- 'I can't take off in the 109' - this has been a recurring question both on Facebook and the forums. The Bf-109 was not an easy aircraft to fly in real life, and this is true about the DCS version. So I put together a complete tutorial about how to fly it by the book, without 'gaming the game'. All this is based on the original flight manual, and personal accounts from 109 pilots. I hope it will help you get better at flying this iconic warbird.

As a Virtual 109 pilot of many years, I appreciate that you informed the new aviators that a low pass announcing your victories is MANDATORY.
This is by far the best takeoff/landing procedure video I've seen, and I've seen hours of them. Quick and informative explanations as to why certain procedures are necessary makes it much easier to remember, and much more engaging to watch. The whole thing felt like 5 minutes despite being over half hour long. Excellent job!

It’s so cool watching your takeoff and landing. I felt like I was right there with the ground crew cheering on a fellow pilot returning from battle! And all the information you shared in the tutorial was extremely helpful. I’m a former War Thunder pilot that switched to DCS not that long ago. I mainly fly the 109, and I absolutely love flying. I can take off and land, but there’s so many things I need to learn and improve. I think being a pilot is one of those things where you never stop learning.

What?! Gamers complaining that a highly complex aircraft in a "realistic" simulator is just as hard to fly as in real life? I am shocked I tell you. Shocked. :) Seriously though, that was a fantastic walkthrough. Your explanation about the torque putting unequal pressures on the wheels resulting in a yawing force was something new I had never heard about. A really really good explanation overall.

I flew a 1/4 scale radio control ME-109F and it was a handful on t/o and landing. Never crashed it but the under side of the wing tips took a beating. I accumulated well over 30 sorties and never felt one with the aircraft. Retirement came to the plane and I ended up selling it. Went on to a Focke Wulf-TA152H also in 1/4 scale and it was a joy to fly.
I've just today bought my first warbirds in DCS and have to say, taxi, TO and landing was actually a breeze in the 109! From what I heard, I thought it would be an absolute nightmare :D What I really struggle with is the severe right rolling tendency in flight... I've not achieved straight and level flight yet due to this and have to compensate with the stick. A little annoying :D but at least my first TO and landing was good I guess? Hopwfully I get that figured out soon...

I started to fly the A8 recently, objectively more easy to takeoff and fly, but harder if you use the habits incorporated from the 109-flying. Same quirks of "first not much happens, then suddenly everything happens at once" can occur, but you need a lot less rudder on takeoff and generally no braking. The A8 doesn´t float like the 109 or D9, so it can sink through if you´re a bit slow on final, even when you don´t cut the throttle, say keeping a throttle position of ATA 0.8. At least with 100% fuel. All german planes tip on the nose too easily in DCS when braking, compared to what I´ve heard/read about their real life counterparts, the A8 included. In combat the A8 feels more like flying a chess game than an extension of yourself. It has probably something to do with me just tinkling with it for a few weeks, but there´s a speed disadvantage compared to for ex. the P-51 and P-47. You can´t chase them. A different kind of shooting too, I tend to shoot worse when I come from the 109 to the D9 or A8, but then I start to realize the effectiveness of the FW guns. The outer 20 mm converge at 400 m and the inner at 600 m together with the MG131. The best A8-instruction videos I´ve seen are from Laobi. His checklists are pretty realistic, so pause and take notes, and he also have links to written down checklists on Google Drive under the video. Sometimes one or two things are added from what he´s saying. I flew the 190 D9 6-12 months ago and will revisit it soon. I would chime in on that it´s a bit harder to fly than the A8, but also more hands free with for ex. the cooling MW50 boost available. Would of course be great to see instruction from Reflected on these machines in the future.

Well done, congratulations, it took me a while to learn how to tame the 109 but now it has become my favorite aircraft. The cannon shoots very arched but the machine guns have no convergence problems and you can concentrate fire at any distance especially in close range shooting. If you like to shoot up close that's the best setup.

Thanks! I agree that the newer cockpits look way better compared to the 109, the Dora and the Mustang, Maybe even the Spitfire, but I still find those pretty good looking too. It's only in comparison that they seem a bit outdated. This being said, I'd be thrilled to see an update that brings them to the same level as the new ones, which are truly state of the art.

Thanks for a really good video, I learned a lot! It now makes sense why they waited with the magnetos until the last moment. I also noticed the fuel pump bug, but it was like six months ago, not sure if it´s been resolved or not.
When I get warmed up to the 109 I sometimes practice takeoffs on tarmac with ATA 1.2 or even less, trying to keep the wheel roll for the whole runway and pushing the stick forward beyond the neutral position (neutral is enough for an easy takeoff with slightly raised tail wheel, at least in DCS). Or make a complete stop at half the runway and then take off again from there.
I remember the 600 m runway on Dunkirk is a bit of a challenge and where a lot more braking than usual is needed. Final at 200 kph with a curved approach also helped, a bit on the edge. Maybe the easiest way to brake hard in the 109 is left, right, left, right etc but I´ve also tried to use both at the same time at say half position, and then add more right braking if it drifts left and vice versa. It´s a thing with not releasing any pressure completely, and I made a personal note on this even for releasing the right rudder on takeoff. Going to complete neutral when it starts to drift right can swing the nose left beyond recovery.
I think these "punishments" can be a bit overdone in the simulation, because it´s like "first not much happens, then suddenly everything happens at once". As said, when I warm up to the plane these quirks seem to disappear, but with any longer break from the sim they come back and bite me. Even takeoff with ATA 1.8 can feel normal to some extent, after a while. First times I tried the 109 in DCS, to some degree even with nose trim heavy, this climbing and left rolling tendency from torque at rotation felt extremely awkward, like if the plane was pulled up left by a rubber band, but now it´s just gone. I don´t even think about the right aileron at takeoff, probably only used it consciously with right crosswind, and gotten away with it otherwise.
The torque-thing is still there in dogfights however, because many time you have to cut the throttle to be able to roll right.

Marvelously detailed as is your simulation of the 109. I too could fill a bathtub full of books on the 109 and memoirs of 109 pilots but I had no knowledge of the Pumas or other Hungarian WWII pilots. Thank you for that. One nit, though it's something you know, is the effect not just of torque but of p-factor: the angle of attack of the prop. It's p-factor that makes any sudden raising of the trail a massive hazard. I've flown many high performance taildraggers but no freaking way I'd even *_think_* I could take off in a 109. Now at least I can pretend I can 😂 🤣

I find the tutorials in DCS "very basic" & not very helpful really! Especially for the 109 & 190. So hopefully tutorials such as yours, will benefit me a lot!! Also do you do the same in-depth tutorial, for both models of the FW?!

Awesome tutorial full of great information. Really well done. If you were looking for more tutorial ideas may I suggest a tutorial about your process making your beautiful skins. There are some other tutorials out there on skin making but you do some exceptional work and I think seeing your whole process from start to finish would be very interesting and informative. Just a thought. I am happy to watch anything you chose to upload.
Hey, thanks a lot! Unfortunately there isN't much I could teach about skinning. It's all just trial and error. Collect a lot of photos and resources, then paint, check, compare, repeat. Until you get it right. The most common mistakes are making the colors way too vivid, and forgetting that whites are never completely white, and blacks are never completely black. That's all I know about skinning, the rest is patience :)

It's a fun module but I personally find it's the one I have to concentrate most with regarding the engine management. That said it's one of my favourite WW2 modules Great vid, thanks.
Really? I find it one of the easiest. What do you need to manage? Everything is automatic. Just don't overstress the engine. What I struggle with is the stick forces at high speed.
@@ReflectedSimulations I find I'm constantly changing the radiator between automatic and open otherwise the engine starts to overheat. It's not an issue because I'm used to monitoring it but I do find it's alot more hands on compared to the 190 or spit. With regards to handling I love how it's a totally different game plan compared to say the spit. It took me a long time to learn the boom and zoom technique rather than try and go toe to toe. It's an ace module.
@@indianajon7980 Interesting...I never had to open the radiator manually unless on the ground. Do you keep your airspeed above 270 kph? Also, it's important to note that the radiator will open/ close in order to keep the temp at the maximum value (higher peg). So it may look like you're about to overheat, but the radiator is doing its job fine, and it will open further if needed.
@@ReflectedSimulations oh ok, maybe I'm keeping the engine a little cool then as I keep it in the middle and between the pegs. Will give it a spin without fiddling and see what happens. 😁 Maybe I'm overly cautious with it?

One question which is a bit offtopic cuz is related to flying the 109. I find very present and preponderant the tendency of the plane to roll right during high speed straights. I'm I know its due to the ratation of the rotor but sometimes feels really alot. Am I doing something wrong maybe? Should the rpm not to be kept at max in straights maybe? Thanks

Interestingly out of my tour of Europe in 2010 part of which was a ww2 tour thru France & Germany, Hungary stood out the most of all the history. takeoffs work so well, but the second im airbone the plane goes FULL power to the left, i can barely countersteer that, and then i fall out of the sky, and its very frustrating after following it all stepbystep

Great information and tutorial...One question! how did you get rid of the Flare gun so you can see the prop gauge?
Oh I hate that flare gun! If you go to the mission editor, click on the unit, then it's under one of the tabs, next to where you can select the loadout. Or, on the ground you can use the radio/ ground crew/ change equipment or something like that.

Brilliant tutorial, as usual! Why not using the "kill switch" instead of pushing each CB's at the end of the flight(I know kill switch keep some CB's on anyway)?

Hey Reflected, recently have you noticed a tendency to bounce in the 109? Last night I was flying her and when I touched down for what should have been a greaser I suddenly bounced about 10ft in the air.

One thing I'm not understanding, as someone new to DCS, is how are you activating the ground crew to spin the flywheel? This detail is not made clear in the video.

A campaign doesn’t change flight models or any core features, it’s ‘just’ a package of missions

I want to buy a German plane, but I really don't know which one. I have a design preference for the FW190 A-8, but the Bf109 is such a mythical plane... Really hard choice.
Depends on how much work you want to do. Personally I find the FW190a is the most fun and very stable whilst the d model is the easiest in way of engine management and just getting airborne. The 109 is fun to fly in a boom and zoom way but is a handful in a flat fight. It also has quite intense engine management and is slightly more temperamental on the landing. Although as a result it's feels more rewarding to learn and the cannon makes spectacular use of the new damage models 😁
Put another way. Doesn't matter which you buy. You can't lose and you will love whichever you go for.
Both are iconic, hard to choose :)

I wouldn't go so far as calling anyone flying on the side of Nazis heroes. I also dont believe anything from history should be censored. But rhat is a beautiful paint scheme.
You didn't have to be a nazi to risk your life to defend your loved one against overwhelming odds. Saying one side is all heroes and the other one all bad guys is a dangerous oversimplification of history.
