The Man Who Inspired Akira Toriyama (grudgingly!)

  • The dynamic relationship between Toriyama and his editor, Kazuhiko Torishima is something that transformed the shape of anime as we know it. Had it not been for Torishima's input, Toriyama would not have pushed himself to the limit of creativity. In Torishima's book about his experiences, he and Toriyama navigate the highs and lows of manga creation, from the iconic Dr. Slump to the legendary Dragon Ball series. The pressures of weekly serialization and Toriyama's innovative strategies to meet deadlines while maintaining his creative spark is something that we stand by as something more than just laziness. Toriyama: "The circle is now complete, Kazuhiko-sensei. When I left you, I was but a learner. But now I am the master."

Neat fact: Toriyama greatly respected Torishima's opinion even when he was no longer his editor.
There is the famous story of the Android Saga and its antagonists flip-flopping, but what most don't know is that the changes from Android 19 and 20 to 17 and 18, and then to Cell, were as a reaction to Torishima's feelings on the story, who by then was no longer Toriyama's editor on Dragon Ball.

Behind every great author is an editor who got their backs and proofread the stories they write.

My favorite running Gag from Dr. Mashirito is "REJECTED" which Toriyama reminds his editor one of his suggestions for Dr. Slump was Rejected. lol XD

It's always nice to have someone to bounce ideas with. That's why good editors are needed. It's a balance of trying to get the artist vision made, while keeping the taste of the audience in mind.

I got a what if I’ve been thinking about for a minute what if Goku married both filler girls Tanmen and Chuu Lee from OG Dragon-ball instead of Chi-Chi.
Would they act the same way as Chi-Chi in caring about their offspring studies instead of the world being saved?

I don't quite like the way that editors have so much power over manga. also only an hour a day. that's a nightmare.

Good editors are extremely important. They maintain a certain degree of quality in the stories.

It's just how comics work, in fact written media in general. There's a reason why "editor in chief" is kind of the "head guy" as it were for a comic brand or newspaper. Editors are basically guides for writers and those who temper talent. Both Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball ended up far better because Toriyama had an editor and Toriyama lucked out getting paired with the legendary Torishima.
That said, the sort of power balance is that if your comic/manga is that popular, you do get some sort of pull and can push back against editorial decisions, such as Toriyama threatening to end Dragon Ball if he couldn't grow up Goku.
At the end of the day, there are reasons why editors are there and why they have the authority they do. They're ultimately a comrade to the authors and there to make things as good as possible, not to be an enemy and worsen things.
