Symbioses Are Way More Complex Than You Think!

  • When we hear the term symbiosis, we tend to think about a simple partnership between two biological organisms. But in many cases, there are more than two parties involved and it's way more complicated.

I thought the slug story sounded familiar, I am fairly certain they were talking about are sacoglossans. I've read about the saccoglossan genus elysia, since they have a tendency to steal chloroplasts, which is really cool. Especially after reading that some of the algal genes needed for chloroplast maintenance, have made it into the slugs genome.

Having watched a bunch of Crime Pays but Botany doesn't, I'm currently intrigued by mycoheterotrophic Ericaceae. Basically, many members of the blueberry family have a mycorrhizal relationship where they work with fungi trading some carbohydrates and other chemicals in exchange for nutrients in acidic and poor soils. But then some have figured out how to hook into the mycorrhizal network of old growth forest floors which are so healthy and fertile that the Ericaceae can basically take what they need without giving back. In some species they become so parasitic that they don't even produce chlorophyll and just steal everything they need, basically just being reduced to a white stem and a flower/fruits.

@Shill for Science TBH I use the word mushroom wrong intentionally quite a lot lol. I know that bugs people but I don't wanna have to reteach everyone I know the english language. Easier that way. I seem to be the only fungal fan I know irl, and people tend to use mushroom for edible/toxic fungi, fungus for mold, or anything undesirable like mildews and foot diseases, so I speak to the vocabulary of the audience. I tend to say I'm obsessed with mushrooms to give a more "gourmet", fancy vibe to my interests so the uninitiated won't judge me, but I'm just as interested in chlorociboria, hypomyces, yeasts or slime moulds as I am porcini/chanterelles.

correct me if i´m wrong, but isn´t there a difference between true symbiosis and mutualism?
the examples you brought up are a pretty wide or general understanding what symbiosis can mean, depending on the level or mutual-dependency and whether or not one could do just fine without the other. true symbiosis is like we and our mitochondria or plants and chloroplasts: one can´t exist without the other, they are co-dependent to truely thrive.
so, the algae with the bacteria is a true symbiosis, whereas the slug eating the algae and using their chloroplasts and toxins to power and defend itself, is NOT a symbiosis, because there is nothing the algae/ bacteria get out of the "relationship" when you imply that it is symbiosis - when in fact the algae with their bacterial symbionts could actually do just dandy without the hungry slugs.
    am i missing something?
