- We get trapped in Key West while hurricane Elsa bares down on the island. We hired a diver to change our zincs as we made a plan for securing our boat against for the storm.

Our Story:
My name is Ed, I am an ex-musician, turned politician, turned tax account, who now imagines himself a sea-captain. Lyn, is an ex-model, turned photographer and the love of my life.
We have spent the last three years traveling on our 65' Hatteras Yacht and it has been terrifying. We have faced down storms, been stranded at sea, towed off shoals and run aground by careless boaters.
But it has been magical as well. We have explored places known only by those who travel by water, met incredible people along the way, and learned so much about boating - and even more about ourselves.
And to think - until three years ago, Lyn, and I, never even owned a boat.
We met when we were 21. I was a starving musician, on my way To Los Angeles to starve some more. Lyn was a model, waitressing tables and dreaming of adventure. We went on our first date to the Jersey Shore, and spent the night on a boat her father was restoring. That date has never ended.
We traveled the country together, and settled for a few years in Hollywood, where she discovered her love for photography, and I discovered that music was not going to be my career. We put down roots in Bucks County Pennsylvania. We built a house together, raised three children and became your typical American family. She opened a photography business and I opened an accounting firm.
On a vacation to Key West, we met a woman who lived on her boat. She had been an emergency room nurse for many years but decided she had had enough. She sold everything, bought a boat and sailed to Florida. We were fascinated. It seemed so romantic, so us. The seed was planted.
Flash forward a few years and the children are grown. Lyn retired from photography and sold her business. And me, well, I was only working three months out of the year and looking for a new adventure.
So, we bought our first boat. A Carver 355. No experience, and completely clueless. We hired a captain to bring us to our local marina and we were determined to learn how to operate her. We practiced in an empty marina for a couple of days and then, we just went for it! We figured, if we liked boating as much as we imagined, we would trade up to our dream boat. Two years later we did just that.
This video vlog is our story. Boating has become our passion. We invite you to share this journey with us, as we explore the waterways of the Atlantic and Caribbean, having the time of our lives, while "Trying Not To Sink."
Cheers!
Ed and Lyn.

We are currently in Florida going to the boat shows looking to purchase our first liveaboard. I recently completed my USCG OUPV 100 ton masters license and now our dream is becoming a reality!
Have fun. We loved shopping for our boat, and glad we decided on her.
Thanks for sharing ! Keep the key west videos coming !
Will do. We have plenty of footage yet to edit.
Lol, glad I'm not the only one that has the same issue with flip flops.. great video.
😁
Loved the ending! You guys are too cute together.
We are definitely Parrot Heads!
I've survived through two major hurricanes on my boat.. it's always best to over prepared than be under prepared.
And I would definitely feel very comfortable hanging around you both, you're my kind of people...🍸🍸🍹
We just left our boat in Florida, tied with 14 lines and 6 fenders!
Can never have enough lines out for a hurricane. Saved by that knowledge in the 90's.
We used 16 lines and four fenders. One of the lines broke, the others did just fine.
@1:05 that Shiney spot about 3,4 inches long on the shaft looks like something came off, a zinc perhaps
That might have been where he took off a bad zinc.
@Trying Not To Sink maybe but in your video it shows him following the shaft from propeller to where the shaft meets the boat, it's after the first zinc which looks old and crusty... I guess only you would know what was on the other prop shaft to compare and if the video was taken before the work started. love your videos BTW thank yoy so much for posting
Jimmy would be proud of you! 😁🛫
We are definitely Parrot Heads!
Lekker man lekker
OMG Glad you both ok and the boat looks fine and Still you having too much Fun Stop it lol I'm sure its not allowed Great Vlog Guys thank you

MORE MORE MORE always...you guys are always fun to watch!
We are happy you enjoy the videos, Many more to come.
Cool video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Buy some huge fenders, buy some booze, and batten down the hatches. I've ridden 7 Hurricanes on the East Coast and I am still alive with minor Dockrash to the yacht.
Good advice!
Wonderful
Hey, that's cheating, you couldn't have watched this video yet! 😁😁😁
@@tryingnottosink9107 I already know It's going to be Wonderful
I was going to ask why someone couldn't sit at the big peoples' table, but after seeing the ending, we know why now.....LoL.... as always, stay safe, Tim and Cat
🤣🤣🤣
Have you ever tried snubbers on your lines. They help prevent ripping out a cleat in storms.
No, we haven't but it sounds like a good idea. This is the first time we were in a storm where they would have been handy.
What a great pick-me-up On a snowy Carolina Sunday! I do believe it’s cocktail time 🤔
We started cocktails right after I hit publish on that video!
Good for you. I hope to live my life like you two after I retire.
You can do it! Thanks for watching,
Great video. I enjoyed your before and after shots of the cleanup.
Thanks 👍
Happy New Year Captain Sperrys and Bad Ass First Mate Mama! Thank you for your videos! Hurry up with tax season and get your happy asses down to the Bahamas! Hugs 🛥🏝🍸😎
Happy New Year! 103 days to go!
Love your videos, try not to waste away in Margaritaville
That is hard not to do!
Bring back boating weather!
103 days to go for us!
Going thru a storm like that had to be scary. Glad it all turned out ok.
It was fun once we got everything figured out and ready.
I enjoyed the before and after, good editing!
What do you mean editing! Lyn is a witch!
I have a place in Marathon, going in March. Where did you have breakfast in Key West, those eggs looked awesome
Blue Heaven. It is known as the best place for breakfast on the island. Although, there is a great Bloody Mary bar right down the street. We do both!
that was nice to actually see the sights around key west and not just bars and wierdos on main drag ha ha ha, that was a good vid of historic sights etc thanks
There is definitely a lot to see and do in Key West, in addition to the bars.
I bet you wished you coulda snapped your fingers and had it all back to right again. great video
That would have been nice!
Very cute video!!!
Thank you 🤗
You need a bigger boat !😄
The only reason to sell a boat is to buy a bigger one!!!
Preparation is everything
Better safe than sorry!
Doesn't your insurance require a storm plan? Is spiderwebing considered an adequate plan for them? Curious.
Did ya ever check out that cutlas bearing?
My insurance does not require me to do anything but my deductible goes way up in a named storm. We had all the cutlass bearing replaced a couple years ago.
@@tryingnottosink9107 yea I remember you had put everything new..........motor mounts can make vibrations too when the rubber goes bad, oil eats the rubber too but they can also come loose could've made the engine shift a small amount ? get a torque wrench check em out take you 15 minutes
Love that!! Almost first
Thanks! Watch out for Gary. He cheats by commenting before he watches! 😁
Is that the City (Bite) Marina? Doesn't look like Galeon, A&B or Conch? Never stayed at Stock Island.
Yes, it is Key West Bight, the city marina. Half the cost of the Galeon and A&B.
I'd like to try and figure out where Spider Robinson had the Callahan's crew settle in there in Key West. I'd found Callahan's Saloon on Long Island (after that bar was closed unfortunately), but I've never gotten down there. Never located Lady Sally's either unfortunately . . .
I did not know they were actual places.
@@tryingnottosink9107 The bar on Long Island was based (loosely) on a real one on Rte 25A, he claimed Lady Sally's was completely made up (I don't think anyone ever believed him LOL). I'm guessing the Key West location was based on a real place as well, but he never says in the books
Ah, the Sunsets.........Thank You !
Our pleasure!
So where is the tattoo ? I hear she's a real beauty.
You would have to follow us into the clothing optional bar on Duval St. to see the tattoos! 😁
Do you watch Nautstyles, they tour a 90 ft 1983 yacht for sale.
Yes, we just watched that video. A really nice boat, and not a bad price either. Made us a little jealous!
How much is docking fees in key west
Around $3 per foot in the off season. I think it was around $3.50 in season. I don't exactly remember.
just wondering why, we are seeing a clip from July 2021 in January of 2022. and you are calling it real time?
That clip was from a video we posted back in July. We just included a small section of it because it fit the storyline of this video.
I got less than halfway through. The background music was just too irritating.
My boat is finally fixed now i got to wait till it gets warmer so I can take her out! let's go Brandon
But there's booze in the blender 🍸⚓
It helps me hang on!
...but there's booze in the blenderand soon it will render...
although I prefer a martini, I'll make do with that crazy concoction! 😁
tourists
... all covered in oil! 😁
