  • Hi Everyone! Thank you for checking out our first video. For the last 7 months we have been living in our little 17 Foot Casita travel trailer. We have been all over the West Coast of US, Canada and are now traveling Florida. Soon we will be on our way to Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, New Mexico and hopefully going to check out Baja California.
    We have been dreaming about living on the road for a long time, it took us a couple years to save and make this adventure happen. Our goal is to spend at least a year on the road with a budget of $30,000 all in. So far we are right about where we should be for the 7 months we have been on the road.
    We are planning on more videos talking about our hybrid solar system( fixed and portable), as well as modification we have made to the camper to make it an ultimate go anywhere off-grid adventure rig.
    We have a lot to share about our choice of molded fiberglass camper and how it compares to stick built campers as well as Airstreams.
    Subscribe to our CZcams channel and check us out on Instagram and Facebook.

    Thanks for sharing. I have been customizing exterior racks. I learned that an aluminum diamond plate truck box fits inside a standard hitch cargo carrier...looks good and it a lot easier than tying down boxes. can also tie into lights and add a light bar on rear for brakes, signals, running lights. It is simple and easy to find truck boxes used.

    It's cool seeing you guys living in a smaller camper like that, and how you use every inch of space. So many people on CZcams that live in their campers have $100,000+ houses on wheels. Sure, anybody can live in one of those.

    You can easily sort the sagging carpet roof lining out.
    All you need is the correct adhesive and a sharp knife and rule.
    Place the rule up against the carpet roof lining and cut a straight line of approx 2 feet
    Then spray or paint on the adhesive on top of the carpet and on the roof do the same for the other side. Once the adhesive is tacky push the carpet roof lining up squeeze together to eliminate the repair cut line to complete the repair.
    Leave for a few days and continue until the whole roof section is complete.
    Safe journey both

      Haha thanks! We have gone through 3 different solar setups. I think the next video is going to be on what we have learned through this process.
      I do have to say that there something so cool about being self sustainable from energy point of view. We only have 100W roof panel and a 100w ground deployed unit and just a 100ah deep cycle AGM battery. And this is mostly enough for everything we do.
      The goal would be to have a liPo 100-200ah battery and about 500-600w of solar. This way we could run an induction cooktop and more demanding 120v gadgets. One day.

    Nice video and a nice trailer. I run a Scamp, which you probably know is similar. I'm going to be the downer guy or at the least the be safe guy who responds.
    Every time I see someone adding weight to an existing rig, that was hopefully carefully designed and spec.ed before manufacture I get a little concerned. Especially when you add weight to the rear and height. Because of the changes in center of gravity and balance. Adding weight to the rear, assuming it's even safe to do structurally, dramatically changes the balance of the rig.
    If you want to induce trailer sway add weight to the rear externally. Then throw a couple of household items to the rear in the inside. Viola. Trailer sway. In terms of structural stability a friend has a large RV and attached a hitch on the rear. He pulled a trailer with 2 ATVs on it. He almost got back from a 2000 mile trip to the Rocky's and for some reason inspected the hitch and it was barely hanging on. Very close to disaster potentially including loss of human life. So, just be careful.
    I think it's best to have stuff like that done by professionals. I personally would never do it (add a hitch or additional weight bearing capabilities). Most rigs are already designed to be as light as possible and to do that metal and other components of the least possible expensive and mass yet capable of providing roadworthyness are used.
    That's a nice lift. I've considered doing that and still may but frankly only very tentatively and thinking about it a lot as well as consulting with professionals (not just a shop that will make a buck doing it). That's a very substantial raising of the center of gravity and will make you rig much more "tippy". If you understand that and incorporate it into your behavior maybe fine.
    The manufacturer of Casitas would probably say "Uh uh. Don't do that.". I was considering putting bigger tires on my Scamp and the factory, well someone at the factory, said pretty much that. Maybe protecting their butts but think about that a little. You get in an accident and someone gets hurt and you've done something to change the handling characteristics or structural integrity of your rig and your insurance company goes, "You did what?".
    Careful out there. Seriously.
    Again, a nicely done video and a great looking rig. Thank you.

    • @TTarlov
      @TTarlov  Před 5 lety +3

      Hey thanks for the comment. I can go into a long detail about how " professionals" most of the time know less than I do about a lot of this. I had dealerships forget to tighten my wheels a and put wrong fluid into transmission. I don't trust what you would call professionals.
      But instead of staying anything more I would say this. If you are afraid of doing anything you will sit at home and be worried about slipping and falling when you walk out of your house.
      I don't do anything stupid. But I won't be asking a structural engineer to tell me if adding 150lbs to my camper will cause it to sway more.
      We have put 20k miles on this setup and have not had any issues at all. Does the camper sway anymore? Nope it feels just fine doing 80mpg in cross winds. Does it feel "tippy"? Nope, we take it on off road 4x4 trails all the time.

    • @TTarlov
      @TTarlov  Před 5 lety +5

      @Autumn Rowan I see what you mean. It's like with anything. I have modified everything from cars to motorcycles to bicycles. The thing is that most vehicles be it trailers or cars are built to handle more than what they claim.
      Like for example if you two 1000 lbs more with your truck it won't explode or break in half. Will it wear faster, sure it will. Will your dealership deny you warranty? Maybe but that's a debate.
      That said if you are one of the people that is worries about things that you might not fully understand you should not modify it.
      I have truck tires on my camper, is that legal? I have no idea, probably not. Do I care? Nope. I check the load rating on the tires and roughly know how much it weighs. Numbers line up just fine so I don't worry.

    well… encouraging, if yours is 20 years old then maybe my Casita has a few more years left, but is less than 10 years old and already showing lots of wear, mainly popped rivets, broken cabinet door hinges, dents and dings. I picked up on a couple additions I’m interested in, the stick on shelves (for sat receiver). The shelf under table is clever. Thanks for sharing 😉

    Great video. Your Casita seems to have the A/C on the lower front right of the trailer, which was standard on the 16 ft. but optional on the 17' back then. I used to live near the factory in Rice, TX, and hung out at Larry's house, of Little House Customs. Many moons ago, I had an 87 16 ft. Casita, which had ,such less storage than yours. Great little egg trailers. Nice setup.

    Very glad to see the Casita being highlighted. I have a 2013 Spirit Deluxe 17' for just me and two pups. The camper living area part is actually about 13 feet. The 17 foot measurement includes the hitch. Love your generator carrier. Also, love your kitchen without the big, bulky fan like I have. I've considered removing it from my Casita.

    • @TTarlov
      @TTarlov  Před 5 lety +2

      As far as removing the range hood goes it absolutely opens up the area so much. However it does cause a bit of an issue when cooking if you do a lot of it inside. The steam and sometime oil from cooking gets on the above cabinets and will eventually cause issues. I will try to eventually make some sort of a fan that sucks out the steam through the existing hole.

    Wow. I pull a 16 ft Scamp and no way would I put that much weight in the rear. Not as much because of insufficient structural stability but rather because of weight distribution. Putting weight on the rear of a rig like that is a good way to make it sway. Be careful.

    • @TTarlov
      @TTarlov  Před 5 lety +2

      I have already addressed this with previous comments. The weight in the back is roughly 125lbs at most. We keep mostly clothing and a few bulcky objects in the bins. To make sure the weight is balanced we have a generator on a heavy mount on the tongue. The weight is roughly 100-130 lbs. We also keep a heavy 6 gallon water jug on the floor of the bathroom which is all thet way up front while driving.
      No sway at all here.

Fuel, food, trailer and vehicle repair, clothing and other items are expensive! Not to mention healthcare. A healthcare plan for two is probably over 2k per month with no company plan. How do you do it and still plan on retirement?

      Thanks for watching the video and commenting. To tell you the truth we are now back in our house that we were renting out while traveling. We spent just over a year on the road covering about 30k miles.
      We spent time in Canada and traveled a little in mexico. As far as money goes we actually had money we saved up over about 5 years to spend on a kitchen remodel but instead decided to spend it on this trip. It was absolutely 100% worth it. All in all we spent about $30k on the trip. But my wife ended up working for a month in a hospital in Yuma arizona, she made over 17k in that month. So that covered half of our expenses.
      Health insurance was a huge issue. We found a solution that was pretty much awful and cost us about $300 a month for two but was just incase we had something really terrible happened to us. My wife ended up having to go to an ER and this crap insurance covered $250 of a $6000 bill we got that we are still fighting. We spent an hour in the ER and my wife got an anti nausea pill, that was it!
      So for now we are back in our house but working on a plan to be able to work on the road. With remote work now a much more likely possibility it's a lot more likely.
