Maestro Echoplex EP-3 Solid State Tape Delay: Andy's Vintage Picks | Reverb Tone Report

- Maestro Echoplex EP-3 Solid State tape delay is a pedal that's regularly lived on his board since Andy Martin was just 15 years old. Andy's love of the Echoplex all started when he saw Jimmy Page running his theremin through the noisebox in Led Zeppelin's 1976 concert film The Song Remains the Same. Page was able to get all kinds of weird oscillations and space-age-sounding tones that enthralled Andy, and he knew he had to get ahold of one himself. Watch as he explores this popular pedal in today's installment of #AndysVintagePicks.

Love whenever Andy demos tape delay pedals he included Holiday in Cambodia almost every time 🤘🏻
That dead Kennedys riff was mailed perfect
Well that sounds amazing.
I came here because I'm obsessed with tape delay but was extra surprised to hear some Dead Kennedys haha. Awesome.
I love when Andy gets excited over something. It's that magic in his eyes!
this is pretty much history correct here, saw the DK's in Nov 1979 at the Whiskey A Go GO and East Bay Ray had this Echoplex sitting on top of his amp, hearing that echo bouncing off the walls was very cool to hear live.
I love Maestro Echoplex EP-3, wonderful tone!!🎶🎸😵
Love the vintage series. Love the ten years after - school girl riffs(7:06)
Andy sure looks happy in this video :-)
Is this gonna be the new Free Pedal Friday giveaway? Asking for me, because I want it.
Andy please do the orginal univibe next! Would love to see a comparison between it and other pedals like deja vibe, and nuvibe
Awesome! Great playing Andy!
I’m lovin’ that from 7.04. Cheers Andy.
Amazing demo!
Great demo. Superb playing as usual.
I have an Echoplex EP-3 as well and is the best investment I did in years! I use with modular synths and vocals for those dub effects. Thanks for the video!
I love mine
Perfect intro song for this demo!
You know its fun when Andy smiles!
thanks for sharing Andy
you know all the good riffs
Man, forgot how great those things sound. Thanks.
Nice chops Andy!
Thanks for this demo and all vintage gear demos. These are sometimes the only chance to hear these things to judge how good a reproduction or copy product is, especially digitally modeled reinterpretations of these old circuits.
incredible it really is quite versatile, thanks for the video greetings from mexico
Holymolly! Majestic!
I know what he means when he says he likes the one with "warts and all" more. I had an RE-201 that sounded amazing until I "fixed" it up with new tape, a head cleaning, demagnetization, etc. It sounded a lot cleaner but half the vintage mojo went away with the dirt! On another note, I recently purchased a T-Rex Replicator Jr. and have been loving the sound of an actual tape delay again after nearly a decade of not owning one. Thanks so much for making this video.
GoldenDeathMusic Thanks for sharing your similar experience. It really shows how clean, almost digital, a tape delay can sound when calibrated properly.
Had one of these into a Leslie. Good times.
Nice. Literally came here to figure out some dk sounds.and it stars with one of there best songs.
Fantabulous Demo! If y’all can’t afford an Echoplex...get a Belle Epoch Deluxe.. it’s the closest yet!
Andy rules
This is awesome
That Les Paul looks GLORIOUS
Damn this is great
So cool!
That’s was great! 👌🏻
Love it.
Sounds great
Still have one always loved it since I got mine in early 1976! I need a replacement motor though now !
It's a Holiday in Cambodia!
I did not expect Dead Kennedy’s, you rock dude!
I love the sound. I'm gonna build one using Some old hifi tape heads.
Makes you wanna ‘Run Like Hell’.
Love them . My first was 1973 and never had a failure with it and others , until "The Plex " 2001 , Band Practice was loud the slider moved timing and sold fast ! He plays with no picks
My Friend has one he's 65 and got a free original Tone Bender Fuzz with it for 50 bucks! back in the 70's. .. man i wish i could have been there!!! ...Also i dig the Ten Years After lick. Noice!!!
When they work they are great.
Just got mine back for the second time from the shop. 😮
How do you hook it up does it go in front of the amp? I can never get modern delay pedals to sound good in front of my amp and i want to buy a nice Friedman amp and it doesn't have an effects loop. It's their latest amp called Vintage Plex which is made to sound like an early Marshall Plexi. It sounds fantastic imo. I know people used delays before effects loops became popular and i'm trying to figure out who they did it so i can do the same.
My favorite thing about these is that they sound like little coffee makers when the motor is turned on
They also hiss.
Oh, great,I was worried mine was weird! :D
Totaly
The myth the legend... The ep3
I can`t even play guitar but I`d love to just sit around with that making spacey sounds .
One cannot talk about the EP-3 without talking about Tommy Bolin. He was the master of this effect.
Tom Tobin Absolutely! He is the first guitarist I think of when the Ecoplex is mentioned. He was also extremely talented at controlling it. One of the greatest guitarists. My personal favorite!
Tom Tobin are there video's of Tommy Bolin using the echoplex?
Put the link in the reply.
Thanks for this! That opening song is amazing, Dead Kennedys, I gather. Did they also use an EP-3? I have one of these, without the cool logo but otherwise seemingly the same, in mint condition. Loaned it to a friend decades ago who left it running by mistake for 3 months. -_- So got the tape replaced but that's all I think.
Love to see a comparison between this and the older Italian Meazzi 5-6 head ones & the Roland Space Echo. Because the ones I've seen where they play boring compressed guitar store type riffs are useless. Your taste & style are perfect for this purpose!
would love to hear some Andy Summers on this
EP-3 still the best!
"Awesome" Andy Martin !!!
Just rescued an EP-1 from my grandmothers house, time to get it up and running
Now we need to see a picture of 15-year-old Andy rockin' out.
Joe Walsh must have used one of these on Asshton Park, a song which unfortunately loses a lot for me now in "stereo", with major hearing loss in one ear. Thanks Andy .... sounds so cool.
I uesd one for years for reverb. Marshals sound great with reverb.
Reverb? It has only echo, not reverb, or so I thought?
@@christopherlees1134 With the right settings, you can use it as a reverb.
Andy - out of all the fantastic demos I've seen from you, this might be the most effective one. After all, the primary intent of showcasing a product is to induce the viewer to want to buy it. I've got multiple really high end delay pedals (and plugins). Delay is important enough to my playing style that I keep 3 distinct units on my primary board. Do I really need another one? If so, is an expensive iconic vintage unit that will surely present mechanical and technical problems at times really the best option?
Despite the high cost and very low need for my rig... I've got to have one. The unique frequency response you showcased illustrated this thing can do something very different, which was icing on the cake at that point. Fantastic job, thanks.
have you heard of the UAFX Starlight? The echoplex is one of the 3 delays that are captured within the pedal. Check it out. A much cheaper alternative
Hey Andy, have you had problems with your Belle Epoch Deluxe before? I love mine but maybe a little too much because after 3 years of use its starting to lag whenever the pedal is rocked too much. It doesn't sound like bad patching or power, it kinda sounds like the lag you get when you switch between the different types of delays built into the Belle Epoch D.
Andy is the best
Nice guitar
the video shows two echoplex. What a difference in sound. I have both of them but I don't understand the difference in the circuit. The one with the writen maestro echoplex which year of production !!!!
I wish I had never sold mine. I bought it around ‘95, back when Unwound was a popular indie band.
I have one EP 3 never used 1977 but needs new tape... Hard to find tape for it and I live in Brazil...
Dang what les Paul is that? Or what are the pickups?
that finger pickin at 6:49
🤘🤘
and the gods made love
How much does it boost the amp when the echo is off? I see EP-3 style boost pedals offering over 10dB of boost, but I am not sure the actual unit does that. I have a Belle Epoch Deluxe and it does not seem to drive the signal when off. Just a wee bit in a way that is more like a good buffer than a boost. I suspect that what the real thing is more like. Yes?
P.S. Yeah, I have been chasing Page tone for yonks too. MSG live tones are my fav. I recently found out Jimmy is actually my cousin in law (my cousin married his). I am not cheeky and rude enough to ask my cousin to pester him with tone questions, but I really want to, hehe (I have never met my cousin #. Page, let alone Jimmy)
East Bay Ray 🤘
Andy what in your opinion is the best alternative to this?
First song!
He doesn’t normally smile like that for normal stuff. And I don’t blame him.
Andy, make an album! It doesn’t even have to have songs. Just noodle around over a drum track. I would pay for that.
Love it started with DK lol
He played som e joe walsh stuff... actually Tommy Bolin used one of these... I love the sound of it
Looking like Quentin Tarantino in the thumbnail
DK alright!
Hmmm is the warranty still good
It would be If only he had filled out that originally warranty registration card and sent it in 🎃
ANDY ALL DAY.
Think about it, this video has Mr LesPaul all over it . Amazing man .
DK!
Parts of Cambodia were played wrong but this sounded awesome. Great video as always Andy 👏
I have five or six of those things.
sound like controlling the outer space, I want it.
Knew there would be some dead kennedys in this demo
How would this compare to the FullTone Tape Delay?
i found them very similar . I just bought the ep3 because of the history
I had a Fulltone TTE for a while. It seemed to be a very solid build and everything that was ran through it sounded very good indeed.
Never should have sold mine. I realize that now :/
How does Eric Johnson use this as a boost?
Hi, there is a pre amp built into the EP3. That is why Dunlap sells the echoplex pedal, and a separate EP 3 boost pedal. EJ also had one EP3 modded, look for a gig rundown here
Imagine that with a uni-vibe
Do a Roland RE-201 Space Echo! With guitar or keys
I thought I loved both delay and the Dead Kennedy’s…… this set it in stone as it did my divorce when she sees the $1800 I spent at Austin vintage guitar because of Andy
OMG
I’m not judging, I love your work Andy but I’ve always wondered why you don’t use a pick
Checkout his answer here. Andydemos new you tube channel.
First he said he's had one or 2 lying around then he says half a dozen??
He said hes owned half a dozen over the years...
If you leave two echoplexes laying around together they’ll start breeding
@@adrianjones1735 Man you had me in stitches!
Andy's playing makes me happy -Yummy!!! :-)
Dead Kennedy's!
Holiday in Cambodiahh!!♪

ive been listenning 2rock since the late 60-s....i am without a clue what this thing is???...LOL
Is this what Joe Walsh was using at the Tea Party, 1970?
I’ll buy the guitar player
