Apple M4 doesn't have SVE/SVE2, it only has SME, which is somewhat the evolution of those two, it's more of an analogue to intel max. Granted, apple silicon always had matrix extensions, just they were proprietary (also called AMX lel), and now they're using the ARMv9 standard ones. However SVE/2 are not present in M4, as noted in the llvm commit adding support for the platform.

AMD has been really underrated here and has always been competitive with Apple's/Qualcomm offerings when they are at lower wattages. It is Intel which is giving X86 a bad reputation. AMD didn't need to do as much cutting as Intel as their Zen micro arch has always been more energy efficient than Intel's core micro arch. I expect AMD to lead Intel and perhaps even Qualcomm. Apple is on a newer node and should be the most efficient overall.

AMD will be fine, Intel will be fine. Qualcomm is paying propaganda and their issues won't be fixed over night.
There's a reason why OEMs didn't take the risk with AMD. Its volume, Intel is the only one that could fulfill their shipments. Meteor Lake in paper should had performed better, but it didn't. So OEMs disappointed, gave AMD a bigger chance.
Which is a huge Win for AMD.
That said, Lunar Lake will be fine, also Strix Point and Halo. Lunar seems battery King and AMD performance King.
Seeing AMD is launching in July and Intel in September. Idk if Qualcomm has enough time to fix their s*&t. Both will still its thunder.

@RiccardoMerloVegan The RAM speed advantage that the M1-M2 chip had is gone with DDR5 RAM the last year.
From Meteor Lake laptops to Snapdragon X Elite laptops, most are getting 7,467 Mhz to 8448 Mhz RAM speed. Keep in mind that all current M chip pro laptops (M1 to M3) get 6,400 Mhz RAM speed. The architecture amplifies it to roughly 7,000 Mhz. Thus, 8GB is actually falling behind with Macbooks. 8GB on an M3 Macbook Pro = 6.6GB of RAM with a Snapdragon X Elite laptop.

Not only that but Apple’s hardware and software is focused on one architecture. ARM.
With the amount of chip manufacturers and them trying to compete against themselves with Arm vs x86, it’ll just create a fragmentation for the PC community and put developers in a position where they’ll likely create applications that work better on one chip than it does on the other.
At least with Mac it’ll be more cut and dry. You make an app, and it works the same on all devices.

Intels Lunar Lake will be 17 watts. I think it's comparable to Apple in some regards. See Intel's 8-core vs. Apples M3 8-core. Intel's is slightly behind but very competitive. Also, Intel has the same single threaded performance as AMD. Intel is not pushing high performance, Lunar Lake was built using the Macbook Air as a reference. 8 cores but with great all-around performance and battery life.
It's impressive it's an x86 vs. an arm chip. Either way, Apple still has decoders, encoders, and accelerators, which gives Apple a huge boost for content creation. Still, Intel managed to create the perfect chip for x86 in the thin and light segment.

Giving up hyper threading isn’t about power efficiency.
Hyper threading limits the top performance you can get for a single core.
And when you actually run the two threads on one core, each of them has half of the total performance. This is actually bad for overall performance in multicore loads unless you’re using every single thread.
Hyper threading gives 20-30% more performance. Let use the best case scenario 30%.
So a core using hyperthreading has 130% the performance of a single core.

For Mac users, this may be the biggest near term benefit of this increased competition. Yes, it’s probably one of the reasons the base M4 has 6 e-cores, and it’ll likely affect the core count mix of the M4 Pro/Max as well. But these Snapdragon X Plus/Elite machines all come with at least 16GB RAM, and many start at 512GB SSD, with some being upgradable. While they are technically different markets, some non trivial percentage of the users can pretty easily switch between Mac OS and Windows, so it’s still direct competition for somewhere in the vicinity of 25%-50% of Apple’s users. My guess is it’s on the lower end of that scale, but I could be wrong.

Almost Incredible that software is what’s screwing Apple when hardware wise they are over all a no brainer choice when it used to be the opposite.
Snapdragon X elite is emulating a lot of things which hurts its scores. If it fumbles the launch no developer support will go on board to ARM and those number will remain. Nonetheless despite the poorer graphics performance, moore’s law is at such an end that those differences are marginal in real time use, making the surface pro the first full fledged 2-1 that Apple refuses to make. The surface pro is the way to go for me.

Agree from a tech standpoint, but there is a second more important factor. One thing is getting a chip roughly comparable to Apple. The other thing is the economics of the chips. Apple has a massive scale advantage between iPhone, iPad, and Mac all running the same architecture. On a yearly basis they do about 280 to 300 million high-end chips so the economy of scale is amazing. No one in Android or Windowland can come close to those numbers. Closest is Samsung who does a total of about 25 million high-end phones. Almost no tablets and very few laptops. Companies on the computer side like HP and Dell are tiny compared to Apple revenue wise. They are currently little boutique companies.

One thing you didn’t mention much (if at all) is the real world performance. And it makes sense you didn’t because of course, this is only speculation. But Apple’s chips have historically had more real world performance with the same hardware, or the same real world performance with seemingly drastically inferior specs. Might we see that again?

nah lunar lake is considered 'efficient' for intel which sips power but in reality they have a TDP of 15~30W(which is meant to 'replace' meteor lake) which is within AMD's strix point configurable TDP range and M4 TDP range. Sad that intel had to slash and reduce the perf for efficiency...the architecure must have changed quite a lot but intel needs a complete architecure overhaul at this point(issues with 13th, 14th gen, well so many problems) like AMD's 'Zen' moment. (Or maybe Apple's 'M' series moment but it is rather a new implementation instead of an architecure overhaul)

If Apple supported gaming better, esp with there current M3 lineup and had a decent graphics option from say nvidia as an option. They would have massively upturned the market and gained massive market share to boot. Instead they came up with a super good chip for everything but gaming, causing the market to react (insert arm and arm windows) and will be relatively equaled soon, with nothing gained. Waste of an amazing product market lead.
