  • In this fountain pen urban sketching tutorial I'll show you how I use my LAMY fountain pen to create a simple but effective urban sketch in just three simple steps.
I'll break down each step for beginners, so that you can understand what we're doing and why, and sketch along with me at the same time if you like.
This fountain pen urban sketching tutorial shows step by step techniques for beginner sketchers that you could use inside doing virtual urban sketching, but easily take outside as well if you want!
This scene is Eilean Donan castle - not the most urban sketch, but you voted for it ;)

I had a fountain lying around not knowing what to do with it, This video has brought me soo much joy in trying to replicate/learn drawing thrrough fountain pens, Instead of mindlessly consuming youtube for an hour I have spent my free time actually making a product, im a student so this is all I can afford right now, but thank you so much.

Loosening up has helped me enjoy drawing, sketching, painting and just plain old doodling again, I spent so long trying to make everything perfect like I do with photography it sucked the joy right out of the whole endeavour.
Being more loosey-goosey with it all has helped me get stuff done instead of being stuck hovering pen over paper, paralysed with the fear that what I'm about to mark will be less than perfect.

Love this demonstration so much, and I'm grateful for your gentle teaching. I think I'm starting to work more loosely. I'm glad you talked about tonal value. I needed that reminder. I used to stipple different values, but _man_ that was time consuming !!! Not only that, but my drawings have kind of a sterile look I think because it's hard to communicate information when every dot is uniform.

Hello. I Love your sketching style and have been giving your technique a try. I am a bit stuck by not having waterproof ink though. I have a Lamy Safari fountain pen, assorted pilot pens, and WN micro pens. I don't really know how to proceed with an ink drawing starting with ink because my pens definitely are not waterproof, although the MN pens would work the looseness is more difficult to achieve. So I start with pencil and use ink at the end. Do you have any better suggestions? I was wondering if there was a way to put indelible ink in the Lamy pen. Do they sell cartridges that can be filled with bottled ink? Just wondering. THX.

He used Platinum Carbon Black Ink .. This highly water-resistant, lightfast, pigment-based carbon ink is highly sought after by artists. Each bottle is filled with 60 cc of lush, black liquid ink made from the famous Platinum Co. of Japan..
This ink may still smear or bleed on certain papers when exposed to a lot of water. For best results, use it with an absorbent paper and allow it to dry for 24 hours before exposing the ink to water.
This ink contains pigment particles, which can cause clogging if allowed to dry out inside of a pen. When using this ink, we recommend giving your pen a good cleaning every 4 to 6 weeks, or if you don't plan on using the pen for a week or longer.
