      White countries really should have just let Japan have it. Washed our hands of it.
      The best thing that could have happened is if Japan took as far as India. Then we wouldn't be hearing about Indians crying about "British oppression".
      What did we get for that war? Well, if you're all about maintaining the territory of Empires (something I'm not exactly jazzed about, but whatever), well those territories were just cut loose anywhere from 5-20 years later anyway.
      If you were concerned about Chinese suffering - well western intervention almost certainly prolonged the suffering by lengthening the war. Had the west not intervened, Japan probably would have won in China by 1943, and the war would have gotten progressively less bloody as the limiting factor increasingly became logistics and not the Chinese armies.
      If you're concerned about the Japanese imperial hegemony - well, did the British controlling India give Britain access to India's manpower? No. No empire ever actually gets anything close to the full resources of a non-national region. It's "hollow". If Britain and France had full access to their Empires in the same was as their core territories, the "world wars" would have been walkovers. That imperial territories are hollow is something everyone knew as far back as 1913, and probably well before then.
      In fact, these empires ended up being vanity projects and consumed far more resources than they ever returned. It would have been far cheaper to just buy rubber and oil, and maybe hire a few Indian mercenaries if you're REALLY short on manpower, than to go to the expense to setting up a government and maintaining garrisons all over the place to put down revolts.
      This is something that European critiques of Asiatic regimes miss - in order for a regime in that area to harness any significant amount of resources, they must be brutal. Because they didn't have the technologies Europeans had, or some nice home territories they could dip into if things ever got rebellious in Burma. Because the king of Burma JUST has Burma. He can't call upon the resources of Holland - let alone the British isles - if people in Burma start getting uppity against him.
      How does the king of Burma set up garrisons and pay for troops? Well typically his rule was tightest around a particular area that was relatively wealthy and easier to control. Then he would slowly try to wrest real control on the territory he nominally owned. This may involve conflicts with those people and whatever organization they had, and then the rich countries that didn't have these problems would be like "ERMAHGERD SADDAM IS KILLING HIS OWN PEOPLE!!!111"
      Then the US invades Iraq and learns just what Saddam was dealing with and end up killing more people per year than Saddam did. And then it's like, without even trying and without any real plan to do so, you end up one day with the kill count hitting one million, and you think, "but I didn't try to kill anyone, I was just putting down these islamic revolts and trying to maintain basic infrastructure in a food insecure region." And then you're "the bad man" without even intending to.
      Don't think for a moment the US military wouldn't butcher anyone who decided they just didn't want to be part of that "DC Government".

      In my opinion places like Indonesia the Philippines or French Indochina were not colonized but occupied. The places that were the colonized were the former German territories in Asia and Oceania that were given to the Japanese after WW1 bcoz Japan was on the Allies side in WW1. Japan took over the former German possessions in Micronesia such as the Mariana islands and other islands and they took Taiwan and Korea in the late 19th and early 20th century. To be colonized in my opinion was to have a time of relative peace as well as an influx of Japanese settlers from Japan to the colonized territories. Places like the Philippines and Indonesia were occupied for a few years but not colonized

    The question is how did a country as massive as Indonesia is did a tiny country like Netherlands colonize it ?

    • @kambingbakar
      @kambingbakar Před 2 měsíci +1

      Indonesia was a collection of many smaller kingdoms/sultanates with their own agenda when the Dutch started colonising the archipelago. It was not until around early 20th century which by that time, the sense of nationality has begun to sprung up among the people of Indonesia especially among the intellectual which lead to desire of gaining independence as a nation. (Feel free to correct/discuss about this as I'm not good at explaining things and my history knowledge might be at blurred state)

Japan was the only country that tried to free Asia from the yoke of Western imperialism and racism. Japan was the only beacon of hope for the people oppressed by the Western imperialists.
