- The two elderly Wisconsin tourists killed after lightning struck near the nation's capital have been identified as 76-year-old James Mueller and his 75-year-old wife, Donna Mueller. It's believed they were hiding from the storm under a tree when lightning struck. Massive lighting bolts were seen striking a tree in Lafayette Square. Two other people were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries sustained in the weather.
There is something so bittersweet about this couple going out of this world together. My prayers and heart go out to the family for loosing two loved ones at once.
And that theyre already very old and probably lived a long life. Honestly wild but kind of cool way to go, considering their circumstances
I was just saying that to my partner at least they went together ❤ I know the family aren't going to see it like that. I had to watch my dad for 18 years live without my mum and it was heart ❤ breaking. God bless 🙌 🙏 ❤ the victims and their family my heart goes out to them.

Clearly this was meant to be, life for one would’ve been hell without the other, and so God decided to take them both at once.
I worked with Donna and her husband actually recently did drywall in my parents house. Amazing people that will be missed by many.

Oh no I was always told never to go under a tree during the lightning storm but I definitely understand the reasoning behind it. Hopefully the family can take some solace that they had each other in the end, but it's so tragic to think they had to lose both of them so suddenly

Yeah, I knew that. But they were outside and likely far away from any proper shelter like the place where they were staying. Im pretty sure it’s mainly just parks or housing around that area. They might’ve just been avoiding the rain and waiting out the storm. It’s not a normal occurrence to get struck by lightning regardless so they probably didn’t think anything of it. I know I wouldn’t in that situation.

I remember when I was a 4-year-old, kids TV shows would always teach me not to stand underneath a tree during a lightning storm. It’s so sad to see that so many people don’t know this and find out the hard way. Tbh, every single news network should warn or report about cases like these if they don’t already.
Just don’t go outside during a thunderstorm. I can’t say anything cause I just did that a week or two ago after a line of storms passed. Outside barefoot after rain to watch crazy constant lightning and a massive blob of a supercell. Not the smartest thing I’ve done but I’m dumb. Don’t be stupid like me. But the lightning was way far away I should be fine.
I knew this as a kid. I didn't remember it until today. I've seen people standing under a tree and thought of lightning never crossed my mind.

It’s horrific to see the body of someone who got strike by lightning. RIP. My childhood friend was killed by lightning 30 years ago and I still get nightmares seeing his lifeless body.

This is so sad, I almost died on that exact same day too... I was hiking out in the mountains and then it started thunderstorming and raining really badly... atleast 8 lighting strikes came within 50 meters of me. I was terrified

I worked at the White House for 4 years. You'd be surprised how often tourists would get caught up in weather at the fenceline. Its hard to find neaby parking, and you often have to walk a gazillion miles to get to the White House, so people get tempted to stay unless things get really bad, then theyre out there, and there isnt alot of shelter in the immediate area. My heart goes out to the family of the couple who died(and the others who were injured, or died since I posted this). Perhaps there will some comfort for the family in knowing that neither of them had to live their last years apart.

My family was visiting DC for the day, and we heard this strike, we thought "wow, that was close" but nothing more, we had no idea what had happened, later in the night my family got stranded in the Lincoln Memorial because it started raining so much. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, and their friends and family, it's scary to think how close this was to me and how me or one of my family members could have been a victim too.

I sat in a lane next to the road shoulder, lightning struck a 100 year old, oak,split it down the middle and it crashed on the hood of my car. The explosion was so deafening we all lost our hearing for an hour and had ringing in our ears for hours. A prayer for their family right now.
A few years back we had a thunderstorm at our house and a lightning bolt struck a tree in our backyard. We were all inside at the time, so we were just fine, but it scared the hell out of us, as it literally sounded like a bomb went off. We didn't get to see the extent of the damage to the tree until the next day since it was late at night when it happened, but the lightning strike had literally caused the bark covering the tree trunk to just explode off of it in strips that were lying all over the yard, and you could clearly see the scorch mark where the bolt struck and you could still smell the scent of burnt wood. That tree however is somehow still alive, though it seems to be about half-dead, as some branches no longer sprout leaves in the spring while others do.

I've seen a lightning strike across the street from our home when I was a child. I probably was about 9 years old maybe. I remember waking up in the morning because there was a heavy storm above us and so I went to my mom's room and right when I went to her room, her sliding glass door curtains were open and a massive flash happened and you can fill the vibration from the strike and it was extremely loud. Thank God we were in the house so it wasn't horrible but still loud

One thing I learned from my early teenage years: It’s NEVER a good idea to seek shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm.

This is so sad. I'm going through loss myself, and the feeling of not having someone who you've known forever suddenly be gone is unbearable. These folks looked so happy, too. I also didnt realize that standing under a tree during a storm is dangerous; I thought it was just tall metal objects. I wish their family and friends peace and healing.

When I was in middle school, one of my teachers who also coached girls soccer told us a story on how one day during practice, he saw all the girls' hair sticking up from static. He told the girls to get off the field back inside and lightning struck a tree right next to where all the kids had been running in the soccer field. That was his lesson to all his classes on lightning safety.

Growing up I was always told NEVER hide under a tree during lightning or thunder storms, as an adult, I am always shocked that this isn’t more common knowledge.
It's quite probable they did know.... but chose the only available shelter instead of standing out in the full force of the storm.

Easier said then done… I was caught in a lightning strike in Epping forest and I needed to cross the plain to get out of there fast and leaving the comfort of the tree to enter an open space when lightning is striking doesn’t seem wise lol

I suffered 3 massive electrical shocks at the DC VA hospital, I am still disabled from that. I am only glad to be alive, I am being refused proper treatment even though it was caused by the government. I spent almost 4 years with no recollection of what happened to me. The first shock threw me off the medical chair, then I was shocked another 2 times. I thank GOD for my life!!!

As a kid, I was taught never go to a tree during thunder and lightning.
The majority of people aren't too bright in case you haven't noticed.
As a kid, I was taught to keep my ass inside during a lightning storm. So far, it's been working out quite well for me.

Right, it's possible they headed for the tree if there was a heavy rain without thunder or lightning at that moment. Seems too hard to believe that 4 adults didn't know about trees and lightning. I have heard about tornadoes forming without storms, and have witnessed just about the loudest thunder crack on a bright sunny day with a few drizzly clouds. So unreal..

True. My husband and I got caught in a storm that came up quickly and caught us on a pier out on water. We had to cross it and then there were woods. I could see trees smoking. We were lucky and it was so scary thinking we d be struck any minute but we had to keep moving there was no place to go. We were at a park and made it back to the lodge. later we found out there had been a tornado close by.

I was in DC last night and to think that one of those lightning strikes I heard was probably the one that ended their lives is saddening. I even saw an ambulance during the storm that was most likely those two others who were injured. Very sad 💔

I was in a scary situation with a thunder storm once. I was running back from my friends house when it started raining and thundering out of nowhere. Had no idea there was gonna be a thunderstorm. The 2 mile run back was pretty scary as there was huge bolts of lighting scattering throughout the clouds, illuminating the sky white. Loud crashes of lighting hitting the ground and all. I was genuinely anxious of getting struck, so I picked up the pace. Always check the weather yall

This happened to me too, I was walking home and this storm started, there was a point that the lightning got so close that my whole vision just flashed pure white & then black… idk what that meant in lightning proximity terms, but it really freaked my 12 year old self out lmao.
I went to a river beach once and it turned cloudy and started thundering and lightning literally struck super close to us and feet away from some people and we left the place.

That's one thing I remember hearing about being out in a thunderstorm; Never, NEVER, under any circumstances, stand under a big tree when there's dangerous lightning.
It's not only big tree but anything tall in general like a flag pole, antenna, kites, tall beams, etc.. Lightning tend to strike the highest point.

@@SilentAndy If DC is anything like it is in Florida, then sometimes rain can pop up randomly out of nowhere. My weather app always tells me it’s going to be sunny all day and then as I go outside to do things, it can suddenly start raining. The weather isn’t always predictable.

I was taught to never chase a bus specially if it's going up a 90 degree angle.

They say sometimes lightning goes from the ground up, I’d like to think that this couple was taken to the heavens above in spectacular fashion.
I remember a Mom and her son at a beach in North Carolina were struck and killed by lightening when they took shelter under someone's nearby beach house deck.

Dang what's even worst is they were probably already wet from the beach, a little rain water won't hurt. People treat rain water like it's taboo, we need to embrace the rain it's so beautiful, cleansing of the air and it helps sustain nature/crops 😭😭
I remember a case in NC where someone walking down the beach was struck by lightning because wearing a metal hair clip! Yikes!
@@gonelucid Inside your car or home is the safest place to be during a lightning storm. If your car gets struck by lightning, the metallic body acts as a Faraday cage, moving charges such that it cancels out the electric field from the lightning, and thus no voltage inside. Same thing happens with a house, although lightning can burn through the wood of a wooden-framed home and potentially start a fire. Even wood has a breakdown voltage and so can conduct lightning very well.

1. ALWAYS avoid being at the highest point in the area.
2.Don't stand by a window lightening can go through windows
3. Don't be near water or use water (showers, plumbing facility, etc.)
4. Stay away from tall trees, posts, light posts, towers, fences
5. Stay way from small covered shelters
6. Don't stand on or touch metal

@@rusty4224 Similar thing happened to me. I had lightning hit a transformer near me and I felt some of the electricity in the air. All my hair stood up and I fell over. I was shook up for a few days.

Everyone takes cover under trees when it's raining. Literally everyone. The odds of this happening were slim to none and yet it happened.

I feel so sorry for the elderly couple that died. My Deepest Heartfelt Condolences and Sympathies Go To Their Families and Friends. In regard to the CBS News Crew, they should've known better. Especially since that had electronic equipment that was operating in their immediate area. It's Common Sense that your NOT supposed to be under a tree during an electrical storm operating electronic equipment.
the electronic equipment part is a myth, at least on that scale. Aside from being completely isolated from the outside of the equipment itself, the i only thing that would increase the chances is the fact it is a metal pole touching the soil, and that has nothing to do with if it has a small scale electronic equipment stuck on it.

The CBS News Crew was operating electronic (electrical in nature) and had been covering themselves UNDER A TREE on the White House Grounds. In either case, one shouldn't be operating electronic (or electronic) equipment during a severe thunderstorm or being UNDER A TREE! Common Sense! If you're operating Electronic and/or Electrical Equipment during severe thunderstorms, then you run the risk of not only being shocked (or worse) and/or the equipment being shorted out if there's a nearby (or direct) Electrical Strike (unless it's properly grounded by a Surge Protector). However, if you want to tempt Fate, then that's none of my concern. It's Your Life, NOT Mine! I'd suggest that you might want to do a bit of research on the "Do's and Don'ts" during a Severe Thunderstorm. It might just save your Life.

Tragic but beautiful in a way. If it was my girls time I'd wanna go with her, neither of them ever had to feel the pain of losing the other, prayers for their family and I'm in no way saying this isn't heartbreaking just trying to see the one small bit of positivity in this. Rest in peace 🙏

I remember a few years ago when we were in DC and got caught in a storm by the Lincoln memorial. So many people ran to get up the stairs but we couldn’t make it in time. My family was stuck under a overhang-type thing on a small office room that was about 10 inches. We were there for at least 2 hours before we decided to run out to get a cab

One of the scariest moment of my life was caught in a thunder and lightning storm while camping/sleeping in a tent in the forest, near Mount Lassen. The body goes into a kind of shock that cannot be controlled...
Being from Wisconsin we get alot of severe storms and tornados...sad loss of two Wisconsinites from our state. Thoughts to their families and friends.
This happened when i was in Haiti and about 10 people died on the same spot. i remember reading online comments by white people saying that it was God's will . whenever i hear about something similar i always think about it.
That is sadly the first thought that came to my mind. More as a dark joke though. Like I wondered what they said about God or Zeus to have been smitten so.
I'm curious what part of the state they were from. A round of spotted cow in there memory.
