QUESTION: Mia in what ways are the people in Hawaii different from Portugal ?
Aloha e olá mia. My great grandmother was half Hawaiian and half Portuguese and knew some Portuguese. My great grandpa was also Portuguese.my family last names were Matos and goeas. She taught me a few words like Va a dormir, ai meu deus, ai Jesus, em nome do pão do filho e do Espírito Santo amim, mais ficar, and other words/ Fraser’s that I can’t remember. My family also ate bacalhau as well and there are other Portuguese food that are common in the islands. There is a church on O’ahu called Punchbowl Holy Ghost church which was built in the 1880s by the Portuguese immigrants. Now there will be a a Portuguese cultural center that will be built to help us reconnect with our roots. I am currently studying Portuguese because it is a beautiful language and to reconnect and hope to visit Portugal especially Madeira since that is were my family came from. I’m glad you had a wonderful time in Hawaii!
100 percent from Madeira! Those phrases are still very much used on daily basis back home in Madeira by many Marias.

There's a saying in Madeira, if all Madeirans came home, Madeira would sink.
Mia, thank you for this. We are expat Americans now living in Porto. My wife's grandmother was Portuguese from Maui. Her family had migrated from Madeira and Galicia in the 1800's. and worked in the sugar industry. She grew up in "Codfish Camp" in Makawao. A great little museum on the history of sugar cane in Maui is the Alexander and Baldwin Sugar Museum. We also enjoy your Good Morning Portugal appearances.

I'm 4th generation Portuguese. I live on Oahu. Teixeira is my maiden name. My great grandparents only spoke Portuguese, so did my grandmother. My grandmothers maiden name is Ferreira. But they never taught us their language. 😔It's such a beautiful language.
As a full fledge Portuguese I didn't even know about our legacy in Hawaii. First x I went to Hawaii and saw Portuguese Chouriço on the MCD's breakfast menu, I almost flipped!🤯 Then I started seeing Fernandes , Silva's and all kinds of Portuguese last names. I was blown away! I looked for Portuguese surnames in the telephone book (remember those?) pages and pages of Portuguese names! The same in Mauii, even in the Big Island I had malasadas! 😱So, so proud of our legacy all over the world, especially Hawaii!❤️🇵🇹 Big hug to all Hawaiian Portuguese!
Hi Mia! I am from Hawaii and I'm so thrilled that you were able to visit the place I call home. The Portuguse culture is very much a part of Hawaii's culture. Some of the older population still speak português. I live in Los Angeles now, though, most of my family still remains in Hawaii. So, I may know a little about missing family, too. I have this Portuguese/Hawaii connection, although a bit unusual. My grandmother's family emigrated from Northern Portugal on the last ship (1912) to send Portuguese to Hawaii. They worked on Maui seven years then went to California.

@@MiaEsmerizAcademy Hi Mia, a few other interesting points: 1- there were also several Spanish families on the ship. They fought with the Portuguese so much that when the boat reached Honolulu, the federal marshalls boarded to bring peace before they let the passengers off. LOL. 2- There is a brand of sweet bread (King's Hawaiian) that is quite popular in the states, it's a knock off of Portuguese sweet bread. 3- They serve Portuguese sausage at the McDonalds in Hawaii.

Olà Mia! What a great video! I grew up in Honolulu and currently studying Portuguese. I had to stop your video when you spoke of Malasadas/pao doce to look back at my photos of Leonard’s bakery. Sou do Havai e vivo a poucas horas da fronteira portuguesa aqui na Galiza, adoro o Porto, é uma cidade maravilhosa. Tenho família que é parte portuguesa e a minha bisavó que é órfã pode ser portuguesa. Monja sobremesa favorita é malassadas .

Hi Mia, I am portuguese and we vacation to Hawaii every year. When we first went there I couldn't believe that there was portuguese influence there. I love the malasadas lol. Beautiful island of oahu. Love your video. My parents are from Carragal de Sal. They come to visit me in the USA twice a year. If they weren't in their 80's, im sure they would go to Hawaii for the fruit and flowers 🌴🌺

Adorei o vídeo! No Japão há também alguma influência da cultura portuguesa. Creio que por conta de navegadores e jesuítas do século XVI, algumas palavras e doces são muito similares aos de Portugal.

Excellent video, thanks. The braguinha is somehow the Portuguese mother of the Hawaian ukulele. I heard the Hawaians were impressed by the music produced by this instrument which got there with some workers from Madeira. The difference is mainly that the braguinha has steel strings and a stronger body while the uke has nylon strings. They are also tuned differently.

Linguiça portuguesa também é muito comum lá. "Poh-tuh-gee sausage" com arroz é vendido em muitos restaurantes e servido em muitas casas!

She got the Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice for breakfast, and she was not well the rest of the day. Over 35 years later when we were in Porto and Lisbon, she wouldn't eat anything that looked like sausage until nearly our last day, when we both had a cachorrinho at Gazela. 🤣🤣

Lindo vídeo! Você diz Havai. No Brazil, eu vi Havaí e Avaí. Eu sou brasileira e achava que não haveria diferenças como essa na pronúncia do nome de um país, por exemplo.
Pois, eu também vi que no Brasil se diz Havaí ☺️ na verdade, essa forma até e mais correta do que a do Português de Portugal, porque em havaiano se diz mais assim também ☺️

Considero que o conteúdo deste vídeo é tão útil como prático, e por isso acho que você deveria fazer um vídeo referente à influência portuguesa na única ex-colônia de Portugal na América do Sul, que é a República Federativa do Brasil. Nesse país, os portugueses colonizaram o território e o português chegou a ser a língua oficial; por essa razão, já que você é portuguesa, considero, como uma sugestão apenas, que você seja capaz de ensinar a gente como foi o processo da colonização e da independência da primeira potência econômica da América Latina.
Uh o Português ainda é a língua oficial do Brasil, não sei do que está a falar 😅 Você fala do Brasil como se fosse completamente removido de Portugal, o que nem é perto da verdade. Portugal e Brasil têm uma relação extremamente próxima, sendo 2.5% a percentagem de Brasileiros a viver em Portugal. Na verdade, sou Português e metade dos meus amigos são Brasileiros.
Seria impossível incluir todas as influências Portuguesas no Brasil. Seria o mesmo que pedir um vídeo com todas as influências Espanholas no México.
Interessante a forma como vcs portugueses pronunciam o nome desse estado dos EUA. Aqui no BR a gnt fala Havaí (com a tônica no I (não à toa que tem o acento hehe!)). Nunca pensei q poderia ser "Havai" (sem o acento e pronunciando o AI feito um ditongo)
Pois. Na verdade, a vossa forma de dizer é até mais “correta”, se pensarmos como os próprios havaianos pronunciam o nome Hawai’i. Mas, bem, é mesmo assim que dizemos ☺️
