  • The color wheel palette is an amazing learning tool for learning about color mixing and color theory, but it might not contain colors that you would normally use in your painting practice. This video is going to show you how you can change up the colors and still be able to use all the useful function a color wheel palette has.

I should have know to check your channel. you really are the most thorough and informative person when it comes to understanding how colour and watercolour works on youtube, and i can always trust that if i have a query or a confusion about different pigments, you probably have a video that covers it. you videos are marvelous, thank you so much for all the work you do

    Hi Dr Oto, this exercise is very key for me! I have to settle down and arrange my favorites as you did in a color wheel; so far I have been floundering with random mixtures and have wasted a lot of time and paint. My favorite colors are yellow green and manganese blue; I realize I don’t have their complements in my palette at all! If i has done these exercises in the first place I would have seen the GAO immediately! It didn’t occur to me to alter the color wheel to include my favorite colors! Thank you!

    I loved this a lot, customizing a palette can be very intimidating or feel like a "no-no". You've clearly shown us here that a palette is just a tool for us to use, and that we can make it our own if we want! :D

    I'm in awe at the amount of work you put into your color palette, it's so fun to see the analytical nature in which you construct it. It inspires me to create a limited palette for myself! I haven't used a limited palette since college (were were very strictly allowed 3 colors), so in practice I understand mixing colors, I just appreciate being lazy I guess.

    Hi Oto. Your color wheel series got me to understand the color wheel and have less anxiety over it. My brain always rebeled over it because of the set in stone presentations of it. You show it is not set in stone and how to customize it. Brilliant!! It's the neutralization. You rock! 💜

    Actually, in Van Gogh watercolours, you can mix Ultramarine Deep with both Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber to produce greys. Burnt Sienna makes particularly beautiful soft greys while Burnt Umber makes deep greys. Note that Van Gogh’s Ultramarine Deep is closer to a violet-blue than it is to an ultramarine.

    I like quin rose with veridian and what I’ve used for years, I like the more slightly purple mis and the granulation which makes for beautiful shadows. Ultramarine with burnt sienna or Van dyke brown for the same reason stated before while the “neutral” mixes vary I love the granulation effects as a shadow color. Great vid Oto really enjoying this series and recommend it to my students, thanks as always for all your efforts.

      Of course Oto but please don’t thank me you are doing all the hard work here and it shows, and with the support of all your wonderful patreons who support your work your channel will grow as well as your viewership. I recommend your channel to not just my students but to everyone in our watercolor community down here in Guadalajara Mexico even though many of them do not understand English (my Spanish is sorely lacking by the way.) those that do express to me “thank you” just for making the suggestion. I just wanted you and your patreons to know how much your appreciated down here as there are no channel equivalent in Spanish.

    This whole series has been so helpful to me. There are some colors on the color wheel I never touch (like the yellow-orange like you) and I just so happened to get a tube of Transparent Red-Oxide so I'm excited to see how it mixes with my French Ultramarine. Thank you for sharing all of this information.

  • @waymire01
    @waymire01 Před 3 lety +1

    Wouldn't the most effective method be to start with a trio... or the split primary if vibrancy is the main goal vs cohesion... and mix the secondaries from it, instead of adding multiple other pigments into the mix? Based off the fact they do not cancel each other to neutral they were not correct.. they just appeared to be based off hue alone. Logic dictates that if you were only dealing with three pigments, all of their secondary and tertiary colors would be related to each other and therefore neutralize the same as the parent shades. Every color would be more pure. This color wheel palette is mixing twelve pigments and hoping for the best. I noticed multiple pairings did not mix to a true neutral.

    You are an amazing teacher !!!! I’m 62 years old been doing art for 44 years and finally you are making me really understand colour theory!
    I wonder whether a circular pallet is easier though ....have you seen the Robax pallets that Angela Fehr recommends? That would make it easier to add colours as and when , I still can’t quite get my head around the rectangular pallet but I’m trying !
    Thank you

    This series is so helpful and informative. Thank you! I also rarely use phthalo green and was grudgingly going to leave it anyway, for now. :) I'm going to go play around with my other greens that I love! I think most people use ultramarine/burnt sienna for grey... Peter Sheeler uses ultramarine /sepia... trans red oxide is a nice choice! There are lots of options!!

    Personally I found that a red brown neutralizes pthalo blue green shade well so I didn't include the scarlet lake and use pthalo green yellow shade instead of the blue shade. I think I'll wait for the next episode which might show if dioxazine violet neutralizes the yellow in the way I want because I prefer it to ultramarine violet. Thank you for such an informative video!

    • @Hellojaimegrant
      @Hellojaimegrant Před 5 lety +1

      I'd love to know which color neutralizes dioxazine violet too. Ultramarine violet is not a color I'm particularly drawn to either.

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  Před 5 lety +2

      Off the top of my head, I would try using cool yellow or a greenish yellow colors to neutralise a dioxazine violet. since it's more red than ultramarine violet, you need to go more towards the green to neutralise it. It'll be easier to explain in a video!
