A lot of folio limited editions are like this. Minor upgrades in materials with a very fancy box. Maybe a bit of ephemera included. Then the price is jacked up 5-10x

Just look at the James Bond LE… and also the fact that most limited editions get standard editions after a month or two, really makes them less special.

@@PontusPresentsCould you imagine the outrage if they didn’t make standard editions though? They have to walk a fine line between true luxury and editions that can be produced at a scale that satiates buyer demand. Otherwise I’m afraid the prices would climb quite a bit higher.

Nice video Pontus, and kudos for not price-gouging anyone. It surely helps that the standard fine edition is probably one of the nicest editions in the current catalogue!

Another great video. I have the 1980’s memorial edition from Easton Press and it is my favorite edition I’ve ever had of this book. Relatively cheap, as long as you’re not trying for the rare black one.
The notes and letters included, all written in response to Herbert’s untimely from fellow authors and friends, are a lovely addition.

good to know about this edition. i love easton press but cannot buy since i live in a tropical country and disaster prone area. its so beautiful anyways.

I used to have that edition also... but, for some reason I was compelled to sell it many years later... why? Oh yeah, I sold it with a lot of my other Easton Press scifi books in order to buy my first high powered computer! 😆 I already had a copy of the 1st edition 4th printing of the Chilton publication so I'm not sad!!

I have zero regrets about not picking up the limited edition - for very similar reasons to the ones you mentioned. I prefer the cover design on the standard edition, and I didn't need a solander case ( at huge expense ).

  • @hurdygurdyguy1
    @hurdygurdyguy1 Před 3 měsíci +2

The only hardcover edition I need is the original Chilton publication (with the superior John Schoenherr dust jacket) from the '60's...
Which I found 30 years ago in a used bookstore for $10!!! A non Book Club 1st edition, 4th printing! ❤❤❤ It's all need...
That said I wouldn't mind having the limited edition Centipede Press publication of Dune Messiah as I've seen has included all of the illustrations Schoenherr did for the Analog magazine serialization, Chilton dust jacket, Ace paperback cover and the Illustrated Dune publication!! However.. the price tag on Ebay ($1,000's) puts it permanently out of my reach.. oh well...

Wonderful video. I elected to purchase the standard edition vs limited. I also preferred the cover art of the standard over the limited. Have you considered, perhaps you already own, the Centipede Press edition?

i am sorry for you if you lost some value on this. but very thankful that you made that video and now this video. because of your video i took the decision of buying simple edition with satisfaction. limited edition is very beautiful and those who have it should enjoy it. but if u r not that rich folio is still a luxury and by watching this video i feel like i have not missed out. appreciate it.

The only time I feel the limited editions are worth it are when there is no SE and no equivalent to an SE by other publishers such as Easton Press. So I’ll only get an LE is when folio releases a classic with a good translation that isn’t available elsewhere.
I have the original Beowulf SE, and there is zero chance I would consider even for a second upgrading.

Not a big fan of FS current batch of limited editions. I much prefer the ones they used to do like the Queen Mary Atlas and Luttrell Psalter (both of which I have). The current LE's are mainly additions to standard editions with the price jacked up five or ten times, and not much better with lots of piddly and gimmicky bits and pieces included. The one exception to this was Terry Pratchett's Mort. Only 500 were produced and the price was around £105 at the time - for members. Which at the time was only around three times the standard edition - or a little less. That was well worth the money.

While I like many of the cover designs for folio books I rarely buy any for the reasons you stipulated. My chief concern is longevity and folio books are about the same level of quality as any standard hardcover book and aren't worth the price.
If I really enjoy a book enough to spend a substantial amount of money on it then I'd rather get an Easton Press book that while they are plain looking, they are also designed to be heirloom and can be passed down to my children. I've bought Easton press books that are 20-30 years old yet still look like they were printed last year. While folio books look better but many have issues with fading etc. So in the long run they end up looking worse

I did not have the limited edition from Folio Society. I own the standard one from them. I do not find it a good buy. Yet as a Dune universe fan I cannot imagine myself selling such an edition as the one you are talking about. I do not make money out of selling or reselling books. Luckily I also have several much cheaper editions of Dune that look even better that the standard one from Folio.
