Kensington Philadelphia Drug & Crime Problems
Violent crime and drug abuse in Philadelphia as a whole is a major problem. The city’s violent crime rate is higher than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas.1 Also alarming is Philadelphia’s drug overdose rate. The number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50% from 2013 to 2015, with more than twice as many deaths from drug overdoses as deaths from homicides in 2015.2 A big part of Philadelphia’s problems stem from the crime rate and drug abuse in Kensington.
Because of the high number of drugs in Kensington, the neighborhood has a drug crime rate of 3.57, the third-highest rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia.3 Like a lot of the country, a big part of this issue is a result of the opioid epidemic. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed over the last two decades in the United States and Philadelphia is no exception. Along with having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% percent of Philadelphia’s overdose deaths involved opioids2 and Kensington is a big contributor to this number. This Philly neighborhood is purportedly the largest open-air narcotics market for heroin on the East Coast with many neighboring residents flocking to the area for heroin and other opioids.4 With such a high number of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have zoned in on this area to try and tackle Philadelphia’s problem.

I’m confused and have so many questions. There are so many levels to this. Level 1: Why is the city so dirty, like an excessive amount of trash all over the place. I have never been to Philly, does Philly have a trash collecting problem or it’s just concentrated here? Level 2: this is broad day light and people are comfortable to just shoot up openly, like it’s nothing. Level 3: people are walking around or just passing the addicts like it’s nothing, while they take drugs openly or look like a zombie bent over, which means it’s normalized so clearly it’s been happening for quite a while. Level 4: is the state doing anything about this? I saw more than one ambulances parked up in one of the frames, are they on standby in case someone over dose? And if there aren’t enough problems here comes level 5: the crime scene. This is a heavy heavy heavy video.

This has been a problem for years and it’s not a D or R issue. It’s a systemic issue. The country caters to the wealthiest of the wealthy and screw everyone else. Decades of wage stagnation, deregulation to the point of criminality, education system that’s crap considering the country spends 6% on education (k-12) and 60% on defense. The country spends more on defense than the 10 other developed countries combined. I’d argue we are no longer a developed nation and the numbers back this up.
Failed nation. Boomers literally looted this country and denied reality for decades ......now they want us to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps lol. Tell it to the people who has several USEFUL degrees, working 2-3 jobs, who STILL can’t afford a place to live. Do you think that makes a person hopeful? Happy? Motivated?
You can do everything right and end up here. When you do everything you were supposed to do and still can’t get ahead then you got to ask yourself..........what is the point?
You can’t even aspire to live as well as your parents. You can’t even expect to live as long since life expectancy is DROPPING in the U.S. The system is the problem.
