If you have audio that is too quiet, this video will show you how to bump the audio levels up. It uses a combination of the regular volume control and a "Gain" audio effect.
I do audio mostly now a days, and you sir just saved my life. A buddy of mine and I shot some footage a weekend ago I didn't realize I had the audio low. Thanks for your help.
Thanks so much for the video! For some reason, after I dragged the gains on to my video clip, I wasnt able to see the option for me to change the level of gain in the upper right hand side.
great that's a good one, couple of others that might have other implications, but we all like to tweak audio is increasing ambient / direct slider in the Advanced setting, I also reduce the original/decoded slider to about zero or slightly in the negative range. I also switch Pan Mode to dialogue and bring that surround panner toward the center. how do you feel about the automatic audio analysis? I just have not had much luck with it, either too loud or tinny, rather do what you suggested instead of using the analysis tool thanks
hi - thank you for this video. can you please tell me how to make the audio on several clips all equal? i have 5 clips but the audio is high on some but low on others. is there a way to make every clips audio sound equal? i am a beginner so i am still learning how to use fcpx
Is there any other way to do this without detaching Audio from Video? When I drop the gain effect to video, the Gain does not show up on inspector unless the audio is detached from Video? Please let me know if there is a way. Thank you!
In professional audio recordings we use a compressor and limiter to get that maximum level and punch out of our audio. Both of these effects have a gain knob built in but incorporate the dynamics which give the audio a smoother and in your face sound quality. The compressor basically compresses all the high peaks of the audio which prevent the level from getting as loud as it can be. Normally, by just raising the gain, the softer portions of the audio, or the valleys, never get boosted because the highest peak will set the overall level. Compressing the peaks allows the valleys of the audio wave to increase. The limiter basically does what it says, it limits the audio from going past a particular level threshold by attenuating the volume when the audio wave gets close to that limit. When the limit threshold is lowered, the gain is automatically raised and the audio gets louder without distorting. I can see you have a limiter in the effects bin, I'm sure there's also a compressor.
Great comment, thank you. Yes, I have other videos (though not on CZcams) that demonstrate how to use the Compressor and Limiter in Final Cut Pro X. I use them quite a bit myself. :)
While you did an excellent job solving this problem is 2014, I'm trying to solve this problem in 2020 and it seems very different. I have a low recording of a soft spoken woman, with light HVAC happen in the background, I'm working on a 4k desktop and the footage is shot in 6K. Some of the features in final cut have fixed it, but I'm told that the volume is still too low as the person hiring me has to max out their volume to hear, which is also what I had to do to edit, nothing seems to get the level of perfection that the person hiring me is looking for, they will never admit that the audio was recorded too low and from the footage you can see that the lapel mic is stuffed down the woman's shirt and not pointing towards her mouth. I'm at a loss for what I should do, I feel like quitting the job cause the person who hired me is also very condescending and I've put up with it for a long time on other jobs with them as well.
hi~ your explanation is very clear! thank you very much i also noticed that ur videos are marked with number . this one is 260, i wonder where can i watch the rest? cuz i click in ur channel and i didn't see the rest except a few videos marked with number here or there, please advice. thank you very much :)
Yes, I only put a few of my videos on CZcams. There are about 300 videos on my site here: www.izzyvideo.com (and most of them are for Izzy Video Members), but there are plenty you can watch there for free if you'd like.
THank you so much, i wasn't looking for anything in specific, just got started editing and want to see what is available. :) thanks for your reply and tutorial XD

Thanks Izzy. Can you help with cases where the audio plays well in the board but when exported no audio could be heard.
Needed that - cheers.
