Congratulations on acquiring this Graf von Faber-Castell Classic ebony. The "Graf" part is the English aristocracy equivalent of the title, Count. And yes, there is a real Graf von Faber-Castell living today who is in charge of the company, which was founded in the mid-1700s. It's still family-owned, so it isn't like Pelikan, which is owned by a Malaysian financial conglomerate, or other pen brands that are now owned by larger holding companies. And there is much more hand work to the making of Graf pens than most other major pen brands today, including the fact they make their own in-house nibs. Most companies now outsource their nibs from one or two mass manufacturers. Expensive, yes, but I don't think their Classic line is over-priced when you consider all these factors. This is not an acrylic (plastic) molded body pen like Pelikan, Sailor or Montblanc. These are all good pens, but Montblanc in particular is far more over-priced than the Classic line of Graf von Faber-Castell.
You got a very good price on yours, and I agree most people's wallets (including mine) do better on the "pre-loved or pre-owned" market. I'm fortunate in acquiring three pristine Grafs in just this way. I prefer medium nibs, as Fine or Extra Fine nibs I find to have more feedback. I think the more you use Graf nibs, the more you appreciate them: no hard starts, no skips, etc. I think many people grip fountain pens a bit too firmly. The weighting and balance of a Graf Classic allow the pen to just rest between the back of the thumb and forefinger and let the nib do the writing, not the pressure on the front end of thumb and forefinger.
The regular Faber-Castell pens are more affordable and well-made. Their steel nibs are really nice, showing what a good steel nib can do. You mentioned being drawn to the e-Motion line, and I like them too. I own several and they are very well made, and write perfectly. Enjoy your Graf, and try out the Faber-Castell e-Motion line.
Thanks for sharing you're a cello player. Wonderful instrument!

This is excellent information about Faber. Is this true of all their pens, or only the Graf line?

A sad fact about Pelikan. I did not know but it does not surprise me!

Graf is a German aristocratic title, not English. It is the equivalent rank to the British intermediate title of Earl, above a viscount but below a Marquis or Duke.

Really great review! This pen's concave section grip allows for a polished metal finish, otherwise it would definitely be a slippery hold. The Lamy Studio is case in point and I would not touch the standard variation of that pen. I do love seeing high-end pens that stray from the classic cigar shape and I find Graf von Faber-Castell pens to be very elegant and handsome; I would definitely choose Graf pens over something like a Pelikan or Montblanc.

Perhaps I’m unusually fortunate. I have four GVFC Classic pens, all in pernambuco wood and sterling silver.

Great review. I picked up my first GVFC pen this week. The tamitio I bought has a steel EF nib. I was so impressed with it I started looking at their classic line and I think I found my next pen.

I own also a Graf von Faber-Castell Classic, which is the whole platinized model, with an M nib. The nib has a special feeling when you write. It is for sure an excellent choice that you possess there! Have fun with it!

The two Fabers I have with steel nibs perform flawlessly.

Cool review. Love the part about you being a cello player. I bought this pen a few years back in the Grenadilla wood since I'm a clarinet player and they're made from grenadilla. Cool to see someone else able to make a similar connection. I actually ended up selling mine to another CZcams reviewer, The Inked Well, and I bought the Classic Anello, the one with the rings/sections, also in grenadilla. It's still one of my favorite pens. Enjoy yours!

They also do a GVFC Classic in Pernambuco wood, which is used for string instrument bows.

Yes, definitely a case of waiting for a sale.
Fortunatey they are on sale here at the moment $200.00 discount. Your video has helped me to decide to buy.
Rolex, 'not the best Swiss watch sold at a premium prices and backed up with heavy niche marketing'? That would be a Montblanc, surely. ;)
Thank you. A very well done review. Very informative and excellent production.

Your pen seems to be manufactured in 2019 and therefore lacks the spring in the converter that they later added. If your are experiencing ink flow issues after writing for longer periods of time this is the part you have to look at. I have one titanium Anello and since it was old stock it came with a converter without the spring. After writing for a couple of minutes I experienced an ink flow that got worse and worse until it stoped writing. When I screwed it open I saw that the ink was stuck in the upper part of the converter. I then bought the updated converter and since that the pen writes flawlessly. I had the same issue with Lamy converters, however the have not updated their design yet.
As to filling it I hate a dirty nib so i take the converter out.
My Graf von Faber-Castell pens write like a dream. Until I bought it I thought that my Lamy pen was a nice writer. The absolutely flawless nib on the GvFC blew away any other pen I owned before that one.
Expensive? Absolutely. However you can often find a great deal for a used one, since the design is very unique and not everybody likes it. The build quality is perfect, the threads are metal where they should be and plastic in the cap to not scratch the pen while opening closing it.
The clip on the classic line is also worth mentioning, since it is very solid and spring loaded. It is really a pen for a lifetime.
If there is any problem with it the customer service is also extremely good

I like the pen and maybe in future I would like the Pernambuco one, but I really don't like the feeder... It works which is important, but it looks the feeder of a cheap fountain pen and not in line with the very high quality of the other materials

8:19 Faber-Castell and GvFC nibs are made by Bock.

If this pen is not worth $500-$600 dollars, than what pens in your opinion are worth in this price range?

    • @riccardoconti3344
      @riccardoconti3344 Před 6 měsíci

Just my own opinion, but 99% of the luxury pens are much more expensive than their value and very overpriced... The most funny are the ones that say that they are made with "precious resin" which is just a more fancy polymer (plastic) but it is nothing more than that and certainly nothing very precious. At least in some cases like this one there are really more precious materials or complex production procedures, which can a bit more justify the price, but we are still speaking of no sense luxury. For that reason I am not buying anything new at the moment, maybe in future I would like to buy this GvFC. But a lot of the luxury pens are just good quality plastic pieces in my opinion.

They have lots of finishes available. They have a metal one as well as a plastic/resin one (called the Guilloche) if that works better for you!
