What is point of scratching outside of gourd while it’s still green. Does that make it dry faster ?
From other examples of dried gourds that I've seen, scraping the outside of the gourd seems to produce a more uniform color when it has dried. I believe it's purely an aesthetic choice.

In the wine storage, the wine (rice beer, etc) is kept in large clay pots. This container is usually for travel as far as I know. It is the same use as 18th century leather canteen in the West.
9 months late, it's meant as a water canteen.
why? for traveling ofcourse. even in today's age i won't travel or hike with claypot or glass container since they can easily break.
Southern china has vast mountain covered region, ex :福建 廣東 江西
lighter is better for traveling
Leather container is used in northern china, leather would easily get rot in the south
