If there are rules to this hobby then I’m breaking all of them. I was that kid who could recite all the trivia about my favorite artists growing up. I turned 64 today and not so much anymore, now it’s all about filling holes in my collection and exploring genres I ignored as a teen. Deep diving into the blues right now while beginning to explore jazz as I just inherited about 100 or so records. Happy hunting!
There are no rules. Im just silly. 🤪
@@PiecesofVinyl Not a great selling tool to tell people you have played your records with a shitty needle and then say you want any of these?Just saying.
Great and fun video. With almost any hobby/love/passion it is like jumping into an ocean. You jump in and you can see some cool things, discover beautiful things, learn sooooo much....and still understand that 90% of things out there you will never see/learn in one life time lol. To me not knowing and STILL learning about stuff like you mentioned 20+ years into your passion is what keeps is fun. Keeps something new around each corner. For us to be able to say after decades of doing something "Oh, I didn't know that" is a blessing. :) Some of my favorites are hearing songs and going "OMG, I didn't know XYZ was cover song" or "I had no idea that beat was taken from this old soul song" or things like that. It keeps it cool and fun. Like what would be more cool than if some buddies sent you over a few of those standards you mentioned.
Agree with what you’re saying regarding some record stores charging silly prices. I get that’s it tough, but very few people are willing to pay more simply to keep them in business. It’s not the way forward. It won’t end well if the trend continues.
I would advise selling your records on the channel. I have seen items such as records, baseball cards, and antiques sold on people's CZcams channels. You have the subs, the audience, and the channel already. And, if you needed help, since I'm in Philly myself, I'd even offer to help!
I might end up doing this.
In my opinion, a record show is like walking into a store and just adding 30 percent to a price. Maybe you can find unusual records but with the intra-nets you can pretty much find what you want. I waited in line at a record store day for hours and the store didn’t have the copy I even wanted, went home, logged into discogs and got that copy delivered to my door, again, maybe it’s lazy.
It is fun to wait in line for RSD - not many other experiences like that anymore. That said - you can almost always find stuff cheaper the days after.
I am in the same boat with about half of these you stated. Its impossible to know everything about records and music and history. Its what keeps me interested in music/records and the vinyl community. I never stop learning. There is ALWAYS something out there that I can learn.
You should totally do an auction. I saw about 5 records I would buy from you! Haha!
I think I might - have a livestream - hang out and sell some records.
Thais was nice video. Would be great to see more confessions videos form VC people. :)
Ah, this is great 👍🏼 I really like your confessions
Very refreshing video more then anything ngl, I also had a bunch of folded paper as a make shift foot for my old Numark turntable for about 8 years 😂
I’d be interested in that Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar record 🙋♂️🙋♂️
Also only found out about matrix’s etc till I started helping out in a local record shop 😅
-Rocco, dude….ive never listened to Aja all the way through either. Not necessarily interested to either…lol
-I’ve never gone to a RSD. Still been able to get what I was looking for later.
-There will always be people who know more than me, and instead of being intimidated, I just ask.
-I just got into jazz in the past 6-7 yrs or so.
You’re not alone, man, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions. Part of the fun is learning new sh*t anyway. 👍🔊😊🎶
Right on. Good to know we are not alone!
I'm literally doing some things you listed right now!😄 Just got back into vinyl after about 30 or so years of just cds and streaming.
If you lived closer to me (I'm in Arkansas) I would probably buy most of the albums you showed.
Do what you want (I know I will). Liked and subscribed.👍🏼
Thanks for subscribing. Good luck getting back into the hobby!
Awesome video man! Watched your videos here and there as they popped up, but this one made me sub right away. I related to way too much of this!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video fantastic channel❤
Fantastic comment!
Believe me, you're not an idiot. Cheers from germany! ❤
Thanks! My wife would disagree!
No worries because....
1) well, I had Donald Fagen's 'Nightfly' before I had 'Aja'.
2) what is a stylus? LOL
3) most record shows are overrated
4) my stack of vinyl I want to get rid of is also growing
5) every day is Record Store Day
6) bad records may have a sentimental value too, so...
7) who is Steve Hoffman?
8) i spend 3 hrs a day on the train to and from work, so digital is essential to my music hobby. but some albums are also reserverd for 'first listen on vinyl' for sure
9) you can't know and listen to everything, even ellington or parker or the temptations
😂
Everyday is record store day!
Never been to a record show either. Want to check one out sooner or later. I’m in York County, PA and I think most for me are in/near Harrisburg.
Let me know if you hear of any in that area.
I commend you for not hear Aja all the way through!!! I’ll never understand the hero worship that band is getting in the VC these days I always felt they were great musicians but the music was sterile too perfect Studio musicians not a real band Now I guess it’s hip to love Steely Dan Maybe the fascination with Chads UHQRs has a lot to do with all this Steely Dan stuff
They have down a good job of using jazz musicians and getting them into the mainstream. I can appreciate their production quality but I don’t fawn over them. I’m more into the Headhunters or Return to Forever for that kind of stuff anyways.
I don't go to record shows anymore. Too crowded and there really aren't any good deals. I actually think some people raise the prices. I avoid RSD for similar reasons. I had a large collection to get rid of and finally just sold it to my local store. While you'll only get 30% or so of retail the ease is worth it. I decided I didn't want to deal with the headache of mailing, packaging, etc. I wouldn't worry about any of the things on your list. Just enjoy the ride.
I have actually been considering that. Just packing it all up and taking it to the local shop. I could probably at least some good trade in value.
You showed a large number of vinyl that you would like to sell. I would be interested in knowing how many pieces of vinyl you own.
Currently according to Discogs 1,482…none of those shown in this video are part of that. Or I have a copy of that record in the collection. And …Discogs counts all the box sets as one record. So technically there are more there too. Too many and yet not enough!
@@PiecesofVinyl I started collecting in 2020 mostly because I didn’t have the space before then and now I think I pick too carefully so I talk myself out of a lot of the vinyl that I am tempted to buy. I feel like they are supposed to pass some sort of test before they become part of my collection. I envy that you try to listen on vinyl first I think I tend to be the opposite. I hope to someday switch that. Great channel!! I always enjoy your videos.
As to selling your records. People will come to your home and review your collection, and make you an offer. Easy peazy. 😉
Very true!
Give a listen to the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans album, and the John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman album.
I plan on getting that OJC of Evans and Bennett
Here are some of mine brotha man.
1. I grew up with my dad playing soul, funk, and gospel music, so I couldn't tell you a Beatles song, or a pink floyd song either. Have I heard a song from one of these bands. Probably, but I don't know.
2. I just started collecting 3, 4 years ago after my wife bought me a volume from the east side story volumes for Christmas, and I had to have all 12 volumes so I just had to continue to get all 12 volumes, and it has never stopped since then.
3. I still have a lot of cd's in a cd book or whatever you call it in my truck ( all the guys at work laugh at me for it lol)
4. This year last month was the 1st record store day I've ever participated in. Normally I wait till the next day, and order from plaid room records. I still did order 1 record from Plaid Room this RSD because I love and support them.
5. Ive never been to a convention either, and we just had one here in Colorado Springs a week ago. But it was my oldest birthday and all my money went there lol. I'd still love to go to one though.
6. I feel like I haven't even touched Jazz. The only jazz I have in my collection is a couple Seth Macfarlane records, and a Fats Waller box set. Fun fact Darren Waller (TE) who use to play for the greatest team ever RAIDEEEEEERS!!!!! lol now he plays for the Giants, is Fats Waller's great grandson.
These are my confections brotha man. Don't judge me to harshly lol. Awesome video as always, and much love to you brotha man.
I won’t judge you for being a raiders fan😜 I’m sure the people of Denver give you shit enough about it!
@@PiecesofVinyl that they do 🤣. When I'm at the games and the Raiders win I celebrate at home and leave the stadium quietly lol. Donkey fans can be A$sholeos lol
I catalog my vinyl with spotify (and discogs of course). Then I can kind of pull up any album I own in my car. It's silly.
Selling records on whatnot is what I'm going to do.
Asia??? What's that? I like that you collect what you enjoy with focus on current artists as opposed to "must have" records. I do the same. -- I like some punk, but don't have never mind ...; heard it, know it, but don't think it is that good anyway. -- Agree: RSD is mostly a boring let-down. -- I don't own a single Beatles record, as I find them blah. Same for PF/Dark side of the yawn [sorry]. Throwing Snow, Glaring, Martial Canterel, Laibach, Eyless in Gaza, Fad Gadget, L'Avenir are much more interesting. -- I have bought digital-only releases and tapes (Child of Night, If, Ix-Ex-Splue, Flesh of the Morning, Mortal Boy)!
I stopped going to shows a few years ago, people are too pushy now. Elbowed a guy in the gut hard when he reached in from behind to flip through the same bin that I was.
Gotta be careful!
In my opinion The Eagles, Grateful Dead and Steeley Dan are all over rated. Sure they have some good songs here and there but in terms of start to finish albums, not for me.
I had a Portuguese pressing of Aja and I thought it was just plain boring. I'm curious to hear the UHQR but I'm not gonna buy it based on what I've heard in the past.
Curious, why you are selling the VMP Master of Reality?
I don’t like the eagles (the band) at all. The BS has a small scuff on side 2 - not that bad at all.
Everyone, every single person, is ready for John Coltrane.
I agree.
I have never listened to Dark Side of the Moon proper or in full..😅..never own it on CD or Vinyl either... it's a good album..but i can't stand majority of the overrated albums which critics are always ass kissing..though that newly release of Clear Vinyl with engrave for Dark Side is very tempting.. anyone can advise if that is a good one to pick.. best regards.
I am not sure to that pressing - but the normal 2016 reissue sounds just fine and it’s not expensive. Definitely one to listen to with headphones all the way through at least once.
Love your channel… I really do, but to drop that cash on an album you’ve never heard seems Ludacris! Stream it first😂 keep doing what you do! Enjoy your videos so much!
If you are taking about AJA - I have heard like 80% of it. So if I did get that it wouldn’t be totally blind. I’m a huge fan of Steve Gadd and Bernard Purdie
@@PiecesofVinyl ahhhhhhh…. I may have misunderstood… Carry-on!😂
I also have never heard aja from start to finish and i intend to keep it that way.
I love throwing shade at audiophiles about that album and Steely Dan in general
I order all my vinyls online. I’ve not been to a record shop to purchase any of my 100 plus vinyls.
So basically you're like me, but with more records collected ;-)
Great minds thing alike!
I’m sure you know a lot of things that others don’t.
Thanks! I do know that listening to more music is all the matters!
Aja is ok but it’s not even the best Steely Dan record. BTW, I love movies and have never seen The Godfather start to finish. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s a good movie. 1&2. 3 loses it.
