Interstellar and Arrival my favorite sci-fi space movies over the last 10 years
My two favorites of all time, actually. They share the quality of using “sci-fi” to tell a profoundly, deeply, richly human story with non-gimmicky plot twists. Both movies also assume a significant amount of intelligence from their audiences. Another shared trait from both Nolan & Villeneuve, my two favorite directors.
I really hope she watches DUNE on the channel soon! Beautiful film also by this same director.

@@suddenimpulse030 Dune is a great film, but if a viewer has zero familiarity with the material, Dune is a confusing mess and the viewer will need a lot of post-explanation to understand WTF they just watched.
@@dondumitru7093I dunno. I have seen first time viewers with no exposure to the books follow along just fine. Stefs pretty smart and observant, I am sure she’d do fine. Plus it is a fantastic movie and she could do it to coincide with the release of Part 2.
Yeah everyone cries at the end of the movie or they force themselves not to cry. Incredible movie and one of the best twists in movie history. Hidden Gem!!!

One of the finest movies of this decade. Amy Adams can act more in a facial expression than most people can do with a page full of dialogue.
The General's wife’s last words are “In war there are no winners, only widows.”
Yet another insipid line from this insipid movie.

I'm so glad you liked this most impactful film. A second watch is so incredible because more than just the story reveals itself... a set of feelings begins to happen that you don't even realize are possible on first viewing. 'Arrival' is one of may favorites of all-time. Great reaction!

Interesting fact - the Mandarin spoken as the wife's dying words werent translated in the film but were "In war, there are no winners, only widows" a rather poignant message against conflict and i think the filmmakers chose to leave it untranslated for the mystery but revealed that detail at a Q&A later. Kangeroo wouldve been great hahaha

“Non-zero sum game” is the moment that was designed to be the big twist (if you want to call it that). She hears Ian use the term at the camp, after having seen the future moment with her daughter asking for the term. That queues her to respond to Hannah at just the right moment because she has accessed it in the present. Seems like relatively few people catch that when it happens on their first time watching and it’s fascinating to me to watch different reactions and when people realize the “twist”. I remember being absolutely floored during that scene. What an absolutely stunning film this is.
I agree, the "non-zero sum game" scene is the major reveal that unusual causality is happening. Also, we get the intro narration with "We are so bound by time." and the scene with Ian asking about the theory that thinking in a language rewires your brain, at which point the most astute viewers are hyper-vigilant looking for time travel or strange ordering of events.
I think I've seen a single reactor who suggested well-ahead of time, before the scene with Ian asking about rewiring the brain, that Louise's recollections of Hannah were actually from the future.
The moment for me was "Who is this child?" I remember actually catching my breath and thinking "Oh my God, it hasn't happened yet." I really wish I had seen this in the theater.

Relatively few people catch it, because it's not conclusive.
Even if you're clued into the fact that timey-wimey stuff is happening, it's just as easy, or maybe easier, to think that the moment with Hannah is still the past, not the future, and that this power is being applied retroactively, that she has always had these moments where she see what's going to happen though maybe it's not fully conscious. Or you may think it's just deceptive editing designed to obfuscate some other incoming twist or what have you.
I think " "Who is this child?" is fare more conclusive than "Non-zero sum game” . With latter you can't really deduce that she doesn't know that term at that point.
Definitely an underrated film. I left the theater with my mind reeling.

Yeah sorry dude, this is pretty broadly considered to be top 5 best sci-fi of the last 10+ years.
It's definitely not underrated, but it's perhaps less well--known than it deserves to be.

My top 3 sci fi ever: Contact, Interstellar and Arrival.... humanity best qualities portrayed perfectly
the beach scene on Contact... my father promise me on Interstellar ... the daughter scenes on Arrival, just perfect
Ugh, all 3 of those are fantastic. Contact often gets criticized for being schmaltzy, but I don't care. It's so earnest and thought provoking. And Jody Foster's '90s career was incredible.
Contact and Interstellar are beyond amazing. Arrival is a bit slow but definitely worth a watch

I recommend The Man From Earth. I promise it's not like any sci-fi movie you've ever seen--no CGI, no elaborate sets, no costumes, nothing--its a movie that takes place in a single room of a man telling his friends different stories throughout history. It's just as thought provoking as Arrival and honestly better acted.
Abbot and Costello, whose comedic routine is based on misunderstanding words.
I cannot speak highly enough of this film. it is definitely one of the best films I’ve ever seen and has a really interesting approach to time and alien genre films.
Me too... and I've watched hundreds, if not thousands of films over my time on earth. No film makes me cry like this one, it hits me at multiple parts too. Beautiful yet heartbreaking.
I think reaction videos are better when the person reacting hasn't previewed the film through trailers or reviews. We get a better shot at your emotions when it's fresh to you. And yeah, this is a really good film. I was honestly wierded out a bit when we were first introduced to the shell and the aliens. It's fear of "the other."
And most previews spoil like 50-75% of the movie anyway.
'I used to think this was the beginning of your story.' It's pretty cool that the first line of the movie gives away the plot.
But you know that only after you have watched and understood the movie 🤘🏻
Its only a good twist if you could have predicted it but didn't.
This movie is not only fantastic when you see it, but it's REALLY good on the rewatch when you know what's going on.

The other thing to think about is that the Heotapods knew every Earth language long before coming to the planet.
They also always knew about the bomb and that Abbott would be killed.
Now THAT'S hardcore. To really REALLY put mission first- knowing with absolute certainty that you're going to your death to help humanity and in the extreme long road, for humanity to help your species.
It's a special movie.
Yup, when Louise enters the shell, Abbott and Costello are like, "Whelp, they've finally brought Louise in at least, holy cow these people are slow. But then, we already knew they were slow, didn't we?" and then Abbott offers "I'm not really in that much of a hurry, to be honest."

The first of Denis Villenueve's trifecta of three perfect sci-fi films in a row: "Arrival", "Blade Runner 2049" and "Dune: Part 1" - which will be a grand slam when "Dune: Part 2" comes out in March. One of the greatest sci-fi films of all-time. Great reaction.
This movie is soooooo trippy and I LOVE it!
My fave Denis Villeneuve movie, Dune is also amazing but this one is a gem fosho. The 'timeline trap' he lays out at the beginning with the daughter 'flashback' is pure genius

Ok, I’m so glad you explained at the end, because I was waiting to hear your reaction when she asks the alien who the little girl is. Sometimes I feel you could share more of what you’re thinking, even if it’s wrong, because we’re all curious to know where you are at. It’s part of our journey, as we follow your journey, if that makes sense.

This is such a brilliant, epic film. One of my all-time favorites. NEVER fails to move me. It plays perfectly with our biases (regarding time) and our assumptions.
The amazing thing is that Hannah's rare disease is probably caused by her mom and dad's interaction with the aliens and/or their technology.. They showed her the future and she could make her choice. Having seen and known what it was like to interact with Hannah, she came to accept the inevitable pain to experience the joy and make her life as good as it could be. So "ARRIVAL" was about both the aliens, but also welcoming Hannah... AND a new way of thinking. Such a beautiful, remarkable tale. Since you loved that one... a few others that will touch you like this: "CHILDREN OF MEN" (brilliant dystopian tale), "GRAVITY" (astounding space film), and "STRANGER THAN FICTION" (magical, smaller film about love and life). Happy Holidays!
Oh man. No one ever talks about Stranger than Fiction but it's absolutely worth the watch.

So many details in this film… the big window at her house where she later sees Ian looks a lot like the window when she saw the aliens, or the same song playing at the start and end of the movie! INCREDIBLE!!
I think the movie kind of implies (and the story it is based on makes clear) that the future is fixed, just as the past in our memory cannot be changed. Louise ‘remembers’ the future throughout the movie as her skill in reading Heptapod grows. By the time she is fluent, and she ‘remembers’ everything, she accepts the future and Hannah as they must be. One big theme here, that Louise learns, is that Hannah’s ‘Arrival’, and her life, is more important than her eventual departure. To me, it is very sweet and moving.
I lost my mom many years ago, and I cannot go back and change things, the good and the bad. And I wouldn’t really want to change everything that has made me what I am; there’s kind of an obligation to accept it, the people in life, and grow.
I read Rendezvous with Rama b/c it was prized on my moms bookshelf. Its one of the reasons I became a Biochemist instead of a Chemist. In that book series... its essential to see how biology can cross into tech via chemistry. If push came to shove... could/would they sent me?!
It hits you exactly where it feels the most. The sign of a great story.

Great movie and great reaction. If you really like scifi which doesn't spoon feed you and really makes you think, try Annihilation. Natalie Portman is unlike I have ever seen her. Word of caution, it asks way more questions than it answers and can be very trippy so using a notebook could be helpful, aspects of the movie can be so unfamiliar as to be very disconcerting to some, and the premise is not as uplifting as with Arrival; the joy for me was really having a movie address topics which not many others do. If you're up for the challenge it's an incredible movie as good as Arrival but in a totally different way. And if you like the director of Arrival (Villeneuve) then his other scifi is extraordinary; Dune and Blade Runner 2049 but I highly recommend watching the first Blade Runner ("The Final Cut" version) beforehand.

Annihilation is great but it's more cosmic horror than scifi imo.
@@j.f.fisher5318 I absolutely agree about the cosmic horror and to your allusion I don't think they are mutually exclusive. I didn't mention it that way because those who don't know, get the wrong impression of what that genre is. It's rarely horror as most would experience traditional horror. Ad Astra is a perfect example. Regardless if we think it's a good or bad movie, that very much marries scifi and cosmic horror.
Arrival : One of the most beautiful, sad and at the same time hopeful movies I have ever seen. ♥
This movie is probably the one Christopher Nolan would regret not having done himself, considering his obsession with time in all his movies.

Great reaction Stef like always, i love this movie its one of my favourites, and its based on "story of your life," a 1998 short story by Ted Chiang, this movie spent a long time in development hell as it was believed to be unfilmable it took years for a production company to take a chance on it, and it took a few more years on top of that to tweak the script until a studio wanted to fund the shoot. When he saw the finished film (when it finally got made), Chiang really enjoyed it, finding it to be both a great adaptation and a great all-round movie. When casting was underway Amy Adams was Denis Villeneuve’s first choice for the role of Louise. Adams reportedly accepted the part within 24 hours of receiving the script. Other fun facts about it a whole language was created for this movie, During pre-production director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer created an entire language for the movie. Along with their creative team, they put together a “logogram bible” containing more than a hundred different linguistic images. Out of these hundred-plus logograms, a total of 71 actually appear in the finished film. Denis Villeneuve made his screenwriter Eric Heisserer work for weeks on what Shang’s wife’s last words would be. So, Heisserer was pretty peeved when he found out that the words he was forced to rewrite over and over again weren’t even subtitled in the final cut. Heisserer would’ve preferred not to leave the words a mystery to English-speaking audiences and is happy to translate the film’s most crucial line of dialogue for anyone who asks: “In war, there are no winners, only widows.” In order to prepare for the role of a linguistics expert in this movie, Amy Adams consulted with an actual linguistic professor named Jessica Coon, who teaches at McGill University. According to Coon, what the movie gets right about language is its interactive nature, although she contests claims that the filmmakers invented a whole new language for the movie. I watch a lot of reactions, I love that you feel about films ( several of them now ) as I do. I am an old man, and to see a young lady get it as emotionally deeply as you do makes me smile. This movie touched me, as I am sure you understand. At some point I hope to see you react to "Everything, Everywhere, all at once" another film that deeply touched me. Oops I just found that you already have, as I said I am old and forgetful sometimes :)
Arrival is my fav sci-fi movie of the modern era. Found you through your reactions to Lord of the Rings. Loved your reaction for my fav fantasy movies and now loved this reaction too. Keep up the good work.
This movie is why I'll always trust Denis Villeneuve at the helm of a film. This one's among my favourites of all time, it deserves every bit of praise thrown its way.
Louise's choice to go through it all, knowing she'll experience time non-linearly, she'll be living in that grief the rest of her life. But she will also have those good moments, and Hannah will have had a happy childhood prior to her sickness, and she deserves that. Life is more than just about how you come into the world and what you leave behind.
Reminds me of a quote from another Jeremy Renner film, 'Wind River': "I got some good news, and I got some bad news. Bad news is you're never gonna be the same. You're never gonna be whole, not ever again. You lost your daughter. Nothing's ever going to replace that. Now the good news is, as soon as you accept that, and you let yourself suffer... you allow yourself to visit her in your mind, and you'll remember all the love she gave you, all the joy she knew. ... You can't steer from the pain. If you do, you'll rob yourself... You'll rob yourself of every memory of her. Every last one. From her first step to her last smile. Kill 'em all. Just take the pain ... It's the only way you'll keep her with you."
Anywho, great reaction! And yes, this film rewards the viewer when they watch it the second time around, though it means having to suffer through the emotional anguish of Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight"

The movie is based on a short story called "Story of Your Life". When you watch the movie, you get the human experience, you don't know what will happen and you watch the story unfold. If you then read the short story you get the alien experience. You know most of the details of the story in advance and you are watching how the story fills in.
Absolutely brilliant and delicate movie, I loved it a lot.
This film broke me when I first watched it. As a parent even the thought of the choice she had to make was inconceivable for me.
I completely understand her choice. As a grieving parent I would do anything to see my child again, it's an unbreakable bond, an imprint if you will... it's about her perception of this love and the longing for it, despite the unavoidable grief. Definitely one of my all time best... made me feel emotional in ways a movie had not done before, reflecting on my own life, choices made and the inevitability of time.
When you bring a child into the world, you've sentenced them to death.
It may be minutes or years or decades, but they're going to die.The best you can hope for is that they outlive you, and they get to die in their sleep.
It's ALL about what happens in between. The theme "the Nature of Daylight" captures that aching ephemeral beauty.
How could you unwish their existence?
A profoundly beautiful movie.

And you really couldn't have a better casting of Amy Addams and Jeremy Renner, both just great actors.
When you started with "Why does the music sound so sad?" I thought to myself, oh just get ready. The beginning of the film is beautiful and heart wrenching. By the end I was so emotional and gutted. As a parent I think it's impossible not to feel wrecked after this film. My friend who I saw it with told me the next day he sat in his car for a few minutes crying after the film. He has two daughters so it hit him especially hard.
Arrival was based on the Nebula Award winning short story, Story of Your Life, by Ted Chiang and can be found as part of a collection of his short stories in Stories of Your Life and Others. It was nominated for 8 Oscars (including Best Picture) at the 89th Academy Awards. And it did win a Hugo Award that the original work was denied (It had been nominated previously). It’s a truly thought provoking story.
I love the message of : "try to understand and talk not shoot"
This movie manages to combine few big deep ideas together. It’s actually more spiritual film than anything else. The whole concept is around the idea that the language changes the way we see things. Which is true if one learns other languages well enough.
Then comes the bigger spiritual themes of celebration of life with all it’s twists and turns and even in death there is deep beauty in it. It’s a master piece.
"The journey is the destination." is hardly a new concept, but this movie offers a particularly impactful take on it. Fantastic movie, meticulously crafted, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I really like this movie, even though I personally never watched it before,but i like it
This is true pure sci fi. Masterful. It explores the Kierkegaardian conundrum, the unavoidable nature of regret… eg. Marry, and you will live with regrets; don't marry, you will also find regret. In this instance, knowing she would have a daughter that would die but chose that path anyway because the benefits outweighed the inevitable pain of loss.
"The Story of Your Life and Others." - Ted Chiang. Is an amazing short story collection and every one of the stories are incredible.

God Max Richters "On the nature of daylight" (the song at the beginning of the movie) is so beautifully composed that I can't help but cry every time I hear it.

The first scenes shown in the movie are actually the "End" of the movie and the scenes shown at the end of the movie are actually the beginning of the movie. In conclusion this coincides with the theme of Time not being Linear.
The short story/novella it is based on is all about the language and, if you enjoy linguistics, it's a treat. The Time elements in the book and the film are so interesting too.
In the beginning of the movie, Ian says to Louise that language is the first "weapon" to be used in a conflict. When Louise asks why are you here and they say "offer weapon", they mean they are here to offer us the weapon of their language, so we could understand how time really works.
Interstellar leaves you crying and in awe, because all of it (in some way) is based on real, possible, or plausible physics. Arrival just breaks your mind entirely.
Such a great film, and good to see an alien film that didn't involve fighting them, trying to understand them 1st.

arrival is holds 3rd position on my "best movies ever" list:
1. Interstellar (obviously)
2. Oppenheimer
3. A tie between Arrival and Inception
close behind these are the 12th fail, 3 idiots, the martian, dead poets society (it was amazing)
If you haven't seen even a single one from this list, I recommend it more than anything. And also, there's one show better then everything mentioned here, better then harry potter, star wars, avengers, game of thrones etc.. It's the best show ever created called ATTACK ON TITAN. YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT !!

Ok. Just finished. That was good. Actually, as I was listening to your post script comments I was thinking phenomenal? Yeah. Also, is it amazing how someone can come up with an idea for a movie like this, yet at the same time we know that "aliens" won't be humanoid shaped. Right? It stands to reason... Any time you see an alien in a movie from years past, if they look humanoid, human-shaped, then they ARE humanoid and not alien. Aliens will not look like us and not share our language. Just look at how many diverse cultures and languages we have right here on Earth. Thousands! 😊 Aliens from another world? Yeah, no. But this movie brings a little more reality. Thanks Stef. Always best to go in as unprepared as possible. Sometimes trailers give away important plot points too early. Some things you cannot avoid from the Title of course.

Beautiful Quebec film locations...i so so love that movie, for everything.....images, script, music..
I had this movie very mildly spoiled for me, in that someone revealed that there was a twist at all. So, I went into it expecting something, and ended up figuring it out about 15 minutes before the reveal. And yet, when the big reveal happened, I was still absolutely floored, cried, went through all the emotions anyway. I just adore this movie. It's one of the best-written stories... ever. I still need to read Ted Chiang's short story that it's based on.
And, it's now the cornerstone of my theory of what makes a great twist. A truly great twist is un-spoilable, because creating a great twist isn't about shocking or even tricking the audience. It's about recontextualization, for both yourself and the characters. It's about taking the assumptions we've all made and flipping them, in order both to understand our own limited perceptions as humans, and to further endear us to the struggle of the characters impacted. When Louise finally understands that she is remembering her future, not her past, she and we as the audience finally understand the full weight of the emotional journey before her, and what it means to accept everything we have seen in the film up to that point. That life is about... all of it--the tragedy _and_ the joy--and that true peace comes from looking at it in whole and choosing it anyway. It's really very profound.
SPOILERS FOR A SHOW AHEAD (since other people will still care):
One other example that I think is a great twist is in Mr. Robot, which actually has a double-twist in the first season that left me absolutely emotionally devastated. I predicted the first one, where Mr. Robot turned out to be a figment of Elliot's imagination based on his father, but I didn't foresee Darlene being Elliot's sister, and that they had planned the entirety of the events in season 1 together before it even started. But this was another example where, even though I figured it out about an episode prior, just understanding what Elliot must be going through with his fragmented mind and having to relive that trauma--understanding the _context_ of the twist--honestly made it hit even harder. Once you understand the twist, suddenly all the odd, detached behavior, his time skips and weird dissociations, suddenly make so much more sense, and you're left feeling for this very damaged person on screen before you, and living their experience with them.

Anyway, yes, Arrival is one of my favorite films ever. It honestly deserved way more critical, industry, and audience acclaim than it got. It also cemented Denis Villeneuve as one of my favorite directors ever, after Sicario which is the first film of his I saw. I hope you check out more of his other work like Sicario, Prisoners, Dune, and Blade Runner 2049. Those last two especially are more sci-fi, and you clearly have a love for the genre. (Though, watch the first Blade Runner before you watch Blade Runner 2049.)

You have to consider whether Louise can even change the future. It may be that her future memories are the same as past memories. Unchangeable.
It's also possible that, like past memories, future memories are hazy with gaps and often unreliable.
Some people have issues with Louise just going ahead with having Hannah. But is it fair to expect someone to prevent something good in the world even if it's temporary? If you ask many parents who have lost a child if they want to erase that childs existence and also the memories of that child I think those parents would say no. So is it fair to expect Louise to do that? Are those future memories actually any different to past memories?
Pretty interesting to think about this but also a bit mind bending.
While this movie doesn't show any instances of her changing her "future," if could be possible if she still remembers the possible timelines as well as the finalized timelines, but I don't think that's what they were going for.
I think you really hit on the main idea though, which is that though we all wish X, Y, Z things had never happened, those same things made us who we are. Louise lives in a sort of unbounded now, where she is experiencing the loss of her daughter at the birth of her daughter, but the opposite is also true. Beauty is often intrinsically tied to pain. Birth/death, love/loss, etc. As CS Lewis said: the only way to protect yourself from pain is to love nothing. I think this film is really about accepting life for what it is and learning to be content, understanding good times and bad times will happen and that we should be present for them all.

Typically I hate films about time travel, because they always run into issues of the time paradox. Similarly high concept films like Inception or Interstellar just hit silly notes that make my eyes roll. Even The Matrix completely falls to pieces by the third instalment. This is one of very few that manages to tell its story and doesn't trip over itself.
Denis Villeneuve is fast becoming one of my favourite directors. With Sicario, Dune, Arrival and Blade Runner and Prisoners under his belt he's one of very few that is keeping Hollywood relevant. Even though the Dune universe doesn't make sense to me and I wonder how that franchise will tie together, I'm still blown away by the cinematography. The aesthetic alone is making his late string of blockbusters worth the ticket.

I was the same in terms of the moment I realised that Louise was actually seeing thr future. Having watched a few reactions subsequent to me watching it myself I noticed that for many people the "who is this child?" line is a jaw drop OMG moment. But for me it took a couple of minutes after that before it clicked that Louise hadn't had her daughter yet.
There are several tipoffs in the movie: "We are so bound by time." from the opening blatantly tells viewers to be aware of the perception of time, Ian asking about the theory that understanding a language rewires your brain and changes your perception coupled with Louise experiencing hallucinations / dreams, and then the blatant scene where Ian says "non-zero sum game" and Louise remembers Ian saying it and offers the phrase to Hannah shows us that some kind of unexpected causality is happening.
More subtly in later viewings, Louise experience remembering Hannah at points where Louise is interacting with the alien language.
Truly Arrival is a meticulously crafted movie.

wonderful reaction to a wonderful movie
As a linguistics, cinephile, and sci fi nerd, this flick is my bag. For a non Asimov, Hawking, Sagan based on film, good work. My thesis is we gotta 1st gotta speak dog/cat/fish/bird n bug before we talk "Out of Earth" folk, but just a theory.
This film blew my mind with ideas that it puts out there, and the one to me that was mind expanding was that space travel could be done with time travel, in fact, it is possibly the only way to travel the distances between habitable areas of space. As to why 12 alien ships, 12 hours on a clock.
Why would aliens care about a human clock face? Or even know about it when departing their planet.
The aliens wouldn't, but the creators of the movie did, and they were giving us hints at time travel before just telling us that is what it was all about.@@Yggdrasil42
