Everyone loves to be pretentious about DF's UI but it's geniunely awful. The game would be 100x more popular if the dev had actually given a shit about usability.
Here's a thing, I love the depth and freedom of dwarf fortress, so a few years ago I wanted to get into it with all this software that made it more accessible. It didn't last for very long. After another year or two I came back again, this time just wanting to get used to it completely vanilla for some reason. And I actually got used to it just fine. What I did is that I had a DF Wiki opened up in my tablet to help me out with information and then I started to recognize the ASCII sprites like second nature. And I had a blast, the immersion and simulation is just so satisfying that the simple controls and UI didn't matter to me at all after a while.
With that being said, I think if you have some patience and really like sandbox gameplay, then nothing beats DF, hands down. But most of the people don't have that, they just get frustrated quickly (can't blame them though). I also think it's simple visual nature allowed the development of the simulation to get so deep anyways, so I think that's good. And what's even better, like Playasum already mentioned, you can use user made software to help you visualize the game more easily.
Though one thing I hate is that when you stop playing for some period and come back, it feels a little sloppy again and takes time to get back into it.
I thought i was taking crazy pills in not liking Dwarf fortress for its U.I.
I think they will be aiming to improve it a bit later on, but no doubt it's not easy to get into. I find the biggest issue to be having to use keys only. If there was mouse input supported, damn, that'd be sweet. Don't really mind ASCII.
The dev of DF himself said multiple times his UI was completely awful and made no sense but it's probably a ton of work to change it
This is a fun little title, that has a lot of promise. I'm looking forward to it being finished. If you start a new game with Advanced, you can change some of the map settings, and choose where you start. You will be able to see all of the biomes (from forest to tundra to caves to even waste). You can turn off the vision fog in settings if you want, though some people would consider that cheating.
As a fan of dwarf fortress and rimworld, I am definitely gonna buy this. I hope this game makes it and doesn't die!
As a fan of those games I am not going to buy this game. Because I'm not a dummy who buys anything that reminds me of something I already like. Enjoy the next few Star Wars movies. They are your fault.

What do you mean Rimworld Meets Dwarf Fortress? It's like saying "A 90% water alcohol solution meets a 20% water alcohol solution". It's the same damn thing, only one is much more pure. It would be more appropriate to say "Little bit less casualized Rimworld", or "Another futile attempt to add graphics to DF, only this time slightly better than others"
Well, it sure is prettier than Gnomoria. Art style reminds me of FFT and early PS2 JRPGs.

This reminds me so much of Gnomoria, a game I have so much affection for, for which have never quite found a substitute.

You had me at "Dwarf!" I was kind of skeptical when you were talking about the graphics, the sprites on the 3D background and all...But then the SECOND the game actually started up, I got slapped in the face with just this sort of...nostalgic feeling. It really does nail down that old PS2 RPG look with the sprites, and how everything is just *ever-so-slightly* pixelated, even the menu and UI bits...I dunno, man. It just really does it, you know?
The game itself is also pretty neat. It gives that nice, casual town-building feeling. I like it!
And, of course, everything is especially Dwarfy! Makes it instantly 100x better! Dwarf Love, Best Love!
Ain't nobody like them weaklin' dagger-ears! Too busy hugging trees and laying with woodland creatures to do anything worthwhile! Give me a Bearded, Battleaxe totin' Brother over one of those *things* any day!

Reminds me more of Towns tbh, just with a fantasy premise. Granted towns has that premise too, in a way, but the whole
"splicing/splitting" grid like map that you can go up n down levels is very much Towns like.
If this had the same depth as Dwarf Fortress, it would be amazing. I really like the art style and the camera freedom.
There is not another game in the world that has the depth that Dwarf Fortress has. It is simply unfair to any other game to say "I wish it had the depth of DF." To be fair, DF was created by a madman/mathematician.
This game makes dwarf fortress seem like the coolest game in comparison to this.
Have you seen the Octopath Traveler demo for the Nintendo Switch? It has a super nice sprite with high res texture art style.

This looks like a cross between Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress.
i think i might like this alot more than HearthStone. Those 2d sprites in the 3d world are very aesthetically pleasing.
Of course, i would prefer if you play it Splat. I find myself enjoying watching your videos more than playing the games myself.

From what I can gather the game went into a sort of development hell where it took ages to address any of it issues, and hasn't come close to Rimworld let alone Dwarf Fortress when it comes to complex simulation or management.
