- After replacing the radiator on my 1966 Mustang, the next item to tackle was the leaky rear axle seal. While I was in there, I replaced the drum shoes too.
This video is a How To Install A Rear Axle Seal in a 1966 Mustang
The car is a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a factory V8 and 4 speed transmission.
Shot with GoPro Hero 5, edited on Davinci Resolve 16.

Each one of your videos makes me miss my 65 Mustang even more! I can't wait to see the next video.
In the mean time, there's over 200 videos on here for you to watch. :)
Good job! I forgot how much of a pain in the ass drum brakes are.
Truth!! Next time I'll hire you to do them. :)
I watched the whole video contemplating whether or not I should do my own rear drum brakes on my 67... I'm dreading it even more now
The drum brakes on any car can be intimidating, but all that hardware in there is not as confusing as it looks. Take pics and take your time and you'll get through it! :)
Nice
Thanks
Hi Andy great video. Question : Where did you find the rear seal puller ? I do not find such a tool here in Germany. Who is the manufacturer ? Many thx Thomas
Thanks!
Try looking up oemtools 27129. It's not a high quality tool, but it's good enough for this kind of job. :)
Andy, when you used the Quick Jack where did you place the blocks on? Was it the pinch welds or somewhere else?
Unfortunately it was the pinch welds this round. I was planning on doing some brakeline work and exhaust work while the car was up in the air and putting the blocks at the frame rails would have been in the way. Normally we'd be under the frame rails.
Where did you order the seals from? Do you have a part number? I would like to pickup at a local automotive store not cj pony parts.
That axle seal is made by Centric, and the part number is 417.65014
The OD of the seal is 2.085" and the ID is 1.365"
Andy do you know the correct part number for speed bleeders?
I never did get them, I ended up bleeding the brakes the old fashioned way. :)
Have you considered adding rear quarter windows to simulate a GT 350?
Yes, I have a set that came with the fastback, but I think I’m going to stick with the vents. 🙂
Does the backing plate have to be removed in order to install the new seal?
Nope, even the drum brake assembly can be left in place to replace this seal. :)
I'm having a hard time finding the gasket (if that's what they are called) that goes on both sides of the baking plate between the axle housing and the plate that holds the axle in. What is that called? Where did you get yours from?
I believe the gasket you are looking for is the Fel-Pro 55001 gasket.
@@AndyKruseChannel Got it. Thanks. I wondered if I would get a response since you posted this 3 yrs ago. There are so many that don't. I really appreciate your channel.
I wonder how much of a pain it would be to replace the springs etc with the axle in?
Sorry boss, I'm not understanding the question?
@@AndyKruseChannel My fault. I should have explained better. I'm rebuilding my rear brakes. All new springs, brackets, shoes etc but my axles will be in. I wonder how much of a fight I will have to get those items in with the axle flange being in the way.
@@joebob344 It shouldn't be an issue to service your brakes with the axle installed. It is not common for people to remove the rear axle when working on the drum brake components. All parts to the drum brakes are designed to be removed and replaced easily and quickly. It's just the installation order that can get confusing. :)
What is the part number and brand
The axle seal brand is Centric, part number 417.65014
