  • Having used the KASE Wolverine Magnetic Filters in the past, I was very impressed with them, so much so that I made a video about just how good I thought they were.
    I felt that there was just one thing missing and it seems now that this has been added to the latest system. the Revolution Magnetic System, so, of course, had to make a video about that too :-)

    Hi Darren, I absolutely agree, the KW revolution filters are fantastic. You know, I also made already a video about them, where I came to the conclusion that it is not only the glass quality, which is really phenomenal for Kase filters in general, it is especially the usability. They simply listen to their clients. The colour coding, for instance, saves so much time, I would not like to miss that anymore. Also, the innovation is top with the inlaid adapter ring, magnetic lens hood, magnetic step-up-rings, and magnetic lens cap.
    Thanks for the video, buddy!
    Nice greetings,
    Christian

    I have to say I am getting more tempted by this Kase system. I can't remember the last time I had to use a grad so moving to a purely circular system seems the way forward.

    I got tempted by the proliferation of magnet filters that have come to the market in recent years and bought these Kase filters about 9 months ago. Whilst I like the convenience of the magnet and stackable ND's I've not been impressed with the performance of the CPL in this kit. It just doesn't polarise anywhere near as well as my previous screw-in B+W Kaseman CPL which I used for years. I also find rotating the magnetic CPL just awkward compared to the traditional rotating mounts. It's also flimsy, and I put mine in a pocket temporarily on a shoot recently, sat down and unfortunately it cracked and splintered. Not sure whether to replace it or go back replace it with the traditional screw-in type.

    • @DarrenJSpoonley
      @DarrenJSpoonley  Před 2 měsíci

      I’ve not had an issue with my polariser to be honest, I recently had an opportunity to compare to another brand while in the field and the Kase performed better! I wonder if the one you have had a flaw perhaps?

    Nice little demo buddy, looks like a very easy system to get to grips with. I think I would miss my grads for long exposures though (I'm not going to bracket a couple of 4 minute exposures 😂) but then I think I'm the exception. I certainly would consider them on less 'dynamically challenged' days though as it would definitely speed up my process. Enjoy the rest of the week D 🙏🙏🙏

    I'm not a photographer, but my partner is. I've been researching filters for about a week now and have settled on Kase! Thanks for the great video!
    I am torn between this set and the set with square holder to use graduated ND filters. Would you say most photographers do this in post processing? I think the ability to use a lens hood would be nice, and since we often hike, it may be nice to have less things to mess around with. Any advice would be appreciated :)

    • @DarrenJSpoonley
      @DarrenJSpoonley  Před rokem +1

      Thank you very much ! Drop in filters are the ones I’ve used previously however they need mounting adaptors which means more to carry and more time to setup before shooting, Kase magnetic are simple and very handy ! Shots can be bracketed if needed but depending on how high the difference between dark and bright are in a scene it may not even be needed TK do to get the shot

    • @DarrenJSpoonley

      @@DarrenJSpoonley I got some Lee filters I have had for a very loooong time and I was looking to get a new one, and then I found out almost no one here in Norway sells Lee any more. Asked the store that used too have them and they said Lee was on the way out for them as no one bought them because of magnetic filters.

    Hi Darren, this looks good and is possibly inspired (aka close copy) of Maven magnetic system. How good do you find the magnetic performance? Is there any objective way to test and compare this? I have only ever seen subjective comments re magnetic performance, but many positive reviews are from those receiving 'free' samples (esp Neweer on Amazon). I have been researching the many different magnetic filter types/brands (eg K&F, Neweer, Freewell etc) available and suspect a common problem is weak/inferior magnets that also degrade over time, leading to filters dropping off (or knocked off) risking loss or damage.
    Optical quality in many of better systems looks pretty good and possibly isn't a meaningful discriminator. Also for video application how good, or otherwise, VNDs performed (colour bias, variation over density, X-pattern etc). I have used Polar Pro screw-on VNDs (well regarded) and found them great in convenience terms (once screwed on) but less accurate that true fixed NDs (true for all VNDs). So eventually concluded (perhaps no surprise) that everything is a compromise and perfection just doesn't exist in filters. Trade offs being cost, optical quality, convenience, robustness, size, heft, weight, limited range etc. I will use a matte box and large cinema size (4x5.65) fixed NDs for videography, when I'm seriously looking for quality - but that's not suited to quick, casual use, gimbal application, or really relevant to stills photography.
    Maven filters came well regarded/reviewed in respect of magnetic performance so I just bought a Maven set, but had considered Kase too. Also Polar Pro's Helix Maglock system. Helix was possibly the most robust, but very expensive, bulky, heavy and limited to just 82mm. So, Helix effectively dismissed on both ergonomic and economic grounds although speed of change and security of lock were def plus points. Maven seem a lot lighter and possibly also have good hold and a lifetime warranty (albeit one never knows how good any warranty is until tested).
    What have others done in seeking their own 'optimum' trade offs re filters?

    • @DarrenJSpoonley
      @DarrenJSpoonley  Před 9 měsíci

      I’ve used the original kase Wolverine magnetic and found them to be very good, however what was lacking was a way to see which was which in the pouch, I did recommend some colour to help identify them which I then saw in the Mavin filters ! I’ve not used those I’m afraid so can’t comment however what I can tell you is this latest version from kase is very good and the magnets are quite strong, I’ve had comments and messages from people saying they were actually too strong !
      Hope that helps
