    Toby , I enjoy the fact that you sail these boats and show what they’re capable of. A lot of the boat tours I see the vendor just walks through and shows the rigging and interior. Thank you for being so thorough.

    Really appreciate this video as so much attention is paid to the actual feel of the boat, the look in areas such as the salon and cockpit. So many videos are just close up direct camera shots of every surface of the boat, while missing the actual views and feel of the areas where are spend most of your time.

    I would love to see Toby have reviews of this length in all sailing yacht reviews. Yachting World, together with one other periodical is the only channel I am aware of which prepares professional sailboat reviews **including** the sailing characteristics. All others are more walkthroughs (they are also nice in their own category).
    Having said this, I am not a Yachting World subscriber and I am not paying anything for these reviews whereas Yachting World has to pay Toby and other employees. Therefore it is quite understandable that YW might be leaving the juice to the printed publication.
    On the other hand, in recent times, quite a number of CZcams channels on sailing boat walkthroughs have popped up, some with subscribers in hundreds of thousands. There is certainly a revenue-model there, though I do not know if it has the potential of compensating the revenue which would potentially be cannibalized (from printed material) with longer youtube reviews. I'd like to think that would be similar to the trap brick&mortar businesses have fallen into underestimating the potential of internet in the early days and giving Amazon and others the lion share of the market later.
    Anyways, thank you Toby for the great reviews.

      Can you elaborate on which frustrations?

    • @buttrumpus
      @buttrumpus Před 3 lety +10

      @@leonlevstik I mean, the lack of traveller immediately disqualifies it in my mind, but to continue, the running rigging being run on an indirect path with largely inaccessible lengths, the boom height, the grill being at a good working height only from the swim step, the furler drum is crammed below the deck and the furling line looks like it could chafe and it would never dry, the massive amount of space on the deck with nothing to hold onto, no good hand holds when entering the cabin, no chart table (that tiny thing they have in there is hardly helpful), the lack of sight lines from in the cabin, a fridge that opens out, the microwave and it's weird recessed motor-lifting setup, the access to the autopilot rams, and I'm probably wrong, but the mast does seem weirdly far forward for a boat to handle well. Of course, those are just my opinions and I don't think those things are all deal breakers, it just seems like it would be really frustrating to deal with that stuff. I'd also like to know how big of a battery bank it carries and how they're recharged because holy hell, it needs a big one. I'm sure it sails just fine, long term issues seem like they would be annoying is all.

    • @leonlevstik
      @leonlevstik Před 3 lety +1

      @@buttrumpus good points. But the boat is not meant to do Atlantic crossings, or any other blue water sailing, but rather med and costal sailing with small crew on 2 - 3 weeks on board and extended weekends. And yes, having Porsche to design a boat (any) isn't probably a good idea. Humpy to design a hull - good choice.
      Lack of traveler disturbed me to. Running rigging under the deck OK for me.
      Med gets heavy storms too, so life raft down below, I don't know.
      I worked in Seaway as furniture designer a decade a go, and there are some design solutions I don't like. Nice mix of classic design amd contemporary but...
      Clearly Porsche is not up to boat interior design. Nice looks and esthetics but not much of practical solutions. I would design differently that galley, salon & births. Like the cockpit doe, not the winches position amd nice solution for leftover ropes in locker (if it's drained & good chamfered)

  • @sergest-pierre6160
    @sergest-pierre6160 Před 3 lety +3

    Nice, very good looking but is there a market for this kind of boat, not a racer or fast, not a blue water (like Amel), large cruising monohull. I would not want one new, maybe use at half price in a few years. Too big to be a weekender and not quite design to be a live aboard. The interior layout is disappointing except for the galley. You don't see out, no nav station and very small head for such a big boat. Feature and layout wise, it looks like something that Beneteau would build for the charter market.

    • @SierraLimaOscar
      @SierraLimaOscar Před 3 lety +3

      It's a typical performance cruiser for the Med summer season (with posh tendencies). You don't spend much time in the cabin and you appreciate the performance in the normally lighter winds of the summer. This is the type of sailing yacht we used to spend our summers in where we would do 3 - 4 weeks sailing trips twice a year + as many extended 3 day weekends we could steal away.
      The build quality of the Elans is typically high, while the Humphrey designed hulls tend to do a good job.The Porsche styling is subjective - although I liked the galley position and layout and the lightness of the interior. I don't think I would go for the 3 cabin layout though.

Over built, solid as a rock, sea kindly in the heavy going with nary a creak nor squeak during heavy downwind & following seas. Sure, I don't love the lil sister's dayhead placement, but- other than that truly minor gripe- I would circumnavigate happily. Beautiful Blue Water boat. And with Battery/Solar technology so advanced, they should be the standard by now. Not a nasty Diesel!

    Lots of details done decently but to my mind not an overly attractive boat. Overall disappointment given the Porsche involvement and lack of any new innovation.

    When I was a child and realized that we couldn’t report the shocking circumstances we lived with, I added a camera to my arsenal of devices to prove what I could not say was true. Then, my equipment was stolen. Today, we can't always respond because we worked without compensation to do our job out of concern for our loved ones and most of our equipment is worn out. I love these innovations so much that I'm as well worn as the equipment that's being shelved, but it's wrong to speak of the learning place in a threatening way. So I've recruited new talent, and outfitted them with our latest application to continue to carry out the mission in a more dignified manner.

      Assuming you are saying Elan correctly, you may as well say Porsche correctly. Call the company, it is a two syllable word. Since they were involved in the design, they may appreciate you getting it right. Just saying. On a more serious note, there appears to be a lack of backrest at the helm stations. Would you find this to be an issue?

      One shouldn't be allowed to drive a Porsche, if you can't pronounce "Por-sha" correctly.
