  • A stunning blasted moonscape is a good way to describe the natural beauty of Peru’s Nasca Desert. And that moonscape makes a particularly good place to test a fast and large adventure-touring motorcycle like the new 2017 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R.

    Terrific video. And love the amount of first person camera/commentary work - that's what really gives an impression of what a bikes like for the would-be-owner and rider. Hope the reviewer didn't suffer you much. But what's also terrific is the 1290R itself - and the amazing job ktm are doing in making real improvements year after year. Only downside where I am - UK - is the relative lack of dealers. Thanks again - great work!

    Nice review of a pretty sick motorcycle. Been grooving on these things since my brother in law brought home a 1090 R a few months ago. Glad you were able to catch your crash on video! I'm currently nursing a broken leg from as dirt bike crash a week and a half ago but my batteries were dead and cards full when it happened.

      Nope, it's 10 months later.... the tissue was actually liquified under the skin in the crash and it clotted and then had to be cut out about three weeks later... looked like a big gaping shark bite after the doctors were done. Now, it's healed-over with fresh skin but will still be a big dent and scar in my leg for the rest of my life.

    I'd like to see what the upcoming 790 vertical twin will do. That much weight on the dirt is a bit much and something like a GS is way too much for an old duffer like me, even though I'm 6' 2" and 185lbs. I'd rather not be trying to pick that monster out of a mud bog or creek crossing. I friend crashed his 1190 in Baja and broke his leg in the middle of nowhere. He's a tall dude and had a helluva time picking up his bike and getting to a doctor. Thankfully he made it. He previously rode his 950 ADV twice, end to end, on the Continental Divide. Looking forward to the 790ADV review. Get well soon.

    Sorry to see you got hurt ( but your comments were priceless). Just one question since Motorcyclist seams to be in the know......Why is KTM NOT importing the 1290 Super Adventure "S" ?? I would think they would sell SO much better than the "T", from which if the leftover 16s in my area are any indicator, not to good. I for one.. want one bad!!!

    SA(T) feels bigger and more top heavy becuase of the 30l tank and that's probably the only reason you would pick the T, if you need the extra range.

    • @AyoHues
      @AyoHues Před 7 lety +5

      There's a straightforward technique that's VERY easy to master to enable you to manage a tall seat height on any bike. I was taught it by a lady who's a little over 5ft tall and has finished the Dakar(!) but you can learn it at any dirt school. Basically involves sliding your bum cheek off the seat to get your foot down on one side and hooking your other leg over the seat where you were sitting. It's a lot simpler to show that explain and it takes seconds to learn it. I'm amazed this dirt technique isn't taught to all road riders as it's useful where there's negative camber etc

    Does anyone do a review on these bikes that just ride them on fire roads or graveled roads or maybe two up like the vast majority of us will be using them for. It makes an interesting video but I'd like to know how many people that buy this machine actually go blasting through single track in the forest or jumping off cliffs or climbing up steep rock walls. I guess I'd rather see a more real world review once in a while.

    The difference between this and the Multistrada enduro is so great, i wouldn't even consider the Ducati by a country mile. It seems wider, bulkier, and god that bike is ugly. This bike is GORGEOUS. And I'd trust KTM over Ducati's reliability any day. So many horror stories with Ducati, but when i was working at a KTM dealership, the customers never had anything but positive things to say and never had issues.

    • @SeanAlexanderJournalist
      @SeanAlexanderJournalist Před 7 lety +12

      No, the bike had absolutely NOTHING to do with my fall. There were two factors in the crash
      1.) Difficult lighting that hid the ledge from view until the very last instant.
      2.) A rider without enough dune experience to know not to ride into the unknown when the light is flat.
      I simply rode straight off a 15' vertical drop at about 16 mph. There wasn't any warning before the drop, the bike and I hit the bottom at almost a 90-degree angle and came to an instant dead stop. The same thing would have happened on any other bike, even the lightest two-stroke.
