Addressing the Hidden Epidemic of Child and Adolescent Trauma | Emma Barrett | TEDxFulbrightSydney

Evidence from around the world reveals alarmingly high rates of terrifying and life-threatening traumatic events experienced by children and adolescents. Rigorous scientific investigations have identified effective therapies for the co-occurring mental health and drug and alcohol use disorders that result from early trauma exposure. We now must work together to reduce stigma and build compassion for this vulnerable group so that we can help to break the cycle of trauma, mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse for millions worldwide. Emma is a NSW Health Research Fellow and Forensic Psychologist at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), University of NSW. She holds undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in Psychology and completed her PhD at NDARC in 2012. She leads a multidisciplinary program of research that addresses mental health and substance use disorders among individuals exposed to trauma. In recognition of the quality of her research, Emma has received a number of academic awards, including the 2015 UNSW Dean’s Rising Star Award and the 2017 Young Tall Poppy Science Award from the Australian Institute of Policy and Science. We continue to address the symptoms and not the cause. The cause is human beings not treating other human beings with respect and dignity. A child does not have a frame that allows them to deal with malevolence.All of the children in the United States attending public school are being traumatized every day. We have moved leadership from caring protector educator to authoritarian policing aggressor with laws that only support the aggressor. Compulsory Education law is being used as a tool to force children to stay in basically what is a communistic society on a daily basis without any freedom to leave or protest. If you still have a Principal at your school that protects children then count your blessings. Those are the only children truly recieving an education and thriving the vast majority are traumatized. The bully stuff is not what it appears it has always been about trauma and the fight, fright, freeze automatic protection system being set off for every child in a totalitarian ruled public school who does not allow due process. If they put you in detention or suspend you then that is what will happen without a court hearing or any due process. The position of principal is being taken over by less than honorable people. Lack of morals and ethics and might makes right mentality is pervasive. It is top down bullying in almost all schools.
