  • Has King Charles wooed David Beckham away from Prince Harry? | Palace Confidential
Is Prince Harry as close to David Beckham as he used to be, or has his dad turn his old pal’s head?
That’s what some royal watchers are asking after reports emerged that the King has lined up Becks to become one of the figureheads of his new-look Kings Foundation. The Daily Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden believes that now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have left the royal fold their appeal has waned.
‘One of the problems Harry and Meghan face is that they have lost a bit of their cachet, they don’t have many baubles to hand out,’ he tells our royal talk show Palace Confidential.
The paper’s columnist Sarah Vine says that in the past Harry might have been useful for celebrities hoping for gongs.‘Presumably if they’d have stayed within the fold, they’d have had some influence,’ she tells the show.

@TheChristineLindsay As a Canadian, I agree with you but possibly on more aggressive terms. If minor Royals started showing up on state visits, that would be the end of my acceptance of Britain as Head of State. Especially if the Yorks become involved. There's no escaping their understandable loyalty to their parents and one can surmise they'd probably be pushing to get them involved as well. Anyway, that would be a risk. No aspersions to Sarah and Andrew but their copy books are blotted and that's the end of it. Why introduce the risk of them creeping back in to the working Royal fold on their daughters' shirttails?

I think Queen Elizabeth thought that the Waleses, Anne, Andrew (who was a working royal at the time) and the then Wessexes would be able to handle the royal workload without the York sisters. We’ve all seen how drastically things have changed since that decision was made. Also, it seems that Eugenie has had a degree of closeness to H&M but I’m not as sure about Beatrice. I think she would do marvellously as a working royal, if she was interested.

I just posted my dislike of the York family too. If allowed to be working royals, I could see them attending a royal function with their despicable father, Andrew, walking right behind them. With the York girls approval. Their attention seeking ways to be relevant annoy me tremendously. They are too far down the line of succession, and will be more so once the Prince and Princess of Wales children start having their own offspring. We should count our lucky stars that Andrew and Harry will never be King or considered relevant again.

David is a kind, normal loyal man, he goes where he wants and has given people chances, he knows Harry is being led down a path no one wants to be on, so for that reason he has distanced himself from Harry. Meghan is poisonous ☠️ He does not want that negativity attached to his family. So he takes the high road.

The King and Queen in Kenya were brilliant. I did especially enjoy the baby rhino footage. I saw the Beckhams documentary, and I think he and Victoria are fabulous. They were snubbed, and purposefully not invited to the evening reception of the Royal Monticeto grifters, and all the shenanigans when David went to Australia for the Invictus Games. And Megsy trying to get free clothes from Victoria. And David waiting in line for viewing the Queen last year, for hours, was admirable. Except for Richard, Lt Major Johnny is the best. Hubba Hubba. And as always, the montage at the end was delightful. Richard is tan? Are you sure about that?!

King Charles wooing David Beckham as an ambassador is a brilliant move. Throughout his entire astonishing career he never wavered in his support of the Monarchy. The people absolutely adore him and he has that star quality which will attract many to whatever patronage he is involved with. He is a national treasure and King Charles in his infinite wisdom realizes that. As far as using Eugenie and Beatrice as representatives of a patronage is a big mistake. Especially with a history of their personal associations with Harry and Meghan Markle. People have long memories!
I couldn't disagree with Richard more on this subject. Edward and Sophie as well as Mike and Zara would be far better choices. They are adored and hugely respected by the people. The four of them are acutely aware of selfless service and would carry out their duties that would make King Charles proud. Might I add that promoting the handsome Johnny to such a prominent position in the Monarchy is another brilliant move by King Charles. A young man who protected and served his country with distinction. And now to continue that service to the Crown makes absolute sense. After all Queen Elizabeth saw in him a young man of honor, loyalty and service. King Charles obviously sees the same attributes his beloved mother did. So bravo King Charles for a job well done!

I think your guest takes for granted the work William and Catherine do and the way they do it. No matter how "royal" the treatment they get as they do it, having to be on 24/7 has its own element of exhaustion. The pressure and the demands on them to be perfect is constant. The sacrifices they make on a personal level go with the job but that doesn't make them any less difficult. Your guest's flippancy regarding this couples "job" and her dismissiveness of the toll it can take on any person, shows a lack of understanding, empathy and kindness. She could learn a lot from W and C .

I doubt that anyone can replace King Charles in his former role as director of various projects because nobody else has invested the decades of serious study, research, networking and on-the-ground knowledge of various cultures he has. The only thing the Beckhams or any celebrity can bring to the table is getting the attention of the public. The King has always preferred to have the attention go to his projects than to himself. Fortunately, he brings all his study and experience to the throne. Sadly, his projects will probably fizzle somewhat under the guidance of less depth of mastery. but there's no way around that. Who could possibly replace him?

@@karengreybill2860 Thanks for bringing up this point. I don't know much about King Charles's trust in the wrong people. All of his projects have turned out brilliantly so he must have chosen the right people a great deal of the time. We all make mistakes from time to time. That can't be avoided. I'd like to know more about whether or not misplaced trust is a pattern with the King or the inevitable result of having to place so many people in positions of trust.

I'd like to see the Duke & Duchess of Glasgow become involved in more royal visits if possible. Don't want to see Harry or Markle anywhere near the RF business. They've cooked their goose as far as I'm concerned.
