Neraidochori | The fairytale village at an altitude of 1,140 m. on the slopes of Koziakas
Neraidohori Trikala is built at an altitude of 1,140 meters on the slopes of Koziakas and is one of the most mountainous settlements of the Pyli Mountains. Administratively, it belongs to the municipal unit of Ethikon of the Municipality of Pyli of the regional unit of Trikala.
Its houses with red roofs are spread out amphitheatrically on the hillside gazing at the peaks of the mountains that surround the village. Old churches and stone fountains with flowing crystal water adorn its various corners. Its population is 320 inhabitants and it is 52 km from Trikala, 44 km from Kalambaka and 10 km from the Ski Center of Pertouli.
The beautiful village stands out among the plane trees, while arriving at its grounds you are greeted by a wonderful cobbled square, which is a meeting point in the village. From there you can admire the restored church of Agios Nikolaos of Veternik, which was saved from the invasion of the Turkalvans in 1823, thus acquiring historical importance.
History
Neraidohori is the birthplace of Christodoulos Hadjipetros, chieftain of Pindos and member of the Friendly Society. The first name of the village was Veternik from the Slavic word "vetronik" which means the place with the fairies. Until 1978 it was called Hatzipetrio in honor of the local hero. Also, in the past, trade flourished in the village, especially wool trade due to the large number of herds that were reared in the area.
Folk tradition
The Fairy Village of which reminds us of a fairy tale is no accident because according to a legend, two very beautiful and rich girls, Maro and Neraidoula, once lived in the village. One day thieves invaded the village and tried to grab the girls who managed to escape by climbing one on the top of one mountain and the other on the top of another. When the thieves left the girls did not return to the village but disappeared forever.
The old men and women told that many times on moonlit nights they saw the shadows of the girls wandering the slopes while on dark nights they heard their sad voices. Since then the two mountains were named Marosa and Neraida and the village Neraidochori.
