  • It can be hard to decide what the best paddling tops are. While you can probably get away with whatever is in your closet, there are some things you should consider when dressing and choosing the best clothing for kayaking and canoeing, which is what we're covering in this video.

I agree with you about the jacket with the neoprene neck; I also feel most comfortable in them. When you close it nicely (my Peak UK anorak is adjustable) hardly any water comes in, not even when rolling.
I like the blue shirt you wear, never saw it before.
As always, thanks for the video!

Nice, glad to hear you found a solution that's comfortable but still doesn't let any water in, that's great! Thanks for the comment :)

For hot, sunny weather it's hard to beat a sun hoody. They're cool, comfortable and give total sun protection to the neck, ears and side of the face, and usually have extra-long sleeves with thumb holes to protect the backs of your hands. Wear one over a baseball cap and you hardly need sunscreen at all. Lots of companies make them. My favorite is a Patagonia.

The second jacket seems to be the Orion, not the Riptide jacket. Riptide has only neoprene wrists and a different collar design. At least that's what I read in all descriptions (I bought a Riptide Splash jacket and expect its delivery this week). Best wishes from Tyrol.

For fall or spring canoeing I love my nrs terreprene rashguard, I'll line it with a polartec grid hoodie and cover with a fitted softshell when necessary. A lot of people go with the dry suit in the canoe too but I haven't needed to yet.

Great presentation! It would be super if you follow up with a video on your views on using a full dry suit, splash suit etc, i.e. not only the top. Pros and cons? Your preferences?
    Tx for sharing your knowledge!

I've been known to wear chest waders to stop wet butt before I went and pulled the trigger on a full dry suit due to price... Yep, it wasn't ideal but maximized with tops & belts to keep water from opening up chest and dragging me to the bottom...
