- 1500 LIVE Ladybugs! Aphid Control with Beneficial Insects | How to release ladybugs | Guten Yardening
In this video we show you how we release and use lady bugs as an all-natural, organic method of removing an aphid infestation.
One biological control that you can use against garden pests like aphids, fruit flies, and mites is to bring in ladybugs (ladybirds) to your garden or growing space.
These soldier insects, as some call them, feed primarily on these soft-bodied pests, and can help to eliminate infestations on your vegetables.
We use a multi-pronged all-natural, organic approach when dealing with pests in our garden. In addition to the natural pesticide Diatomaceous Earth (DE), we are adding these ladybugs on to our vegetables. They are an addition we have made to our grow tent previously (several years ago) when we had an aphid issue, and we had a great deal of success then, so we expect nothing less now.
We purchased 1500 ladybugs and allowed them to warm up for a few minutes after removing them from the refrigerator where we stored them upon arrival in the mail. When they arrive, they are hibernating and moving very little. After only a few minutes, they spring “back to life” and begin moving around quickly within their packaging. It is important to place them in your garden as quickly as possible and release them there once you have removed them from the refrigerator.
Because we are releasing these insects indoors in a confined growing space, we are not concerned with them flying away, but please note, if you are releasing them in your outdoor garden, you should release them at night instead of during the day so they do not fly away immediately.
The ladybugs should stay around and do their job as long as there is food available to them, like those pesky aphids that they love so much.

I love to see ladybirds, very cute and extremely useful 👍
My youngest daughter want to make a ladybird her pet, so I think she agrees completely! :D Yes, they are incredibly useful and are already doing great work. I hope all is well! Have a great week!
@@GutenGardening haha risky pet to keep as they have a surprisingly vicious bite, perhaps you've never experienced one, you'd be quite surprised 🤪🤪
That is a lot of ladybugs for an indoor grow space! they should make quick work of the aphids. They would be convergent lady beetle, (Hippodamia convergens). It would be interesting to see if there was a way to propagate them on a small scale. The DE certainly does look like it helped but your aphid problems should be over now!
They have been feeding so well in there. :) And, they are propagating for sure, but I will save the evidence of that for a later video. :D The combo of the DE and the ladybugs has really done the trick.
That was a horror movie for aphids 😂 ladybugs are gangsters 🐞
Ha! I love that description. It put a picture of an old school movie about giant ants in my mind. :D :D Ladybugs are tough for sure! Have a fantastic week! :)
I don't like most insects but I love ladybugs 🐞 and bees!
10/10 agreed! Ladybugs and bees are the best. Attracting bees is going to be a big focus of ours coming into our next outdoor growing season. :) Have a fantastic week!
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Getting caught up on videos. This is awesome, lady bugs are so cool to watch working! They should do a great job on those aphids!
We did some up close watching of them at work, and it was really amazing. Once they get started, they are very fast eaters. :D
@@GutenGardening They are efficient eaters. 😁
Super
Thank you! They will get the job done. :D
Hopefully the ladybirds finish of the aphids for yall.🙂
They have been pretty hard at work for the first couple of days, and I definitely think they are already making a difference. We will keep any eye on them and keep everyone updated. :) Have a great day!
I hate aphids, drives me crazy! lol You will have to give us an update on the process. Thank you.
We will definitely keep you all updated. :) They are one of our absolute least favorite pests. Thank you so much for watching, and have a great day!
I ordered some ladybugs before I realized that they take ladybugs out of the wild which destroys the environment in unforseeable ways. In edition ladybugs are migratory so they just leave. When my ladybugs arrived half were dead, I basically paid to kill and kidnap ladybugs from Colorado….
i've read that callendula is a trap plant that is a magnet for aphids. do you have opinion about trap plants?
I have read the same thing about calendula, and that it attracts other helpful insects as well. We have not experimented much with trap plants (other than using marigolds at strategic places within our garden for their benefits), but I like the idea of using these plants as another natural method of drawing some of these pests away from our main plants, so that may be something we consider for the upcoming season's garden. Thank you for the suggestion! Have a great week!
Guten Abend, vielen Dank für das tolle Video 🔔💖👍 , wünsche dir einen schönen Abend, see you later, pass auf dich auf & bleib gesund. Liebe Grüße Siggi & Marianne❤️
Hallo Siggi & Marianne. Prost!
Doesn't DE kill the lady bugs if you have residual on your plants still?
Yes, it can do that, but typically after a few waterings or rain, there isn't that much left. We definitely wouldn't want to put the DE on and release the ladybugs at the same time.
Awesome method!!! Who knew????
This is the second time we have used them against aphids. The last time (two years ago) they wiped out the entire aphid population in a very short time. It was so cool to see. :)
@@GutenGardening I wonder if ladybugs would also consume fungus gnats ???
They absolutely do. :)
Does the DE hurt the ladybugs?
We have only applied DE in our indoor Garden and the application was done before introducing the ladybugs. In our hands, we did not notice any problems with their ability to thrive under these conditions.
