Let me tell you that we used to watch all of Maradona's videos in high school and try to emulate his control and the juggling training he would do. It's unbelievable. No matter how much we tried we just couldn't get it down. No one has ever had the control over the ball like Maradona. Not even Ronaldinho, Zidane or Messi. Until you actually try some of the things he would do with absolute ease you don't truly realize how difficult it is to do these things like that. I hope history never forgets him when it comes to this sport. He was a master. One of a kind.

That vid doesn't even do him justice. He did play in the World Cup guys, 3 times and in 2 finals. He won it (virtually single handed in 1986) including the best ever World Cup goal against England. In terms of control over the ball, Ronaldinho was the closest. I'm mad at Ronaldinho for being lazy which is why he underperformed his potential. But there is no questioning his love of the game and of the people. For that, he's also one of the most beloved players ever.

He didn't play in '78 WC. He won the 88-89 Europa League. Played Champions 87-88 (lost vs Real Madrid, great team) and 90-91 (lost with Spartak which later on would eliminate Real Madrid) with a very discreet performance.
Zinedene Zidane is right up there as well. He's a big guy but an absolute joy to watch. I think graceful might be the best word. He had a huge bag of tricks but would just do the right thing in every moment, almost minimalist in a way. From memory I can't recall him ever being successfully tackled. Fouled? Yes. Someone taking the ball from him though? Once in a blue moon maybe.
pele was an a once in a lifetime athletic specimen and he was well rounded he could do everything, maradona was an artist, and if he trained like he should instead of constantly partying drinking snorting smoking etc, who knows what could he achieved but on the other hand that crazy personality made him who he was so.

Also worth noting that he played in an era when defenders regularly tried to break his legs - players now are - rightly - protected much more by referees, but back in his day, you got the legs kicked off you. Modern players would struggle to cope. I've been playing and following soccer for more decades than i care to remember, and, for me, 4 players are head and shoulders above the rest, and they are, in chronological order: Garrincha, George Best, Cruyff, and Maradona.

Having the best individual performance in a WC (1986) ever, scoring the best goal in all time and the most polemic goal in the same game vs England, almost single handling winning that WC, he played 4 WC representing Argentina (1982-1986-1990-1994).
If you have a way to describe Maradona's ability it would be as a combination of Ronaldinho and Messi before they even played, he had godlike ball control and dribbling, awesome technique, creativity, passion and speed, in the clips you saw him warm up with Napoli and juggling the ball, he doesn't even have the shoelaces tied!
He also was one of the pioneers of freestyle and tricks & skills, almost unmatchable to this time and only rivaled by Ronaldinho in this field.

He had everything, sublime ball control, speed, strength, vision, decision making, passing, scoring, free kicks, the lot. He was natural born leader and a fantastic character. Messi is a wonderful player too, but he did not play on the poor pitches and in the tough tackling of that era. Maradonna was the best, the God of Football.

In terms of control over the ball, Ronaldinho was the closest. I'm mad at Ronaldinho for being lazy which is why he underperformed his potential. But there is no questioning his love of the game and of the people. For that, he's also one of the most beloved players ever.

He didn't play in '78 WC. He won the 88-89 Europa League. Played Champions 87-88 (lost vs Real Madrid, great team) and 90-91 (lost with Spartak which later on would eliminate Real Madrid) with a very discreet performance.

Zinedene Zidane is right up there as well. He's a big guy but an absolute joy to watch. I think graceful might be the best word. He had a huge bag of tricks but would just do the right thing in every moment, almost minimalist in a way. From memory I can't recall him ever being successfully tackled. Fouled? Yes. Someone taking the ball from him though? Once in a blue moon maybe.
pele was an a once in a lifetime athletic specimen and he was well rounded he could do everything, maradona was an artist, and if he trained like he should instead of constantly partying drinking snorting smoking etc, who knows what could he achieved but on the other hand that crazy personality made him who he was so.

Maradona is the GOAT, there's been some great players but he's the best. You should watch highlights of his performances in the 1986 world Cup, just ridiculous, like an OP playstation character in every game.
Also worth noting that he played in an era when defenders regularly tried to break his legs - players now are - rightly - protected much more by referees, but back in his day, you got the legs kicked off you. Modern players would struggle to cope. I've been playing and following soccer for more decades than i care to remember, and, for me, 4 players are head and shoulders above the rest, and they are, in chronological order: Garrincha, George Best, Cruyff, and Maradona.
