  • How is AI affecting the textile design world? Is it still worth making repeating patterns? Let's talk about these and other burning questions about AI in surface design. This video was filmed in June 2023. Sharing my personal experience and tips as a long-time traditional and digital artist and textile designer as well as some insider expert opinions.

Selling on POD platforms isn't the only option to make it in textile design! Learn more in my Skillshare class: skl.sh/3uTdIgF

And you are right. On Etsy they are selling "watercolors" designs that are in fact AI generated. I would classify them as incompetents with cheating abilities.

I just started teaching myself pattern design a few months ago....when I found out about it I was so excited and thought this could be my future, but after considering AI and its future growth I've only become more and more discouraged. Is it even worth putting my time and energy towards anymore? I'm really starting to doubt it

Unfortunately, there is no way to know the future. I'd say, if you love doing it, keep going. Trust me, it was difficult enough to make it in the industry even before AI. It shouldn't be the deciding factor.

AI kills creativity in humans. I always believed that robots will do hard work in difficult conditions (e.g. underwater, desert, fire etc) and help people to survive. Instead AI is making music, poetry and painting substituting in fact human characteristics. People should learn languages, software and art to develop their brain and inner self not to go to self-sufficiency and superficiality by using some AI generating apps. I admire the new technologies and everything that comes with them (e.g. computer science) but this is a very bad approach to humanity itself. I feel it as a bad energy whatever anyone else believes. People should LEARN and CREATE not to behave as stupid monkeys (Nota bene: monkeys are even more originals and better in this aspect) by typing some text and claiming to have any talents.

Totally agree with you 👏🏼👏🏼 Do you think there's a change it all can go in the opposite direction and actual watercolors will become more valuable?

@@PatternTalentbyDaryaKarenski I do not know what the future will hold, but I feel it as an unleashed darkness. I would ban it or limit it to specific sites. This is only promoting incompetence in a world with so many other unsolved issues like peace, climate change, proper disease management and so on. In art I would value more true human talent, creativity and originality instead of AI variations of existing artworks.

@@AdinaD-to4yt I agree with you. But unfortunately, not everybody has high morals... Just like the huge problems that you mentioned - still haven't been resolved till this day because the powerful ones have concerns of their own.

Best use new tech as a tool and not with the goal to have a finished thing .Stay creative.

What is your forecast on the future of AI in surface pattern design?

What I don’t understand is how can ai seperate layers for screens for print production in an illustrator or psd file etc & re-scale for a buyers ever changing mind? (This is coming from 15 years employed in Fashion Industry as an Apparel, Print & Graphic Designer)
All i see is ai created photographic flat work which only works in digital or sublimation print.
Ai is stolen & not original. It can’t replace a human inputting.
I am worried but also thinking it’s BS.

      @PatternTalentbyDaryaKarenski  Před 5 měsíci

I don't think it can at the moment! I think while there are areas where ai might take over, there will always be other areas where the human eye is crucial.

If one is conformist and accepts what AI offers with a simple prompt, what it does is fill the market with images that few are going to buy, but if one uses AI as a tool dedicated to getting ideas and sketches so that later the expert gives it his special touch, then he will maintain his market correctly, no one sells 100,000 images generated with AI neither at a high price nor at a low price, people know that those images are not correct, maybe 10% but who looks at 100,000 images to take only 10,000? It's crazy to even think about it. What's more, and I say this from experience, when you make a design you use specific measurements for each detail that will make up the pattern, with AI trying to do so is a total failure, so until you are able to understand that I want a 4cm goldfish head and apples 5 cm in diameter, the designer's work is safe. And even if we teach it what we want it to get, the measurements are where it will fail, and some will say that it can be drawn by hand and the AI does the rest, but it still fails and if you are serious, you will not use it to sell, for Luckily, manufacturers know what they want and are not convinced by any design, even if it is generated by AI or the best designer in the world, quality above all.

I, too, am hopeful that the nuances only a trained, real, human designer sees will remain our benefit in the future! Thank you for your comment.

Yes mama. Move to another sector, now! I say NOW!
    Find something else!
(Learn coding and learn how to use AI immediately)
Learn HTML, then a little CSS, then learn Svelte, then Tailwind, then Sveltekit, then learn Langchain and you're good to go. Either you do it now, or it's too late. It's high time. It's time. Wake up and move!

Thank you for talking about this. I spent the last 26 years becoming a surface pattern designer and I am using ai and I can’t believe it and I’m so worried about where we are headed. We need to keep this discussion open and figure out how to navigate. I think the designs for the most part need work if you are looking for a specific outcome.

Just think about the people who went to only art schools, and don’t have any other skills to survive 😢
