    I know its just a cheap Mora but idk about grinding a divot in the spine. Just use the knife to cut a notch into a stick and you can do the same thing without comprimising the tip of your knife that you seem to be building a survival kit on...

    Really good. I'm an electrical contractor, so I have no shortage of electrical tape, but I watched and went to the store and bought an inner tube. Great idea. So practical. Also the way you did the cord with the plastic keeper. Very practical.

    Maybe put the bow drill grommet on the side thats visible when the knife is in the sheath. Cause if I'm using the knife to hold down the drill I want the knife in the sheath for safety while working the bow with my other hand.

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289  Před rokem +1

      That is a good idea. I flip the knife over and put it back in the sheath while trying to use the bow. Doesn't fit great but still covers the blade. To be honest I haven't had a lot of success with the bow method of fire starting. I live in a very rainy part of the world so it's pretty much a last resort.

    • @BretCahill
      @BretCahill Před rokem +1

      @@westcoastwoodsman2289 I can understand that. Bow drill will always be special to me because it was the first method I was successful at when I was learning fire making techniques.

    Finally found this again!!! Was absolutely positive I subscribed the first time I watched this and saved this specific video to do this later but alas the YT gods decided to make me work hard for it... Over 2 weeks to find this video again!! So happy I did (ended up watching way to many with people using electrical tape for everything ~ when electrical tape is in a vehicle wrapped around anything in an emergency bag for say 2-3 years when YOU decide it cannot wait any longer to checked because husband won't ~ and the tape has slid (melted) and left sticky residue that even the most OCD clean everything person cannot remove my search brought me to the best video ever ~ yours).

      Thank you for watching. I'm not a fan of electrical tape either. It makes a real mess if it gets too hot in the sun or wet in heavy rain.

    RUS: Если добавлено огниво, то вместо паракорда можно использовать джутовую или пеньковую веревку 2-3 мм в диаметре, её можно использовать в качестве растопки. Еще и стоит раз в 5 дешевле, рулона хватит на много лет.

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks! I'm almost certain it's a generic Coghlan 1005 fire steel. I'm in Canada, so I just get ferro rods from the dollar store or Canadian Tire. I think the fire steels are all made in the same place. They all have the same dimensions, just the names on the packaging are different.

  • @kennethmcdonald9736

    Is that 3/8 inch inner diameter for the clear PVC tube? And what width of firesteel do you use to fit well? Thanks so much!

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289  Před 2 lety +1

      Sry Max, I missed this question somehow. The tube is 3/8 inside diameter and th firesteel is just slightly smaller than that so I would guess 5/16th. Wish I would have caught this sooner. I hope your mods worked out anyway.

    Instead of the bicycle tubing can you not use heat shrink wrap"?

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you for watching! You definitely could use large shrink wrap. I like to use bicycle tube because you could use it to make bands or burn it if needed. Use whatever you have handy to fasten the fire steel to the sheath. Its most important thing is to have the fire steel attached and with the knife when you need it.

    which ferro rod are you using here

    • @westcoastwoodsman2289
      @westcoastwoodsman2289  Před 3 lety +2

      Just a regular Coghlans type ferro rod. The handle that Coghlans uses is a generic type that most of the "cheaper" ferro rods come with. They all nest nicely with the Mora sheath.

  • @adammcguinness9950
    @adammcguinness9950 Před rokem

    I added a ferro rod, duct tape, a heap of paracord, fishing hooks, water purification tablets, fishing line and more.
    It was far to chunky so I removed it all. I now have a bare sheath again.
