      If I'm not mistaken, the original Devil's Horse ( I've been fishing them for decades here in Florida ) was designed in the beginning on the St Johns river & attached lakes, because of the needle fish, and the Devil's Horse was supposedly designed to imitate them at the surface. Big bass here love to eat those needle fish ( looks kind of like a tiny gar, about 6" long or so, and long skinny snout ). A lot of giant bass caught and/or tournaments were won on the St Johns & area lakes using the Devil's Horse way back in the day, and it's still a classic favorite down here.

    • @Matt-dj3tc
      @Matt-dj3tc Před 5 lety +1

      I’m not sure where they originated. Smith wick makes the devils horse although I’m not sure where the original similar prop baits originated!

    • @howabouthetruth2157
      @howabouthetruth2157 Před 5 lety

      @@Matt-dj3tc Yes, I've always known that Smithwick invented & still produces the original Devil's Horse. To my knowledge, it was the skinniest long prop bait available when they first came out, and regardless of where the company was ( or is ) located, it's a very popular story that they were indeed first developed to imitate the needle fish in the St Johns river. This was long before they started transplanting giant Florida strain bass to other parts of the country, and Florida guides & tournament anglers alike wanted a prop bait to imitate the needle fish because the big bass eat them like crazy. The original Bagley's Bang-O-Lure also was, and still is, a very popular bait down here for basically the same reason. Only the Bang-O-Lure is a shallow floater diver "stick/jerk bait" with a prop on the tail. Jerk or twitch it, and just before it goes only inches under water, the prop on the tail makes a good commotion on the surface to attract em much in the same way. I've been fishing for bass here in Florida since 1969........and I fish now more than ever. Love it.

    Myself, I love the SMITHWICK Prop Baits. I alter my lure. I Remove the Front Blade. It twitches more side to side. Like Walking the Dog. If the bait has a Blade that is Pointed, I replace that with a Round Blade. The Slower you can work it, the Better. It really TEASES the Bass to Hit.

    • @roninmctitty6626
      @roninmctitty6626 Před 5 lety

      AC3 if ur fishing smaller lakes with shallow water(2-15ft) use a 3/8 but in big lakes or deep water use 1/2 or 3/4. There is no best weight for a jig, u have to adapt to ur situations

    • @WheelerFishing
      @WheelerFishing  Před 5 lety +1

      For me if I only had one size it would be a 1/2oz jig no doubt. Match your jig with a small chunk for a fast fall. Match it with a Krackin craw if you want to slow it down. Basically you can choose your jig trailer to help change the rate of fall to what you need for that current situation.

I use it in Wisconsin early in the year, bass, pike, and muskie hit it well... it is a pricey bait though, about $15... great bait though, it is a must have lure... you can work it fast too, once you find the speed they want at that particular time, it is a killer...
