Changing the Engine & Transmission Oil Pan Gaskets on a Ferrari 308

  • Our 1984 Ferrari 308 has a few maintenance issues that we need to take care of. First, the hood struts on the engine hood are blown so it won't stay up on it's own. Those are very simple to replace and reasonably cheap to purchase. Next we needed to change both the engine oil and the transmission oil. We also needed to replace the oil pan gaskets on both oil pans as they were leaking pretty heavily. We thought it would only take us a few hours but it ended up taking a few days as we ran into multiple complications. The worst of which was the oil dipstick tube fitting broke and we had to overnight one to replace it. We used about 9L of 15w-50 engine oil, and 4L of 75w-90 gearbox oil.

Can’t get enough of this 308 content! Looked like a pita operation with lift required; although not overly complicated just time consuming.

Yeah it was just frustrating but not super complex

Once you are inside the oil pan and transmission pan there are orings for the gear shaft that is wise to change: it will prevent the motor oil and the gear oil to mix when these orings will fail (and they will). The only thing is that I don't remember if it is an engine out work.

FWIW, you should probably also change the transfer case oil. That's on the driver side of the motor, big gears that move the power from the crank to the diff.

I’ve always wanted a 308 but the maintenance costs scare me.
This video is a great example of how there’s nothing easy about even basic repairs.
But I still want one 😂

Such a beautiful car, easily in my top 5 favorites. I was at a show today and a nice lady let me sit in her 308. Now I want one 😀

Thank you for finally wearing safety glasses. 😂 You guys should invest in a dry ice sprayer for cleaning the underside of these older cars.

A buddy ran LED light strips (like under cabinet lights) on the ledge of his 4 post lift tread plates to light up everything under the car. Works great and you rarely need a flashlight to see anything.

Great video. The dipstick really make the oil pan on the 308 a huge pain. Would have been good to have done the shifter seals while you were in there. The shift seals are a known leaker for sure. Also they make an updated baffle system for the oil pan that prevents starvation under cornering, so that would have been a good upgrade with the pan off since the pan is such a huge pain to remove. The pan on my 77 GTB is weeping a bit and I have been holding off on doing that job since I don’t have a lift. Really not looking forward to it. Btw be sure to check the oil as per the manual. Different year 308s have different procedures as there were different dipsticks. The oil is always meant to be checked hot but depending on year it’s either hot immediately after shutdown or 15 min after shutdown the difference is drain back from the filter. And the dipsticks are marked differently depending on the procedure. Definitely a good thing to check.

The idea of fixing your cars that you sell and showing it is pretty brilliant. People can know what you did before they buy them. I would to be in a position to buy one but I do sure enjoy watching you guys wrenching on them.

It's like you're getting a free PPI, that you can visually observe, on an exotic car. It shows transparency, on the dealers behalf, to potential buyers.

Yep, need to remove the dipstick tube (it's just a tube with swage fitting that threads on from the outside) *before* removing the oil pan cover. Then reinstall after the cover goes back on. Not a great design by Ferrari (one of many quirks on the 308). By the way, the engine castings on these cars are very porous, and the lower sumps and covers will sweat oil. You will still see some oil down there even with all new gaskets. Not a big deal. Some people go crazy trying to fix leaks but it's often pointless.

Great job! FYI, manual for a 4 valve calls for 10l (but rarely takes that much)oil Sint2000 sae10w50 originally but Mobil is a good choice! You could also use a Baldwin 253 oil filter which is red. Not to criticize but using a screw driver to pry the pans off is dicey as metal on metal fine scratches on the mating surfaces can create leaks! Otherwise great work.

You did all that but didn’t do the shift shaft seal on the front and in between the engine / trans. It is where most leaks come from on the 308’s, especially off the front of the block. I know you guys don’t normally do these cars but you missed the best while you’re in there.

If you like this car, then you really need to try a 328. Over 1400 engineering changes from the 308. Lightweight, superb drivers car. Really fun. Explains their current market value. I love a 348 with a Capristo exhaust, but its almost 500 lbs heavier than the 328.
