for this video. This looks more similar to my experience. All other videos using cheap thin bricks that split in a couple hits, meanwhile I had been scoring mine for a while and it still hadn't split.

Thanks. There's something quite raw and primitive cutting stone with tools. I recently had a go at cutting patio slabs. I did find that laying them on some builders sand on the patio a great way to stop any movement. But these were bigger slabs. My first two cuts went pear shaped and the split occured prematurely. Easier with straight line cuts. If you had a whole patio to do, a power tool would be better, but, it's great to practice with yours hands and bring out the stone masoner in you, skills that have probably been lost in this high tech world of ours. 😁😁😁

Depends on the face you need after the cut. Cutting the stone with a bade will give you a clean face. Splitting it this way will give you a split face on the cut side matching the front. If you have a couple to do this method is fine. If you have a bunch to do buy or rent a guillotine splitter
