Tips for Hoses, Seals & Cores

- Bryan shares some of his top tips for using hoses, seals, and cores for the best possible charging, recovery, and evacuation procedures.
In many cases, beginners often forget to connect the side of the hose with the core depressor to the Schrader core, which doesn't allow them to get a good vacuum or have enough pressure for charging and recovery. Many techs also don't know that you can adjust the depth of the core depressor on the hose by rotating it with a gasket remover tool or pulling it with needle-nose pliers.
Some built-in core depressors or removers have straight ridges, and others have angled ones (like threads). Both variations will typically work with rubber seals, but you may have to use different methods to adjust them. In this case, Bryan uses the gasket remover tool on the one with angled threads and needle-nose pliers on the one with straight ridges. Although core depressors are often built into tools, you can also use a separate core depressor in a T shape. You can rotate the end opposite the core to depress the core.
Some gasket remover tools, like the one in the video, come with multiple seals and a sharp, angled pick that allow you to replace the rubber seals easily. You simply use the pick to grab the rubber seal and wiggle it out. Then, you align the new seal and press it in. After that, you force the core depressor into place with the needle-nose pliers or the gasket remover tool. A core depressor that sticks too far out can cause losses through the hoses because it depresses the core before the seal is engaged, so you will need to make sure that the depth is sufficient. The core depressor should be in as far as possible so long as it's still able to depress the core.
A Core Max core can't be removed with a typical remover because it's threaded in place. However, they have a great amount of internal volume and are great for pulling a vacuum. You just have to use a core depressor instead of a remover when working with Core Max cores.

Thank you Bryan!
Thank you for this. Even being in the field for 2 years i have not hear anyone go over this.
Great vid. Excellently explained
I’ve used a pocket screwdriver with the tip bent in a vise to change my seals for years. Works great and you can’t beat the price.
Today I tried to replace a seal in one of my hoses and for tahe first time I couldnt get the dam thing to seat. Its on the manifold end and i must have destroyed 8 gaskets before I gave up. The problem is trying to get the round end to start in the copper circular end that maintains the gasket. After looking at the others on line it occured to me, the hassle was because the outer knurled sleeve wont slide down low like it does on the other end, where you can easily get this thing started. I started tao think there may be a tool for it, but from what I’ve seen, the yellow jacket tool is merely a pick which I already have several of. Maybe I could freeze it to attempt to shrink its diameter momentarily and slide it in??? The pocket is down deep below the threaded section.
@@hvac01453 did you figure a way? Please let us know!
Well done & a big help. Thanks!
Great job and video like always
Thank you for the tips.
Thanks was just going to ask you to make a video like this...keep up the good work..
Very helpful! I was wondering why my charge hoses were leaking so badly when I was connecting to or disconnecting to the AC fittings on my pickup lately. I was loosing a lot of oil and refrigerant even with being quick to unscrew the hoses
Great video, thank you sir.
Very helpful. Thank you very much.
that is an actual quality informational video
Thanks Bryan!
Great video 😜
Great video, you should do one for the quick seal coupler.
Thank you so much nice video good information
Excellent.
Thank you for shared , great video ^_^
Very informative
Do you have a video on leak stop and how it affects the internal components of a system?
Thanks for the video =)
thanks a bumch from Venezuela
Good stuff
I just had one of these hoses blow up while doing recovery it just came undone can tell you scared the shit out of me and the gauges smacked my face
Do you have a video of deep freezer cooler , refrigerator, coolers for beverages and walk in cooler just want to look more into that since I'm working for a company that work specifically on those types of unit
Awesome information!
Great video! Do you have a video of replacing the seal in the quick release core depressor you show at around 3:00? That's where mine is leaking. I can see the seal is not seated inside, but I can't get it seated and not sure how to disassemble (or reassemble) without ruining it. Thanks!
Is there a video that tells what pressures are acceptable on different systems depending on weather and indoor temp and air flow etc etc etc.
Can you guys do a video on repairing the fieldpiece SVG3 mines is pulling down but not holding the vacuum I changed the rubber seal but it's still not holding the vacuum.
Can you tell me what the one that look like caps are? Also, how to use them?
My question is..can Nylog be used to lubricate the gaskets? Does it make any difference?
Youre doing the job our lead techs should be doing, you have no idea (presumably) to be told how to do something, after youve already done it many times. In this field it seems like everyones trying to know something over the next guy for whatever reason…
As a technician for Scotsman Industries, I suggest to all who work on the refrigeration side of the machine to cut the core max off. Replace with a standard fitting with removable valve as the core depressor is not a vacuum rated device
I went to two separate supply houses in NYC and neither one knew what the coremax valve cores were when I asked them where I could find replacements
Can the ball valves be rebuilt?
C&D Valve CD2070 Large Thumb Screw Core Depressor with Back Seat , I bought the tool but it doesn't work, the refrigerant started spraying out of the thumbscrew. Do you have any tips on the use?
What about installing the gasket on the manifold side?
Does anyone has a link to buy the core max core removal tool? The one he showed in this video... thanks
Yellow Jacket tool 19047
I replaced my seals today and it took FOREVER to pull a vacuum. Did I push the core depressor in too deep??
Thank you. raphael nyc
Can I put either style of core depressor in the fitting?
If it fits . You wouldnt want to go to screw the hose on and blow the thing inside the hose..lol. Think theyre all the same size..
Where can I find that coremax depressor tool
It’s made by bluvac / accutools and you can find it at trutechtools.com
Can you just flip the gasket over and use it until both sides are bad on it
👍
I need help with removing my O rings in My Sman 480s. Please do a video on how to remove those please. #GirlyHvacTech
THE REFCO HOSES ARE KIND OF DIFFERENT AND HARD TO CHANGE
Just curious who the hell is giving these videos a thumbs down?
People who forget this tip.
We all know that one guy who hates on everything. He probably has frost bitten fingers from leaking seals and the depressor being out to far! 😊
Either they are rotten to the core or depressed
Why not just use a manual core depresser everytime? Wouldnt risk any low loss fitting sticking and giving you the ole black finger..
Who is blowon or blowhard or whatever their name is, sad that a crappy commercial comes on at the beginning of these great videos?
Who are you, that you don't know that commercials are what pays for CZcams?
This video was depressing 😭.
Very depressing video.....
