ULTRA SF4 just came out and not much has changed for Oni as far as this video is concerned. Most everything in this video is still applicable.
Nerfs:
- Lost 50 HP (from 1,000 to 950)
- [THE DAMAGE/STUN IS BACK IN 1.04!] LK Slash does slightly less damage and stun
- MK Stomp lost invulnerable frame on frame 1 :(
Buffs:
- Focus Attack has a "slight" range increase (actually very noticeable)
- F+MK (Stepkick) is 2 frames faster (this makes his KaraThrow and Kara Fireball much better!)
- All Electric Fireballs recover 2 frames faster
- Oni is now able to focus attack dash cancel all of his Shoryukens on block
- EX Slash is 1 frame safer on block (still INCREDIBLY punishable)

Oni's walk speed is average, his backdash is poor, and his forward dash is pretty solid.

can someone explain what is frame trap?
+axel valerian a frame trap is when you do two successive attacks on block which give the opponent enough time to press a button (an attack), but not enough time for their attack to actually animate. for instance, if i am Oni and I use the sequence "Crouch Medium Punch, Crouch Medium Punch" on someone who is blocking, this is a frametrap. Why? Because Oni's cr.MP is +2 on block.
If the other player is say, Ryu, his fastest attack is 3 frames. This means he has enough time to start the attack, but he will get hit by the second cr.MP from Oni before the attack is actually able to do anything. By hitting a button in this situation, all the opponent is doing is, effectively, removing their ability to block (since you can't block while you are trying to attack).
A good way for Ryu to defeat the frametrap would be to reversal shoryuken, since that attack is invulnerable.

I's crazy that so much work is put into playing with a fighting game character well. I say that as I constantly get my ass handed to me not caring to put in this much work for a leisure activity. Excellent video, and glad I stumbled onto it. The creator Really seems to knows his stuff and expresses himself in a very professional way.

i have still yet to see the combo i created into a full ultra 2 with cinematic using only 2 bars of focus. :O this is still one of the best oni videos out there!
Good guide! Been playing Oni for near 6 months, and there were still a couple things from the video I didn't know.
Incidentally you forgot to mention that Ultra 2 has insanely long invuln, and will catch people who try to escape with shoryu/ex shoryu/low i-frame ultras =)

I think at some point I will definitely make a part 2 with more advanced stuff, not sure exactly when, though. Most of the combo stuff isn't all that complicated;. mostly it's cr.MP > TC2 or some slight variations depending on scaling or situations. I'd be more interested in resets and setups than anything else, as that's a big part of his game.
Good stuff, he's one my three musketeer character & I use him just how you explain in the video.

Yeah-- there's a lot more I could have added. Ultimately though, I wanted this to be a quick intro, since a lot of people are afraid to pick him up because they perceive him as "weird" or "difficult". So I wanted this to be an easy foot in the door without overwhelming people.
I will likely have all sorts of new stuff when Ultra sf4 drops!!!! gonna be sooo hype :)

i play oni and i wanted to know more about em... Thanks for the pointers... will definitely help me to improve... although i wanna experiment with the other characters.... are there any videos like this for other characters? If yes, do provide me the link, else its a request from my end to make one... would really help..
The biggest thing is to make sure that you hit "Back", "Down" and "Forward" each time. It will shortcut the motion passed the diagonals but if you don't hit those three x2, it may give you trouble.

Hey MetalMusicMan! I thought I would add, if you don't know already, that in the "air dash" section if you simply buffer ultra 1 from the heavy air dash it will come out and hit fully under nigh all situations. I love this option because the heavy air dash can be used as a anti air and its just a little more micro. I rarely see people do this but its so effective and gives an actual use to the silly thing ^^

You can Fadc into his ultra 1 both vertical and horizontal, and if hit with the air dash, you can use the air ultra

Really nice tutorial helped out alot was getting annoyed by the strict timing you had to do for other character combos oni is awesome
I thought about adding that information in, but it's so impractical. I wanted to keep things simple so this guide wouldn't be too overwhelming for people who wanted to pick him up. It's also why I didn't include any "advanced" combos that are overly difficult.
Liked and favourited. Job well done to you sir. I have always played Oni since I picked up SSFIVAE. The set ups that you had for the air demon were amazing, you can also connect it off a cross up hk tatsu (timing is VERY tight) and a hp shoryuken if P2 hits the top of the punch. I never knew about the double demon slash combo (no FADC), is it possible to end it with any other move other than slash? Im so glad you found a way to actually use KKK U1, I'll keep it in mind. Thanks for the video!

nice video. One thing i didn't see for ultra 1 usage is it will connect after a fierce air dash and its pretty easy to buffer or hit confirm it.

oh man!!! this is so helpful , I been playing with Oni for a while and I am ok!! but you made some good pointers that are going to help me Rank up with Oni, its amazing how Pull the Super in mid air after the dash!! u are too quick!! I try to avoid User the Super because is very easy to avoid in the ground and to hard to connect in the air, hope I never encounter you online.....

The stomps/ground pounds? HK is -1 on block, so it's safe just about always, especially if you hit with the "dust cloud" instead of Oni's limbs. LK and MK are -7 and -6 respectively, but if spaced properly they are difficult to punish.
