  • We all meme about game journalists because their work is often fast, loose, and filled with errors. It comes with the territory because of how fast they need to write things. Even then though, it's fun to pick apart.

    Game Journalism as an occupation only made sense when there was a bi-weekly magazine coming out, giving you the latest news on gaming + reviews + the odd strategy guide and demo. At this point this occupation has been outclassed to an extraordinary degree by reviewers, lets players, speed runners, people who make tutorials and indiependent youtube news channels. Why would I sit down and read a DD guide from some rando that probably hasn't even played the game for more than 5 hours that simply has to fulfill an article quota and not just go to a channel dedicated to DD.

      Not entirely true. Plenty of guides on these sites are actually great, IGN surprisingly does a lot of great guides. Just recently, I was using their Cyberpunk 2077 quest guides. Generally the more popular the game, the better the guides. But only the guides are worth anything. The reviews and other articles from these sites are almost always trash though.

I NEVER used highwayman because they said he was bad, and I didn’t want to risk having anyone die, and I also didn’t use dance teams other than grave robber and I always kept a vestal and jester in my party. I now actually use good teams and experiment with things like bonk vestal and 3 plague doctors and I’ve been enjoying the game a lot more. These articles feel like the author played this game until they got a single hero to level 6 on radiant and they have no idea what they’re talking about.

    Oh, and the Courtyard team, featuring no-speed-trinkets Leper, Crusader, Man-At-Arms and Arbalest, because "each rank of the team has fat HP and PROT to survive".

    If I may I’d like to share a short story of deceit, idiocy, pain and victory. So there I was looking at what trinkets were up for grabs when I saw that the Miller farmstead boss fight would reward me with a feather crystal charm (even though I had one already I think it’s one of the best universal blue trinkets out there, also it was literally the best reward that week) so I look up “How to kill Miller” and find some gamepressure guide explaining that the starting 4 heroes are in fact the best team to take on the Miller and seeing as my starting four had just levelled up to rank 4 and the mission was a rank 3 I thought everything had aligned in my favour. What really threw me was that on the way to the boss the team handled everything pretty much perfectly, but then the Miller came along and well basically wiped the floor with them, sigh.. you really do live and learn with this game. So Ofc I lost all of my best trinkets as well and then the Shrieker showed up and I had a stroke of genius! I equipped and an anti & MAA team with dodge as the strategy since they were level 2’s and they were begging me not to send them, in the end this only negated maybe 1/4 of the attacks BUT IT WAS ENOUGH. WE SURVIVED AND I GOT ALL OF MY TRINKETS BACK. This game really knows how to punch you in the balls with one hand while tossing you off with the other. Needless to say whoever wrote that article needs to be arrested for the death of my Dismas and Reynald. Rest in peace Reynald, who took 4 death blow resists before finally yielding. Anyone else got a crazy DD story arc?

    • @RickFoxChicken
      @RickFoxChicken Před 2 lety +11

      I lost Dismas pretty early on to spider crits, I hadn't bought him the reposte skill yet. About 15 weeks later I got the chance to resurrect a fallen hero. I had 2 really good heroes, but felt strongly that bringing back my negative quirk heavy Dismas was the only real choice. Fast forward through many Wield runs and I removed enough negative quirks to make him a very positive character. I found myself in a surprise fight against the thing from the stars. My team was already high on stress and in a bad way. 2 members suffered afflictions and 3/4 were on deaths door. This time I chose reposte. The thing attacked Dismas and he dodged, avoiding a death blow and crit on the reposte. Dismas finished the thing in a surprise turn of events, both saving party members and righting the original wrong of not using reposte.

    • @wolframvonstein4526
      @wolframvonstein4526 Před 2 lety +5

      So I sent off Hellion, Bounty Hunter, Occultist and Musketeer into my very second cove mission. Nothing too crazy going on, until I got my first visit by the Collector, which I could dismiss fairly quickly to my surprise, due to first turn uppercut-stun and later aggresively marking and ambushing that guy. Guess it's nothing spectacular to all the veterans out there, but I was a noob back then, still am one now, and grinned with joy. It was a medium length run, so I figured I'd camp soon afterwards, where I stupidly chose to not let my Occ avoid midnight calamities - next thing I know, an unexperienced player with an unexperienced team has to face four pelagic dipsh!ts in pitch black, thank you very much. But in Germany we say: "Das Glück ist mit den Dummen", meaning something like "Fortune shines for dummies". So even though my party got roughed up, putting BH onto death's door plus a bad healing roll, I managed to kill the things, stitch him up and finish the dungeon I was at least halfway through already.
      And the five of us lived on to get wrecked by DD another day, which hasn't come yet. Until then I remind myself, that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

    That's the weird part. I think if u played through like 30 weeks u should get some idea of who to target first. Considering this person knows that it is indeed a move that exists, it's really weird that they talk about recovery from it when they could've just said that u should focus it down as an almost 1st priority since the team they present can def do that. Why wold u take a team with occultist as ur main healer (read: as a team with almost 4 damage dealers instead of usual 3 and a vestal in a role of a stunner+healer) and not focus fire such dangerous enemies?

  • @lustejon

    I’m amazed at fixed stereotypes about the dungeons, especially saying that “bleed doesn’t work in the cove and blight doesn’t work in the warrens”, which is straight up not true. In fact, pairing up flagg and pd with a healer and another dude of your choice is one of the strongest comps in the game.

    You may be giving more credit than is due. Honestly, like the last article you went over, it seems to have been written by someone with very little game time, or possibly none at all. The last one you did I saw a lot of familiarity with. The reason though is because I was hitting around 60 hours of time played so all of the horrible mistakes I was making (still do, just less) were fresh in my mind. I think a bit of time watching someone else play and looking at the wiki were the biggest sources of information here.

  • @disasterjones5798
    @disasterjones5798 Před 2 lety +1

    If the author of this article was forgetting the difference between blights and diseases, then I could see where some of the weird advice regarding blight damage is coming from. I know I mixed them up in the beginning (both have those putrid green icons) and thought there were blighting enemies in the cove for the longest time.
    This one seems at least slightly better researched and thought-out than the tierlist, but ultimately, I've just accepted that game journalists don't have the time or capacity to give a thorough and accurate breakdown of most titles because of the way the industry is these days.
    I miss when we had catalogs and massive encyclopedia-sized magazines purely for reviews and teasers for upcoming titles, articles detailing fun facts about the hottest games, collections of tips and tricks to beating the classics, all that junk. Now it's all about getting any information whatsoever out there first, regardless of how useful it is.

    4) highwayman
    3)occultist
    2) MAA
    1) hellion
    Sure, it's not an adventurous build
    But it's a safe build that can keep giants in check
    Only thing it struggles with are no self cure for blights, lack of stress heal and depending on the moveset you use, shuffles from viragos and giants can be a problem
    It also works decently well for hag

      I wouldn't allow Occultist meme healing in Weald. You would need secondary off healer to fix Occultist opsies or just bad heals. Not only that, but also this team will struggle a lot against cleaves. Replace your Occultist with Vestal and you will get a solid safe build. Use MAA guard to protect second frontline hero from Giants and mushroom scratchers. Put cleansing crystal on MAA, so he can resist dots and debuffs.

    This Team Guide is a joke. I started playing Darkest Dungeon only two weeks ago and I feel like I'm more knowledgeable than whoever wrote this cope-paste-rephrase piece of XXXX. As a player who loved to use controlling skills (stun, pull/knockback, debuff etc.), I totally get the feel of PAIN because this guide simply ignored some very important game mechanics. I feel like being reactive is sort of like the nature of new players: trying to fix the problems rather than preventing them, i.e., always try to HEAL. Why ever bother healing if you could prevent the damage from coming? Stun them. Pull them out from their position to ban their skills. Lower their accuracy. These are the things that you SHOULD let a newbie know, which is a playstyle much safer than only focusing on killing and healing.
    To ShuffleFM:
    I'm so glad that I found you very early, without being contaminated by those non-sense guides. You clearly knows how this game works and I love how you emphasize being PROACTIVE. Learned a lot and am improving a lot. Don't be mad at those game guide writers. Not everyone loves and respect this game and their work. Some people just cares about getting some $$$ nothing else. Please keep going and cheer up! "Continually onslaught, destroy, them, ALL."

    Not as much of a defence for the journalist, rather than me finding inconsistencies in your arguments/points, (which you so kindly insisted on being important from 9:54 haha.)
    7:30 to be fair, while battle medicin is indeed a great skill (Arguably the best consistent heal to put someone off Death's Door), considering that no non-boss units unique to ruins have blight/bleed attacks, the skill ends up having much less of an impact (once again, aside from putting heroes off DD).
    6:19 kind of an odd statement when 6:54 and 7:10 follows shortly after, but indeed true for the rest of the video.
    11:47 Haha, this journalist is right about BH's effectiveness in the Warrens for all the wrong reasons, and yet the approach of bonus dmg + mark synergy was right too.
    16:57 My take on this would be that Weald features a lot of cloned enemies, like Ectoplasm that keeps spawning more if you don't take out multiple of them in a matter of 1-2 turns, or the 2 Fungal artillery + 2 fungal Scratcher combo where one of the FA usually get a mark off before you can take care of them both, so now you need to focus a bit more on the FS as to not have your marked dude get wrecked. In terms of ruins the bone arbalest and courtier both are prime targets, but for different reasons, which you can prioritize as you see fit (Or rather, in terms of what your team is suffering the most from currently). However I myself actually find this to be even worse in the Warrens. Outside of perhaps the Swine chopper, there's not a warrens exclusive enemy that I wouldn't want to have dead by turn -1 if I could.
    The rest of the ranting I pretty much agree with. The Journalists makes some pretty odd statements while forgetting to communicate important aspects like just how good stuns are.
    Also:
    20:39 lol
    29:08 Now that's a yikes...

    I place vestal in 3 not 4 simply because she can’t stun in 4.
    Blight damage is not strong, it’s consistent. There’s no instance when blight damage is dealing bonus damage anyway. Instead of saying blight damage is strong in the ruins, it’s better to say it’s more consistent because skeletons have weak resistance so you can apply blight without worrying about it failing to work. And it’s useful against commanders and defenders as it bypasses their high prot. Blight also leaves no corpses, which denies the standard bearer skeleton its ability to resurrect.
    Article at least mentions stun. It does not mention move skills which can render bone courtiers and pelagic shamans pretty much helpless.

    • @silverbolt6699
      @silverbolt6699 Před 2 lety +2

      You're mistaken here. I think you mean that Vestal cannot TARGET the enemy position 4. She can however stun FROM your position 3 and 4. So there is no reason to not run her in position 4 over 3. Hope this helps. (Positions being 4, 3, 2, 1- 1, 2, 3, 4)
