      Didn't Fuji fanbase already for years pushed for better AF? They kinda did address it.
      Just like how so many cried for articulating LCD. Interestingly they said it was not possible, but added it to X-T4. Then many complained to bring back the tilt lcd. Hence we now have both options. Someday AF will be perfect. Maybe.

      Yup. The crazy thing is that some influencers are finally stating that it is an Achilles heel. While Sony and others are just killing it. The justification before when fuji's cameras didn't focus was - "... well the competition is about the same!". Not anymore, the mirrorless wars are over and focus is not an issue anymore for those that are pulling away. On the other hand, Fuji still has wonderful color science and creates the best jpegs - perhaps that is why we still love Fuji, but for how long? And don't get me started with video. :/

    Hey Omar, I saw Jerred Z’s video about the XT5’s false positive focus. It’s when you are looking thru the EVF or LCD and that little box tracking the eye or face of the subject turns green and so you shoot a number of photos only to find out that a good number of those shots are out of focus or soft. Three says ago, I had a business portrait session and I used my new XT5 paired with the 16-80 f4 lens. For reference, I am an experienced Fujifilm user coming from the XT3 and I am well versed in portraits with strobes or speedlights. So I did have my focus priority on and AF+MF off and my settings were right enough to minimize any blur. I was hand-holding the cam at 1/500 f5.6 ISO 200 AF-C Face/Eye AF with IS in Continuous mode. I would acquire eye/face focus as indicated by the green box, but a surprising amount of my shots were out of focus or soft. The danger here is the false positive focus. I can understand if the box wouldn’t turn green at all meaning it just can’t get focus, but to turn green even if it hasn’t acquired focus is alarming especially if you are on the job for really important events, then coming back with a bunch of unusable photos. I hope Fujifilm can fix this soon. Btw, I had my Sony a7r3A as backup for the session and as soon I noticed the problem with the XT5, I switched to my Sony and it almost never missed the focus with 95% or higher hit rate with the same settings as my XT5.

      @@ogonzilla Yeah, definitely. Will be testing it with my XF 33mm f1.4 this weekend, see if I can get better results. Also, another XT5 user messaged me that he keeps getting eyelashes in focus instead of the iris which also happened to me and that muddy look also keeps popping out. At first glance in reviewing my photos using the lcd, it looks sharp, but once you punch in, it feels like you have watery eyes and you can’t understand if the photo is soft or you just need to blink several times to clear your vision.

    I've done similar test with my XT4 (shortly after owning it), I used the Viltrox 56 @ 1.4 and was getting pretty similar results to what you have here. I think the biggest improvement for the XT5 is the 'on screen feedback', that you are getting better notified that it sees a person/face/eye. I noted with the XT4 for example that it would actually at times have a shot in focus on the eye but at the time I was too quick and didn't give it quite enough time to display/show the box around the face/eye. You think to yourself that you prolly were too trigger happy for it, but actually on playback it says face was detected.

    My guess is that the mushy photos are slight focus misses, not IQ problems from 800 iso. I tested my XT3 in broad daylight on a static subject and decided that, if I have enough light, iso 6400 is tolerable and anything 3200 or less is basically great. The other reviews on XT5 suggest to me that it is noisier, but not crappy in terms of ISO performance. Available light and lens used has had a big impact on the overall sharpness and quality of my photos with XT3. I get plenty of “usable” photos in various conditions on any lens but to be blown away I need perfect focus plus good light, and with Fuji the focus hit rate basically sucks in my experience. I hardly ever burst and still expect near misses and misses to occur pretty damn frequently. It could be my own movement/subject movement, shutter speed, whatever, but Sony figured it out. I’m not defending Fuji, I love my Fuji. Also, Fuji sucks.

      @@anonymousl5150 I know exactly which videos you might be referring too. If your point is that these new cameras seem like a disappointment, and you wanted one, I guess all I can say is "try before you buy". I enjoy many CZcamsrs and their opinions, but at the end of the day its about YOU and what YOU are trying to accomplish with a camera. If you shoot in crappy light, AF suffers, image quality suffers, and so on. Garbage in, garbage out. You can spend plenty on a full frame and still be miserable. Anyway I hope Omar and others do a lot more testing and help us figure this crap out.

    • @alexmilesg3
      @alexmilesg3 Před rokem

      I tend to agree - the mushy effect is because things are not properly in focus. At 800 ISO noise is not an issue on these cameras, in fact you can push them way up and the results still are acceptable as long as everything is properly in focus. I (tried to) shoot a lot of indoor sport with my X-T4 and it has always been a disaster. In low light the AF just can't keep up, and the result are misfocused shots that look like crap. With my A7 III, it is a walk in the park. And that was my drive to just stop investing in Fuji until they figure things out. I mean, these days with 3rd party lenses on Sony you can get a wonderful kit at about the same price as Fuji.

Could it be the 40MP sensor and lens combos are mismatched? In addition, it seems to me that Canon and Sony are clearly the industry leaders in autofocus performance and overall responsiveness but you simply can't beat the Nikon Z6 II files for image quality. More and more videos are showing up on CZcams demonstrating that the accuracy of the X-T5s autofocus is not that good. The problem is that it for example shows that the eye of a person is in focus on screen, but when reviewing the actual pictures there's another area in focus (i.e. the hair).
    I tested my X-T5 with the aforementioned 35mm f/2 and I was pleasantly surprised with the autofocus. I just took it around for a walk and photographed ducks and seagulls in a pond. The birds were quite far away, but the autofocus picked them up right away. I didn't review the pictures on accuracy as the birds were really far away. The X-T5 had however difficulties with the autofocus of the 80mm macrolens, but autofocus on a macrolens is an exceptional case so I don't think it's representative of the capabilities of the X-T5s autofocus.
    Nonetheless I'm quite curious about the findings of other people and if this is due to the new 40 megapixel sensor used in the X-T5. If that's the case I would assume it would be picked up earlier as the X-H2 is already out for quite a while.

    I do bird photography with xt5. Been having issues with either lack of detail or images that have a terrible soft mush focus to them. I've gone through a long list of reasons why it's happening, even sent my lens back to fuji, they said it's fine. Camera shop I bout it from was out of ideas and resorted to telling me they're sick of hearing about my camera they sold me. Went to another camera shop and they guy figure it was an aggressive Noise setting. He setting the Noise reduction setting to negative 4. Said the Noise reduction gets aggressive at higher ISO. Suggested anything over 400 iso. I went out and was shooting Falcons and images seem better. Hope this helps some else cause I was ready to smash the xt5.

    Saw people commenting how Fuji is now on par to Sony A1 or Canon R5 with eye AF. As a Fuji owner since X-T1 I was super super excited! Went out to test the X-H2s at the camera store but left with mix feelings.
    Eye AF tracking was better than anything Fuji had prior, very usable now, but wanted more. Definitely not A1/R5 level. The viewfinder eye AF box felt choppy and tends to lag/trail the subject it tracks. Works well for static subjects but subpar if they are moving or you pan. Sony/Canon, their AF box in the EVF was way more sticky and smooth. Don't know if Fuji is just showing less AF frames to save battery or what, but the user experience was underwhelming. Felt like early gen eye AF or beta. Fuji gave us enough to make things work with enough tinkering with right setting/environment, but it isn't hands off brain dead reliable easy like canon/sony.
    Not many people compare AF tests like you do yet. Think "The Slanted Lens" did something similar with X-H2/A74/R6 of a model walking towards camera. Fuji would miss several shots, but Sony nails all of them. Be cool if you setup all the camera side-by-side on tripods and show how fluid the AF tracks in the viewfinder too. Gets exact comparison for the same subject motion.
    End of the day Fuji AF while not the best is good enough for most casual people to get by. Don't think they ever get market leading bragging rights on anything tech wise. Everything they do sorta orient/push toward value in a niche market they dominate. Just don't have the budget to take on bigger players.

I was surprised by the XT5 camera feel, analogue setup isn’t something I thought about until I had one in my hand. I love it and now just want Fuji to get it right. The price is not the driving appeal. The range of Fuji glass is great in most aspects, so the system specifications ticks all boxes except Auto face and eye / autofocus. I experienced false focus lock and that doesn’t inspire trust in human or the other object modes either. Fuji this should be priority No 1
