I thought maybe I found one similar to this. Before Maverick makes his last attempt with guns in the final battle he has 33 rounds remaining. The movie was made in 2019 but wasnt released until 2022. 2019 is 33 years after the original film. Could be a reach but maybe not.

All the flying scenes in the F-18s had Navy pilots with the actors in the backseat while it was made up to look like the front seat. They wouldn't let civilians fly the planes.

Penny is "Penny Benjamin, the Admirals daughter." She was an entry that Maverick had on his "rap sheet" for having "buzzed" with an aircraft. It was made note of by the carrier commander in the first movie, right before he gave them their "dream sheet" assignment at Top Gun. Yes, the ending scene is really Tom Cruise flying his own P-51 Mustang. He has a pilot's license.

That P-51 used in the movie actually belongs to Tom Cruise he did fly that one. As a civilian pilot he can fly something like the P-51 as well as other aircraft that he owns and he used to help the rest of the cast get ready for the 18. He just can't fly military aircraft. Since this movie the actor that played "Hangman" has also become a civilian pilot as well.

Only officers currently on active duty or reserve status who are qualified military aviators can control military aircraft. to do that they have to go through the military flight school pipelines (different schools for various aircraft) I went to first Pensacola and then to NAS Meridian during my time in flight school.

  • @TalkingHands308
    @TalkingHands308 Před rokem +3

The scene in the beginning when he's running on the treadmill is not to train for "g forces." That test flight actually shouldn't involve a lot of g-forces since he's more or less traveling in a straight line and a gradual turn. The purpose of that is because he will be flying at really high altitudes, and at high altitudes the atmospheric pressure is a lot lower. The suit he's wearing is pressurized but it can't be fully pressurized at ground level or else it will inflate like a balloon at high altitudes, so even inside the suit he's under much lower pressures. And with that he runs the risk of depressurization sickness, and that's where nitrogen in his blood turns into gaseous form in his blood. So in order to get rid of as much nitrogen as possible (and this is all in real life as well), high altitude pilots (like those who fly the U2 spy plane) will breathe pure oxygen for an hour or so prior to the flight and to help more of that oxygen absorb into his blood and tissue to expel more of the nitrogen from their system, high altitude pilots would often also exercise while breathing pure oxygen, which is what they were showing there. And to continue the attention to detail, you see him hold his breath after removing the face mask while they seal his suit and then pump the suit with pure oxygen as well, then when he's climbing into the cockpit, you see that Hondo has been carrying this box that is hooked up to his suit, that box is an air condition unit since it's very hot inside that sealed suit, so he doesn't get overheated on that walk to the aircraft. That's all real things that real high altitude pilots have to go through so it's cool that they put those details into the film.
Also the design of the aircraft was also done with the help of real engineers at Lockheed Martin, the real aircraft company behind famous aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, and I think also the U-2 but not 100% sure about that one. The movie went to that length to ensure that their fictional aircraft doesn't have any obviously incorrect design choices that would make it unflyable. Again, details only a minority of people would notice. You see the Lockheed Martin logo on the front of the joystick and the skunk logo on the tail and the rear of the joystick of that experimental aircraft. That skunk is the logo of "Skunk Works" which is the nickname given to Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Program that developed those aircraft I listed above.
More little details that I really like, in the catapult sequence you see him give the thumbs up, salute, then he holds a hold bar that's visible from the outside. That is to show to the shooter outside that his hand is definitely not touching the joystick because for that initial catapult sequence the controls are taken over by an automated system and the pilot cannot touch the joystick or they can interfere with that. So only after they verify that the pilot is holding onto that hold bar do they activate the catapult. The E-2 Controller they show at the mission scene (the woman inside the room lit by the red light inside the plane with the big disc on top of it) is the real deal. They initially wanted to hire her just to coach an actress in how to talk like one, but they ended up just using her in the actual movie and it shows because the way she speaks has a level of confidence and is so casual that can only really come from someone who does that on a day-to-day basis. Speaking of the E-2, that aircraft is known as a "mini-AWACS" and is the correct aircraft to be shown there since it's basically a carrier-capable version of the typical AWACS aircraft that's much larger and would have required an close by airfield to operate from.
The attention to detail in the movie is actually very commendable, although there were a few slip-ups, such as them saying the word "repeat" over the radio a few times. That's against military radio etiquette since "repeat" is used mainly for artillery to repeat fire on the last coordinates. So the rule of thumb is to never use that word since in the right (or I guess wrong) situation it could result in artillery being fired when it wasn't intended which could be very bad. The correct way to communicate over the radio that you want something repeated or that you are repeating a statement is to say "say again." So in this movie it should have been "Dagger One is hit! I say again, Dagger One is hit!" and "Dagger, you are not to engage, I say again, do not engage."

Talking Hands. I enjoyed your fun facts about the movie and military procedure, etiquette and life. As a former radio operator serving in an artillery unit, I especially appreciated your explanation why the word , "repeat" is not used in general military radio communication, except for artillery fire missions ( if specifically required in certain fire missions). I always groan/cringe when they say, "repeat" in movies involving military radio communication, instead of the proper phrase, "say again" or "I say again". Thank you for pointing it out.

The reason "Coyote" did not have a WSO in the back the way "Phoenix" did was due to the model he was made to look like he was flying. The F/A-18E is a single seat fighter while the F is a dual seated aircraft. "Coyote" was made to look like he was in a E model of the F/A-18 same as "Mavrick" "Rooster" and "Hangman" were made to look like they were piloting. All the actors and actresses did experience what it's like to be in the Hornet but it was all done from the WSO position of F/A-18F's.
Since none of the actors are neither officers or qualified naval aviators none of them actually flew the aircraft themselves and at this point are now past the minimum age to qualify even if they wanted (Have to be no older than 29 by flight school, first thing required before that is a commission)

I love the foreshadowing in this movie. In the "canyon run" training sequence when he's explaining all of the dangers, notice that the camera goes to the ones who will die for those reasons. For example, when he talks about flying over 100 feet would kill you, the camera shows Phoenix and Bob, who fails it when they pulled up to avoid Coyote. When Maverick talks about needing to keep a minimum speed, the camera goes to Payback and Fanboy, and they failed when they weren't able to stay on course when they were trying to fly fast enough to keep up with Hangman. When Maverick talks about needing to make it in a certain time so they can avoid enemy aircraft, the camera goes to Rooster and he fails because he took too long to complete the course. Also in the scene where Coyote, Phoenix, and Bob were to fly the 2nd part of the course, they show the birds being stirred up and flying off and Phoenix and Bob almost crash because of a bird strike.

As far as "Mavrick" goes he mentiones not getting fired again which says how his first time as an instructor went. "Iceman" went on to become the Commander of the Pacific Fleet which like the Commander of the Atlantic is one of the few 4 star Admiral positions which at the moment is the highest rank any Naval/Coast Guard officer can reach. There is a fleet Admiral rank on the books which is 5 stars but it is only used in a time of war and the last time the Navy had a 5 star was in WW2

32:08 - When you say it gives you the feeling "He's really flying." That is very true. That airplane actually belongs to Tom Cruise as his personal airplane. What you're seeing at the end is Tom Cruise taking Jennifer Connelly on her first time up in a plane like that. Here is her telling about it. czcams.com/video/EM2SmqGFTpo/video.html

As an Indian I particularly liked this "It's not the plane, it's the pilot", because even today USA can not digest that and Indian Mig21 shot down a Pakistani F-16. So by doing this they secretly accepted that Skill and sometimes exceed technology. 😊

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I'm glad the original actress didn't come back. Jennifer Connelly the way she looks now looks so much more beautiful than that other actress back then even... I honestly never understood how people found her attractive in the first Top Gun, lol. But anyway, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all of that so that's just my own opinion...

Maverick still blamed himself for what happened to Goose for this whole movie. Goose's death was not his fault. Goose died because he fucked up. There was something that Goose was supposed to do when he punched out in the original that he didn't do, and it cost him his life.

If you remember from the first film, Penny Benjamin was mentioned twice. First time when the Capt. of the Aircraft carrier was yelling at him "flybys over one admirals daughter and Goose said "Penny Benjamin"? Second time Goose's wife said "Goose told me about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin" So she was never seen in the first film but was mentioned.
