What French Revolution Hygiene Was Like
Vložit
- čas přidán 19. 06. 2024
- Today, we think of 1700s-era France as a period of unwashed and unparalleled squalor. While this is partially a misconception, it does contain some truth. During the 18th century, people's attitudes towards personal hygiene were laxer than they are today, for a variety of reasons.
In a world without the hundreds of modern conveniences we take for granted, personal hygiene was expensive and logistically difficult to maintain. Besides that, experts of the time believed that being too clean was unhealthy. Towards the end of the century, medical and scientific advances showed the benefits of cleanliness, and hygiene was gradually understood to be beneficial. Despite this, cleanliness was still a luxury reserved for the elite.

Marie Antoinette took a bath on a regularly (though not every day) causing shock at the French court and courtiers having thought this habit was appalling. No wonder she was hatred from the beginning. (As a daughter of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa she grew up with the knowledge that personal cleanliness is something necessary. She also got shocked that there was no bathroom at the French royal palaces -as far as I know)
she was doomed from the start. no matter what she did during her reign, they never would have liked and/or accepted her. even if the revolution didn't happen and she remained queen for longer, nothing she could have done would have made up for the fact she was an absolute foreigner in that court. it's unfortunate, really, because i feel as though she could have contributed a lot. she was a smart and clever young woman.
The girl was campaigned, and conspired, against; back-stabbed and framed. She would have been very well advised to listen to her family

@@oof8421 More incomplete or unsympathetic. We're all just getting on our high horses because we have different cultural norms, medical practices, city infrastructure, and access to transportation? It's not like we individually can take credit for the fact that our predecessors made it possible for most people to access clean water on demand. But I guess if we want to feel all morally superior because we're so modern and civilized now there's no one to stop us. May the future generations look at the limited documentation we leave behind and make kinder generalizations about what idiots we were.
Lol they more then likely get their information from Google then add their opinions
I actually kind of agree with this. It seems like these people try their hardest to make things seem as absolutely awful as humanly possible in order to entertain/disgust their viewers. Let’s be honest…if things were *this* bad, the odor of rotting vagina would’ve swept across Europe, everyone would’ve turned green and subsequently died. I can imagine someone making a “video essay” of sorts 300 years from now where they talk about the horrors of wiping with dry paper, using chemotherapy to treat cancer and pumping the atmosphere full of CO2. Are these things issues of varying consequence? Yes…but we aren’t all crawling around, begging for death. Right now, there are parts of India that have hygienic standards similar to those in this video due to incredible overpopulation/poverty. Sure, those places are pretty rugged by western standards but people are surviving nonetheless…
@@RebelGun4 Not feeling morally superior at all. Clearly most all these folks were suffering and living in misery, whether they accepted it or not, it was their life. Clean water, clothing and food were considered a great luxury especially when having gone without it. We definitely have our problems today, although thank God we have means to wash, eat clean food and basic sanitation.

Chucking a chamber pot out the window was known as "Gardyloo" in Scotland, from the French "Gardez l'eau" or "Watch out for the water!"
A visitor to Edinburgh, the Scottish capital noted that, at 10PM, when most of the ordure was chucked out, everyone in the Inn he was staying in, had a twist of brown paper, which they took out and burned. The acrid smoke covering up the smell of effluvia!

It could be worse, like muslims washing their butts only with the left hand even today lol and not using tooth paste to brush their teeth with a wooden stick.
Lol, talk for yourself. Muslims wash with left hand "with water" not with mere toilet paper and think it's cleaned. And that wooden stick was being used to "clean" the teeth even before brushes were invented. And Muslims have to wash their face, hand and water 5 times a day "with water". You can't be serious commenting about Muslims under this kind of video😂😂

You forgot to mention that ALL ladies' underwear was crotchless so that one could simply slide a chamber pot under a dress with a huge side hoop skirt (paniers). Having no crotch made menstrual care really difficult; many women wore "menstrual aprons" which tied around the waist and had several layers of linen and other soft absorbent fabrics in different layers for use.
But women didn't menstruate as often then as now; why? Because of childbirth and nursing.
