  • According to the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, by February this year, a total arrear debt owed to Eskom by municipalities has escalated to R78 billion.
To help us make sense of the state of electricity and energy capabilities in our country, this morning we are joined by SABC News Specialists Researcher, Velemseni Mthiyane.

I do agree i think we need more nuclear power, as far as danger is concerned, it has been safe after all this time, so i dont see what the problem is. Thank you 😮

Howmuch cost in the electricity tariffs did renewables add?

It's official, on-shore wind energy is BY FAR the cheapest form of energy generation (including battery storage). On average an on-shore wind turbine generates 2.5 - 3 MW of energy, and an off-shore wind turbine around 3.6 MW of energy. SA could deploy around 695 offshore wind turbines (near Durbs, PE & CoCT) alone for 2'500 MW energy. Around 895 on shore wind turbines (to supply inland energy demand eg Joburg) to create a further 2'500 MW of capacity. Around 1'590 wind turbines could supply around 40% of SA's energy needs.
Wind turbines can be deployed withing a couple of years whereas nuclear can take decades and there are ALWAYS budget blowouts with construction costs escalating significantly over the years. Also, our gov can't build coal powered stations that work properly, but everyone is quite happy for them to build a nuclear power station... what could possibly go wrong?! Also, wind & solar will create WAY MORE jobs than a nuclear plant.
SA, like Oz, has excellent solar potential, especially in cities where the vast majority of people live (rooftop solar + community batteries). And the potential for V2G tech to provide power during peak demand is also a possibility.
There's also geothermal energy. Geothermal hotspots occur near CoCT, PE, Durbs awa relatively near Joburg, our largest urban centers. Several nextgen geothermal energy tech is available. Geothermal plant lifespan are also much longer than a nuclear power plant!

Ai, there is a lot of cobfusion about this load shedding and load reduction and why electricity tariffs are increasing so much. I think there is just no transparency in this whole thing.
