Origin Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Aaj let's talk about Aunjanue Ellis starrer Origin, adapted from Isabell Wilkerson's book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent, written and directed by Ava DuVernay. Through the real-life experiences of Isabelle, the film seems to assess caste around the world to help the American audience better comprehend the injustices around them. Honestly, and I'm not being facetious here, Nitesh Tiwari was attempting something similar with Bawaal: two people traveling to a part of the world they know little about, gaining the perspective that helps them become better citizens of their own countries. However, thankfully in Origin, while Ava takes the cinematic liberty of recreating many historical scenes, making us feel like we are in the room witnessing these horrific events unfold, she never inserts herself as a character in the story. It's true that we often assess others' misfortunes based on our own lived experiences and wonder how different our lives could have been if we were on the receiving end. This movie, though, allows the AUDIENCE to have that experience, as opposed to the characters in Bawaal, who actively participate in everything while we watch from the sidelines, excluded from the catharsis.
Again, when the movie is released, we will sit down and discuss it further, hopefully by the end of the year. Until then, can we please all marvel at the casting? How a literal non-actor, Professor Gaurav J. Pathania, resembles Dr. Ambedkar so closely! Seeing him in a gigantic close-up, smiling, paving the way for a free people in a newly independent nation riddled with problems, gave me goosebumps.

Ava DuVernay x Aunjanue Ellis? And that too, in a narrative inspired by Isabel Wilkinson’s book? What a Collab! 👏🏽
You need to just type dalit killed in _ states in search engines you will know what's going on in india , slavery and forced labour is very prevalent in rural india .
One of thee most anti-Black countries in the world.
@@ndfiboefbye Do you have any idea what you're going on about?? Lol
You keep copying and pasting the same asinine generalization to ppl you don't agree with.
Ever okay, Sparky?? ;)
What a beautifully articulated review for what seems like a very important movie for our times. No wonder Dr. Yenge responded. You're bloody good at your work Sucharita. Thank you for doing what you do with such shiddat! ❤
Many thanks!
The last epilogue line of burning books and facism . That was amazing 🔥
One of my favorites from this year's TIFF. So so good.
It was such a good movie! I saw it this weekend! really eye-opening
I hope it is made available in indian theatre. I would love to see it on big screen. Looking forward to more from tiff !
Even if not youll be able to watch online I hope!
Hii I'm form India
How can watch origin movie in my mobile phone
Please tell me😢
Caste is a painful book. I'm so excited for the film
It’s so nice to see updates on TIFF from the channel! 👏🏽
Wish this film also highlighted the "almost" caste system that is part of the Muslim communities but I don't blame Ava because a lot of Muslims just start shouting "islamophobia" at whatever bad thing is shown about their community. Cannot wait to watch.
PS. I am Muslim myself that's why i brought this up.
A remarkably insightful review and a truly perceptive summary. Thank you, Sucharita !
I was looking for a review of Origin from an Indian and you were the only one. It is released in theatres now for wider audience please release a detailed review video.
Thanks to origin movie director, because she made movie on dr br Ambedkar
"chosen to ignore"??? It's built into the system we all live in. No one ignores it
Fun Fact: Gurinder Chadha made ‘What’s Cooking?’ and Ava DuVernay was part of the PR (if I’m not mistaken)
oh wow! yeh kahaan se pata chala?
